I understand Tay is our best trade chip, but (if true) this is very annoying.

I'd do that trade...

…Tayshaun and the 7th for Nocioni and the 5th.

You could get more for Tayshuan’s contract because he’s a good player and it’s an expiring contract. But, I think there’s a big drop off after Cousins and Favors.

Nocioni’s contract isn’t awful. It’s two years so it’s tradeable. I’m not sure what would happen if he decided to go play in Europe. Perhaps, he could be nudged in that direction.

If this is actually available and Joe doesn’t want to move Tay, I will put a hex on his colon.

Uh, me, new?

by Mike Payne on Jun 16, 2010 4:10 PM EDT reply actions

Give him time.

The other GMs actually still respect him, he’ll make the best trade out of this. But yeah, if it does come down to this or nothin, I better be seeing a one, two euro-punch at the 3 position next year.

by Roll The Dyess on Jun 16, 2010 4:45 PM EDT reply actions

If it does happen, we may not know until July.

We might see the Pistons draft Aminu or someone else for Sacramento. And then when the trade moratorium is lifted, the deal would happen.

by Quick Darshan on Jun 16, 2010 4:48 PM EDT reply actions

But so far the Pistons have been adamant that they’re holding on to Prince,

WHY in the EFF would this be our position? He is clearly, obviously, undeniably our best trade chip?

by brgulker on Jun 16, 2010 4:54 PM EDT reply actions

loyalty is my guess

It could be that Prince does not want to go there, and you saw Joe trade away Billups for a washed up version of AI just because of loyalty.

Otherwise it makes no sense. Sure we’re trading away our second best piece, but we’re also upgrading our best piece – that draft pick could be turned into a better player, especially after we got Cousins. And it’s not like Nocioni is a horrible player on a lengthy contract, we could be out of it as early as next July.

by bearded thundar on Jun 16, 2010 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions

i agree re: loyalty, but if I were Prince I wouldn’t see Sacramento as a bad place to go. He’s in his home state, playing for a team on the rise with a solid core and a contributing big with the #7. Prince is a better fit for the WC anyway, and you’d think he’d enjoy being the veteran voice on what could be a playoff team in a year or two. Besides, he’s expiring anyway, so if he’s not happy he can just play the free agent market in 2011.

Uh, me, new?

by Mike Payne on Jun 16, 2010 5:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

Playing alongside Tyreke and Monroe would be much better than either of his last two seasons in Detroit. Maybe he doesn’t like the sun (just look at his skin complexion)

by bearded thundar on Jun 16, 2010 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Nocioni + 5 for Tay + 7 doesn't work

Nocioni doesn’t get paid enough and the difference in salaries associated with the 5th and 7th picks aren’t enough to make up the difference.

So we’d have to take on something else, the most likely candidate being Beno Udrih and having us add in Max or a signed and traded Bynum.

And how is Detroit “adamant” about keeping Tay? JoD has said time and again that everyone is tradeable on this team. Sounds like either plain BS or JoD posturing to try to add inferred value around Tay.

Where Mayo was picked 3rd, Love 5th, and the trade announced at around the 8th or 9th pick…

So Kings would take Cousins, and assuming Golden State didn’t take Monroe, we’d take Monroe and then finalize the deal in the ensuing 15-20 minutes.

Maybe you guys can help me figure this out. I don’t see you guys making this trade unless Cousins or Favors is available and I don’t see the King’s making this trade unless they aren’t available. The Kings are really in need of a decent big and I don’t see why they would pass on a chance for either of these 2. I think it’s checkmate, some guys at StR disagree with me.
I think your best shot is to trade up to 4 where Minn won’t take Cousins if he’s there.

don't be surprised if he falls a bit

Stephen Curry was considered a top 4 lock and he fell to 7 because of questions of size. Favors could very slip because he just does not have much at all in the way of skill (size and athleticism are the only things he has going for him).

The funny part about it is that there was talk about Rubio not wanting to play for Minnesota (if they drafted) well before the draft. smh.

I wasn’t sure if Curry would turn out to be a good PG but I knew one thing his shooting game would definitely translate into the NBA. Minnesota definitely missed out on that…twice.

by DBB Diablo on Jun 16, 2010 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions

agreed

I don’t think that anyone believed Curry would make the transition so seemlessly. I don’t understand the infatuation with Westbrook; he’s horribly inefficient. However Stephen not only is a good shooter but also showed a nice floater and the ability to finish around the rim on top of finding spot up shooters.

Last year's class was much better.

This class is 6 deep and drops off mightily after Monroe.

by Roll The Dyess on Jun 16, 2010 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions

what!?

Last year’s class was considered to be one of the weakest in the past 5 years until after the draft. This one is considered to be one of the deepest drafts for big men in the past decade or two. Sure there are no point guards behind Wall, but they all went in last year’s draft.

