Around SBN: Terry Collins, David Wright, And The Mets/Brewers Kerfuffle

The Minnesota Timberwolves have been burning up the phone lines the last few days looking for a trade.

They've discussed deals to move up to No. 2 for Evan Turner, a 4 for 7 swap with the Pistons, and have looked at moving their other draft picks (16 and 23) to either get up in the draft or to add another veteran.

However, the most consistent thing I'm hearing is that the team appears to be determined to move Al Jefferson. According to sources they've offered him to Detroit for Tayshaun Prince this week and have also contacted the Pacers about their interest in Jefferson for Troy Murphy's expiring contract.

I fucking hate you. Hate Hate Hate Hate Hate Hate. What the fuck happened to you man, this is absolute bullshit.

Uh, me, new?

by Mike Payne on Jun 23, 2010 5:01 PM EDT reply actions

I feel the same way, MFMP. My pre-draft sadness has started a day early.

by -PS- on Jun 23, 2010 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd be shocked if the Pistons turned that down.

And if they did it because of salary reasons, that would be unforgivable as the Pistons would have a big man rotation of Favors, Villanueva and Jefferson.

Most of these rumors are BS, so I’m going to assume that that’s what this is.

by Quick Darshan on Jun 23, 2010 5:02 PM EDT reply actions

I should point out...

The report DOESN’T say that the Pistons turned down the deal.

If Minnesota is trying to dump salary, then getting rid of Jefferson and MOVING UP in the draft is probably better then MOVING DOWN. The only thing that makes the Pistons deal more attractive is that Tayshaun’s expiring is worth 5mil less and they would still have cap space should they want it.

by Quick Darshan on Jun 23, 2010 5:12 PM EDT reply actions

True, there’s still time between now and the start of the draft. I guess I had to choose a single verb tense, so I went with the perfect. But if Minnesota is leaking the trade proposal, it probably indicates that JOD has said “no” (at least provisionally), because if he jumped on the offer, the two front offices would be working out the deal immediately in advance of talking to ESPN.

by -PS- on Jun 23, 2010 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe stuff like this could still happen as a draft-day deal? I’m sure there are lots of feelers out there and lots of maybes and ifs, depending on what other teams do.

by garrettelliott on Jun 23, 2010 5:20 PM EDT reply actions

I don't like it that much

not unless if we get one of their firsts in return.

Every year someone falls in the draft, and although it won’t be Cousins, we could always turn that into a trade for him ala OJ for Love. I’m not trading away our two best chips for some guy that is injury prone and plays no defense

by bearded thundar on Jun 23, 2010 5:32 PM EDT reply actions

According to Chad Ford's podcast, Monroe will be available at the 7th pick.

And he’ll be Detroit’s pick if they don’t move up. Right now, Pistons are supposedly desperate to move up for Cousins and that’s the only guy they want right now.

by Terrence J. Lynch on Jun 23, 2010 6:16 PM EDT reply actions

All of Dumars failures are exonerated from now till midnight on June 27th

It’s only a day away now, so i reserve all judgment of rumors that he did or didn’t turn down until after the draft. But for his sake, there better be something to drink to on draft night.

by Roll The Dyess on Jun 23, 2010 6:35 PM EDT reply actions

Crap

That doesn’t say anything about the specifics of what those deals would be.

It said they discussed a No.4 and No. 7 swap.

It also said separately that they offered Jefferson for Prince.

Clearly those deals don’t work without additional pieces. Without knowing what those additional pieces would be, we can’t really blame Jod for turning them down (if he even did).

Obviously, the Pistons could get Minny’s No. 4 and/or Jefferson. The question is what do they have to give up.

This is just Ford being Ford.

by waulie on Jun 23, 2010 7:18 PM EDT reply actions

Me too. There has to be SOME kind of combination of good players/expiring contracts/cash/whatever that other teams would want. I hope Jod pulls out all the stops.

Draft Express just tweeted a new development to this trade.
Apparently Minnesota is offering 16+23+Al Jefferson to Detroit for 7+Tayshaun Prince+Chris Wilcox. Not sure Detroit goes for that…

by Mike Payne on Jun 23, 2010 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not sure like it

There’s way too much uncertainty that low in the draft, and this would leaves us with very little chance of additional improvement since our best chips would be gone.

