Around SBN: Champions League Preview with Jimmy Conrad

Detroit Pistons: The Pistons picked up a new starting center, Georgetown's Greg Monroe, in the first round, and solid 20-year-old combo guard Terrico White in the second round. White might be an insurance policy for Will Bynum, who will be a restricted free agent this summer. Some question whether White can play point guard in the NBA. Lord knows that if he can't, Monroe -- the most skilled passer at center in years -- can. Final Grade: A-.

So still waiting on a trade before getting attached to Monroe

If there’s a trade in the works, would we only know on July 8th?

A trade would also explain that White guy in the 2nd (as someone said in another thread).

But if it’s not coming, Monroe could be ok. He could even be really good. Maybe. Best player available anyway, and it’s hard to know what deals were available to move up.

by Tom Y. on Jun 25, 2010 4:11 AM EDT reply actions

This is an A- only if 3 possible scenarios occur.

1. JoD trades Rip.
2. MFWB is not re-signed.
3. JoD gets Art onto the summer league roster and signs him.

Monroe is a good pick considering what was available. I’m sold. The more I think about it, the more I can accept that Tay is still a good player for us and he could help land another player later on. Would it have been a gamble to trade Tay and the 7 pick for Cousins? Yes, but on the flip side we get a nice consolation prize and the potential for more value for Tay at the trade deadline.

The second round is the place for projects and we got one. It’s only a decent pick if Joe can find a replacement for Big Ben through trade or free agency. My draft grade as it stands now?

 B-

Well, there was the bit that you missed where I distracted him with the cuddly monkey then I said "play time's over" and I hit him in the head with the peace lily.

I think after cooling down a bit

This is where I’m at. Laughton nails it.

Boob-minus. An upgrade from the Dick-minus I gave last night.

I don't know man

boob-minus sounds pretty enticing, I think we should go with moob-minus as in it could potentially look nice with the right cropping, but once you see the full story you barf

agreed

moob minus

Uh, me, new?

Does anybody know what Monroe’s workouts were like for other teams?

by Dirtgrain on Jun 25, 2010 7:39 AM EDT reply actions

I was listening to the radio (I don’t know if their interviews were different from TV) and after GS took Epke Udoh, they asked him, “What did you do to Greg Monroe in the workouts that convinced GS to pick you? I mean, you LEAP FROGGED him! You must have destroyed him!!”

by garrettelliott on Jun 25, 2010 9:17 AM EDT up reply actions

Let me re-phrase that

I can 100% believe that Jod would take another project/combo guard. I am 0% happy about it.

guys I don't think Keith expected the White pick either

He had a ready made article on Monroe, but he still has nothing on White. It’s only a link to his nba.com page

by bearded thundar on Jun 25, 2010 8:58 AM EDT reply actions

White was late 1st-early 2nd in a lot of mocks

I wonder if it was a surprise even to JOD that he slipped and they bailed on any prior plans to nab him…

could be

it makes you wonder, if Summers wasn’t a potential lottery pick before the season, would Joe have still taken him?

The talent and body is certainly there, but the mental aspect and motor is completely lacking. It just makes you wonder what he saw in DaJuan that he thought DeJuan couldn’t provide

by bearded thundar on Jun 25, 2010 9:21 AM EDT up reply actions

Monroe, Davis, or Aldrich. None of those guys will be all stars. Two of them play defense. One of them is a Centre. We picked the one who doesn’t play defense, and have thus created a stupid, unnecessary logjam at the 4 among 3 inefficient PFs, while leaving a gaping hole in the middle.

Monroe isn’t going to be a horrible player. He’ll be meh, I think. But after a night to sleep on it, I can’t agree with an A- grade even on the 1st round pick alone.

Guys, this is our frontcourt rotation: Max, CV, Monroe, JJ (who’s out of position at the 4!). Who in the hell can we defend? Who in the hell can we outrebound? Name one EC playoff team that doesn’t have at least one big man who will tear us apart.

If we can’t trade one of Max/CV and one of Stuckey/Rip/Bynum, I give this draft a D+, which will roughly coincide with our record next season.

And the White pick? Irrelevant. He’ll be out of the league in 3 years anyway. Who cares?

Ok

“Name one EC playoff team that doesn’t have at least one big man who will tear us apart.”

Boston, Cleveland?

We still have Brown, who can defend and board, even with his bad hands. And Ben Wallace might be back.

by Dirtgrain on Jun 25, 2010 9:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Brown’s a free agent.

by Birdman84 on Jun 25, 2010 9:26 AM EDT up reply actions

and probably not returning

Q didn’t seem to like him.

And I think the White pick means that WB will be part of a sign and trade for someone along the lines of Deandre Jordan (the clips already traded for Bledsoe, shows they want a real point guard and WB can provide that to a better degree).

by bearded thundar on Jun 25, 2010 9:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh yah. He’s pretty important as a back-up, I think. I would like him re-signed, unless somebody else can be brought in.

I think Monroe can board, though. His defense does concern me, as he doesn’t block many shots for his length/size, and he did not get many fouls called on him, relatively. It makes me wonder how much he challenges the guy he’s defending and how aware he is defensively. He also had poor lane agility numbers, although I don’t know how the crap that is measured and what it means exactly. It does make me wonder how Monroe will do on pick and rolls (and it may, in part, explain his low blocked-shot numbers (he’s too slow to get there?)).

by Dirtgrain on Jun 25, 2010 9:40 AM EDT up reply actions

So, you actually believe that one of those guys can defend KG?

by brgulker on Jun 25, 2010 9:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Cousins could? Favors? Actually, KG is on a downslide, if you haven’t noticed. Jerebko can cover KG, if the refs will not punish him for being a no-name player against a super star.

But, if KG can summon the greatness for another season, then who in the league could cover him?

I think you're overreacting

Having a night to sleep on it really calmed me down, I suggest you take a break from the Pistons for a few days just to clear your head (I tell you this as a friend).

Monroe will turn out to be a solid player for the Pistons, and I think that White has the most potential in this draft behind Cousins and Whiteside (I don’t think Wall’s ceiling is much higher than his current play).

Does either pick fit the bill of what we wanted? no. Was Monroe the best player available, very likely. As for White, I’m still stumped that Joe didn’t just trade down from the 36 for to lower 2nds and get both White and Varnado. Alas that move I can’t really say much, not even Keith has found a way to spin it yet.

But our center problem still is a major issue, I will give you that. We should have drafted someone like Jerome Jordan in the second, if nothing more than to just fill a hole for 2 years until we get a better player.

by bearded thundar on Jun 25, 2010 9:26 AM EDT up reply actions

I will be glad to calm down when we get a Centre. And I’m not sorry for jumping all over Monroe’s nuts just because Pistons.com thinks he’s going to be a good player.

Thanks for the words as a friend. I assure you, this isn’t an emotional reaction … completely. Our team is going to suck without a miracle trade. I guarantee it, bud. We’ll all be back here a year from now hoping that Jod can land a big man in the lottery if something drastic doesn’t happen.

Ya know what

I never thought of it like that. I was pretty happy about our first pick cause I really didn’t like Udoh at all but the points you made are nice. I rec you sir.