Just wait until after the draft to judge it. As I said, people really lowballed last year’s, and I think you will find this one to be very good for what we need. Just look at the second round talent available, a few of them actually were projected for the lottery last year (due to lack of bigs) but had miserable seasons this year and really fell.

by bearded thundar on Jun 16, 2010 7:54 PM EDT up reply actions

This of course is my biggest fear about this draft

It is projected to be insanely deep for bigs…but doesn’t the NBA have a knack for over-valuing bigs? When it comes to contracts at least, that is for sure.

So what happens if this draft is “insanely deep” for bigs simply because there are a lot of over-valued bigs coming into the draft?

I’m sure that we’ll see 3 or 4 of the bigs coming out end up being forces but what about the other 10-15 that have come up in discussion between the 1st and 2nd round picks we have?

Not disagreeing with anything you say above by the way, just expressing my own concerns with this draft class being touted as deep for bigs.

by Mike Payne on Jun 16, 2010 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I figured that moving Nocioni's contract would be a big part of this trade

And since your GM seems to still be on the fence between Cousins and Monroe, if he could get Monroe at 7, plus a veteran SF that would be willing to play a secondary role to Tyreke, plus provide the veteran leadership that Sacramento will need if they have hopes of playoff appearances, it seems like this would be a pretty fair trade…assuming it worked.

But I think I mentioned above/below that Noc for Tay and swapping picks wouldn’t work and I can’t see Sacramento giving up a 2010 2nd rounder to make salaries meet so it’d either have to be a number of future 2nd rounders or adding players to the mix.

Jonas Jerebko once killed a charging female rhinoceros in heat protecting its young with nothing more than a hook shot.

by The Boourns on Jun 16, 2010 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions

You keep bringing this up, but...

My understanding is that future draft picks do not hold monetary value in trades. So, if the trade went through before the draft, the picks don’t get included in the salaries.

However, this trade could not work before July 1, since both teams are over the cap. But, after July 1, the Kings have tons of cap space so they can absorb the difference. The deal could not be official until after July 1. It would be Kings take Cousins, Pistons take whoever Kings want and then after July 1, the Pistons trade Tay and whoever for Nocioni and Cousins. It’s perfectly feasible.

by waulie on Jun 16, 2010 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions

And actually, even after the draft I’m sure second round picks don’t get counted in trade salaries since they do not have guaranteed contracts. They would only count after they are signed which usually happens way later. You just be trading the rights to sign the player.

I’m not sure at what point after the draft the first round pick’s salary would get counted in a trade.

by waulie on Jun 16, 2010 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions

technically

the draft picks can be deemed any reasonable value by the traders (or at least that is what I have read)

by bearded thundar on Jun 16, 2010 8:38 PM EDT up reply actions

But that value doesn’t get included as salary for making the salaries match.

by DBB Diablo on Jun 16, 2010 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions

According to Trade Machine:

People are talking about the trade not working unless the Kings throw in another player of equal value of Prince’s contract. But according to the trade machine all the Kings have to do is throw in another player making approximately only 800-900K a year.

Example: http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=2cajf3n

You can take out Donte Green and replace him with any of their other players that haven’t re-signed who are also worth about as much.

by DBB Diablo on Jun 16, 2010 8:59 PM EDT reply actions

And to add I think Tayshaun has more value than Nocioni anyway, throwing in a “filler” like Green would be nice.

by DBB Diablo on Jun 16, 2010 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Nocioni's contract is far worse than anything on the Pistons books

If Sacramento gets anything of value back for Nocioni they are going to do cartwheels.

$7.5M for 3 years / 11.2 PER

I would hesitate to swap Prince for Nocioni if I got the #2 pick back in the draft, that’s how bad Nocioni’s contract sucks. He’s going to be behind Daye, Jerebko, and Maxiell on the depth chart, nevermind when Rip plays SF. Sacramento would have to toss in Jason Thompson and maybe take back Wilcox for this trade to be in the ballpark of fair.

by joejoejoe on Jun 17, 2010 12:21 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah, they're definitely not taking Rip's contract

After dumping Kevin Martin’s last year. Can’t hurt to dream though…

by Shinons on Jun 17, 2010 7:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Can understand looking at last year's PER

But his career is 13.2 and when he was last playing with Gordon as high as 16, 15, and 13.

If we started Jerebko at the 3, Maxiell at the 4 and Cousins at the 5, we’d have Nocioni, Daye, CV, and Wallace to come off the bench. Which isn’t too bad if Chunky comes out Chiseled.

It’s a reasonable contract to swallow if it means getting a talent like Cousins on the team. And Rip’s contract is far worse EMO!!!