I could be convinced, though.

by waulie on Jun 23, 2010 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually, the more I think about it

there probably isn’t going to be a huge difference between No.7 and No. 16.

by waulie on Jun 23, 2010 8:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Not for the Pistons who need a big

But the Wolves need a wing if they take Favors at #4, and the #7 lets them draft before the Clippers, Utah, Memphis, and New Orleans who are all hot for the lottery wings like Henry, Babbit, George, Aminu, Hayward. Lots of value for the Wolves at #7, but I would think #16 and #23 would allow you to grab defensive bigs like Alabi, Whiteside, or Aldrich if available.

by Ebomb on Jun 23, 2010 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions

There’s way too much uncertainty that low in the draft

Honestly, everything after pick number 6 is uncertain, save for Aldrich (no offense to those who prefer Udoh, I’m only saying that Aldrich appears to be the safest commodity for production)

by Mike Payne on Jun 23, 2010 8:16 PM EDT up reply actions

that's a garbage trade

I would definitely turn that down….
unless they are offering #4, that’s not happening. Al Jefferson is not worth Prince

Cousins or Nothing.
I’d rather have Monroe, Aldrich, or Udoh than give up Prince. Prince is not bad, he’s actually good.

by dandresden on Jun 23, 2010 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Just imagine it this way

We trade Prince and Davis, then end up with:

Al Jefferson
Hassan Whiteside
General Grievis Vasquez
and Art Patchouli
all on draft night.

People have been talking about trading down for more picks anyway, and Prince for Jefferson straight up is better than anything we could have hoped for so far this season.

Uh, me, new?

by Mike Payne on Jun 23, 2010 8:14 PM EDT up reply actions

If Minny is so anxious to trade Jefferson

they must really believe New Jersey is taking Johnson and plan to draft a big (Favors?).

Wouldn’t it be funny if NJ really was setting a smokescreen and they take Favors?

by waulie on Jun 23, 2010 8:10 PM EDT reply actions

that Philly would trade the No. 2 for two top ten picks

by waulie on Jun 23, 2010 8:19 PM EDT reply actions

Oops

Got trigger happy on the post button. What I was going to say is Minny could still trying to get their hands on Turner.

by waulie on Jun 23, 2010 8:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd probably take that deal...

…but, then again, I really haven’t been following Al Jefferson’s injury situation.

But Al Jefferson, Larry Sanders and Hassan Whiteside would be my preference. Figure one of those two big men will pan out. Hell, draft a third one with the 36 pick and stash him in Europe.

But, with AJ and CV, having a shot blocker will be key.

by Quick Darshan on Jun 23, 2010 8:47 PM EDT reply actions

Biedrins has a much more reasonable contract, is younger, plays great defense, and rebounds exceptionally well. Kaman… scores inefficiently for a big man.

My Opinion as a Wolves fan

He tore an ACL in February 2009. Returned ahead of schedule last season to Play opening night October 2009, but his numbers some dips in offensive rebounds and blocks, likely due to injury. For nearly everybody, you aren’t fully recovered from an ACL injury for 12-15 months after the injury. So you usually see a return to pre-injury numbers in the 2nd year.

Reasons to be optimistic about Jefferson. He came back to play 70+ games this season, not missing games to injury, they were missed due to suspension (DWI) and Grandma’s death. Also, Jefferson’s game is based on skill, and not athelticism, so its more likely he does return to pre-injury form.

Salary considerations

I bet the only thing Joe D is thinking about in regards to this trade is the salary implications.
Next seasons is ok, but after that we will be way above the salary cap and headed towards the. looking at our current numbers and add on a deal for Stuckey, Jerebko, and for these two first rounders we’re going to get, and we’re already up in the $65+ million range. Once you fill out the rosters with some other players it makes it really hard to imagine how this will work without someone getting shipped away for nothing in return, and without us using any of our first rounders anytime soon.

Does this mean we should kill the trade???
Course not.
Once it goes through, package the 16, with some of the future draft picks that we won’t even be able to use, and move up to the the 10 spot by trading with Indiana.

by tads on Jun 23, 2010 9:55 PM EDT reply actions

has nothing to do with the salary cap

It has everything to do with our fucking gold-digging bastard of an owner

by bearded thundar on Jun 23, 2010 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions

tads has a point

If this went through, we would have to trade Rip or Gordon after next year at the latest. They would have to be traded without taking back much salary. Otherwise, we won’t be able to retain our own talent let alone add talent.

to be honest

I didn’t read beyond the first line. I’m still angry that KD is the reason why we aren’t pulling the trigger right now

by bearded thundar on Jun 23, 2010 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Has this ever actually been proven? I mean, I guess it can be inferred from the fact that she’s selling the team and stuff, but you’d think she would trust Joe because her husband obviously did and let him do his thing. There are lots of gold-digging insults being thrown her way but there could be a million and one reasons Jod is making the moves he’s making (one of which, I think you mentioned to me a while back, BT — a group of investors and folks at the top, not just exclusively KD).

by garrettelliott on Jun 24, 2010 8:35 AM EDT up reply actions

The investors never stopped Joe when Bill was around

And the investors also aren’t forcing her to sell all of Bill’s estates (palace might be one thing, but all the other property is completely under her control).

I do legitimately believe it is Karen, because the investors would be smart enough to realize that we would be getting Jefferson for 2 expirings with that latest trade and simply trading down the 7th. Joe was infamous with other GMs for hoodwinking them of great players for nothing in the past, just think of Sheed among many other great minor trades.

by bearded thundar on Jun 24, 2010 9:28 AM EDT up reply actions

by bearded thundar on Jun 24, 2010 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

That says nothing about Dumars’ ability to spend. That’s a huge reach.

by brgulker on Jun 25, 2010 9:27 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah it does

it shows that the company is cutting costs in anyway possible. Laying off employees for financial reasons looks very bad on companies, so the fact that Palace of all places are doing that shows just how desperate they are

by bearded thundar on Jun 25, 2010 9:30 AM EDT up reply actions

When they start laying off players, I’ll start believing you. Cutting costs to personnel that are in no way related to the Pistons means the Pistons are under a spending freeze? Honestly, that’s a big stretch.

I know you’ve got your theory about KD not letting us spend. Maybe you’re right, but I don’t see any tangible evidence of that. The only arguments you’ve got are arguments from silence (Jod didn’t do that trade; therefore, he’s not allowed to spend). I am just not convinced by that type of argument under these circumstances.

by brgulker on Jun 25, 2010 9:59 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

The thing that I don't understand about tying Joe's hands from acquiring contracts with 3 years left (Jefferson)

Is that if all her financial advisors are saying, "no one is goign to buy this team until after the CBA is negotiated, and the CBA isn’t negotiated until after this season, then Jefferson would ultimately be an expiring contract by the following season right? So unless she plans on not spending at all next summer to replace Tay…which honestly wouldn’t surprise me, making a trade for Jefferson could actually provide future expiring contract value when it comes time to sell.

Jonas Jerebko once killed a charging female rhinoceros in heat protecting its young with nothing more than a hook shot.

by The Boourns on Jun 24, 2010 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

makes sense to us

but we aren’t footing the bill.

But I don’t see the logic behind them saving money. If we keep Tay and spend the full MLE, then we’re still paying the same amount of Jefferson’s contract (actually more this year). And if we don’t use the MLE to get under the cap next season, we would just hand Tay’s contract to the next Gordon and then we’ll have spent the same money yet again (albeit a few mill less, but still very close).

technically speaking

just about any ionic compound containing a halogen is considered a salt of some kind.

Table salt is generally NaCl.

Kahn denies talking to Detroit

Of course, that could mean that Tony Ronzone spoke to them instead.

by Quick Darshan on Jun 23, 2010 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions

really hoping Ronzone can get Kahn nice and surly

perhaps Kahn will just throw us the number 4 in exchange for a vinyl recording of Salt Peanuts by Dizzie Gelspie

kahn is a maniac.

he has four first round picks this year. thats ridiculous.

all these rumors are driving me crazy

by bearded thundar on Jun 23, 2010 11:13 PM EDT up reply actions

2 reasons I don't believe the rumor hype

Public Enemy told me never to believe the hype.

They said Minnesota wants Chris fuckin’ Wilcox.

Chale homes.

so theres tons of new draft chatter

none of it good for us. chad ford says that there isnt really any options left for the pistons to move up in the draft and that we are likely to take monroe now. theres a bunch of other shit on true hoop but none of it really matters to us. looks like we can close the door on getting cousins.

by dandresden on Jun 23, 2010 11:55 PM EDT reply actions

i guess the bulls are trading deng to the clippers which will free up enough space for two max contracts. good for them.

by dandresden on Jun 23, 2010 11:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I'll admit, while Monroe is disappointing, it's not a complete failure.

I’ll take him over Udoh and Davis any day.

Aldrich and Monroe are a toss up for me, though I give Monroe the slight edge due to age and I think he has the better skill-set.

Yeah, the only thing that this night accomplished

is fully close the door on moving up

Where in the world is Trent Plaisted?

If we pulled the trigger on this

We’d have one of the biggest line-ups in the NBA:
Stuckey (6’5)
Hamilton (6’7)
Jerebko (6’10)
Jefferson (6’11)
Wallace (6’9) or other Mid-level center like Haywood (7’0)

Why thank you kind sir

I used to post occasionally at the original DBB under “Kay Wan”, I’ve been lurching since the merger and now decided to get back in the mix.
