How Monroe fits in
Every one wants to talk about the negatives with this guy, but never sit and think how his skills can help out DTOWN. Monroe is 6'11 250, just being skilled with that body frame gives you an advantage in this league. He does not need to have a lot of touches to score, thats kind of like Jonas. We now can throw the ball down low to run our offense, this is something that players like KG, Paul Gasol, and David Lee can do it is a real asset to have a player like this on your team. He can step out and hit the 14 foot jump shot, and he can take players off the dribble. He runs the floor like a small forward which is not only key on the fast break but getting back on defense also.
It would be nice for Sheed to be around to team him the NBA game, but if Big Ben is back next year he can help out in teaching him how to be a good help defender and positioning on rebounding. We have some world class trainers and that will help elevate his athleticism. I think we got a guy who is going to step up and be a leader on this team, someone who is going to let his game do the talking for him on the court. Kuester already said that he will expand his playbook to accommodate the skill that Monroe posses. He has some room to grow as does everyone in this draft but I think his skills and body type will allow him to grow into 1 of the most complete players in the league. If you don't know about this guy DTOWN get ready there is no other player with is skill set.
He was rated as the top passer in the draft. Some try to use his TO ratio to knock that fact but you got to remember this, he will not have that many TO opportunities in the league he had the ball more in college cause of his role in the Princeton offense. Monroe is going to be a headache to guard, he was 1 of the most complete players coming out of college. I think he will win the rookie of the year.

the last thing i want is sheed around my young talent. I don’t care about all that talk about how he’ll be a great coach, and how he’s always helping the younger guys. maxiell and amir didn’t get any better playing with him all those years.
while i love the enthusiasm about monroe, i doubt he wins ROY. his skill set isn’t the type that attracts that much attention. everyone looks at big men to score, rebound, and block shots. monroe appears likely to be great at rebounding, passing right off the bat, and his immense potential (the kid just turned 20) will round out his game a lot better.. I just wouldn’t expect the whole package in year 1
Agreed...
I fell through a manhole last night in front of the office complex of my former employer (true story!) last night and have been a bit woozy and ill-focused all day, so when I read about keysersoze19’s dream to have Sheed teach the new kid about professionalism and effort, I though he was being funny and I was giggling (and drooling) as I continued to scroll down. Yes, I understand that he’s a “student of the game”, but when he didn’t get his way, he continually took his ball and went home. The last thing a team that hopes to be “up ‘n’ comin’” needs is to have Sheed inspiring its young bigs.

all that "Gasol is the best passing big man in the game!!!1111!!"

Uh, me, new?
Really? Huh. I knew he had become a better shooter after just being a garbage collector offensively. I didn’t know he was a good passer, too.
Every one wants to talk about the negatives with this guy
Monroe is pretty widely supported here. He’s got some question marks and red flags, but if all you’re seeing is people “talking about the negatives”, it might be that your perspective that is skewed.
Uh, me, new?
it's only a select few
Mainly gulker that’s still hating on him, I think just about everyone either thought he was the best option at the time or has warmed up to him after some more research

agreed
Gulks isn’t hating Monroe, and if our roster were different he might be lauding the pick.

and if we just won a championship
there wouldn’t be so much bitching on this site. What? If we had a different roster gulker wouldn’t be complaining? I’ll believe that when i see it. Gulk should be opening his own vineyard with all his wine.
dude, you got it
your shtick is getting old. We got it, you don’t like the direction of the team. you haven’t stopped crying about it for the last 4 days. for all the shit you give boney, you’re doing your best imitation of him this last week. let it go.
Not much of an indicator of future performance, but...
I was watching one of his highlight reels and he responded with indignant, triumphant range after blocking the hell out of a driving lay up. For whatever reason, i took this as a very good omen. Haven’t ever seen him play, but have picked up a certain sense of concern that he’s tough, mean, nasty enough. At least on that one play, he brought it.
Call it a hunch, but I (who rarely actually watches basketball games) predict GM will be a force.

On a roster where the team played 3 guards and Monroe more than 30 minutes a game. And no one else.
Wait a minute, that sounds strikingly familiar…

1st of all
Amir and Maxil do not have the skills that Monroe has. Dumars said that coming into the draft he would of taken Monroe 3 pots up. I guess everyone respects the fact that this guy can put the ball on the floor and get to the rim. Winning games in college has nothing to do with a players talent, how many games did Stuckey win in college
Monroe is the man
If Monroe was on a Kentucky, Kansas or even Duke team his #er’s would be sick. The kid will have alot of upside coming to the NBA, he reminds me more of a Lamar Odom a big man w ball skillz but i guess you could add C Webb to the conversation as well.
I see Odom moreso than Webber
Webber was more of a force of nature than Monroe. Monroe’s gonna be more of a finesse guy, much like Odom. I think Odom might be the best comparison for Monroe, but then again, I haven’t watched a lot of Georgetown this season, but everything I read indicates he’s more of an Odom guy than a Webber dude, not accounting passing ability.

Monroe can
put the ball on the floor and get to the rim, he can run the break, and has nice passing skills. To be blunt Monroe can ignite the break right after he grabs a rebound and he can do it at a high rate
by keysersoze19 on Jun 29, 2010 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions
But you don't want your center "igniting" the fast break
At least not if it means him bringing up the ball himself…
1) The center is never the fastest nor quickest dribbler on the floor
2) Passing advances the ball significantly faster than dribbling
3) It puts other better suited players out of position as the ball is brought up, most importantly the center himself (distributing from the top of the key vs. finishing at the rim)
That said, where Monroe can contribute on the fast break is with his passing skills and his ability to see plays develop. The most important step in a successful fast break is the outlet pass. If Monroe can maintain a high defensive rebounding rate and impact our break through smart, snappy outlet passes then I think that will help significantly.
Jonas Jerebko once killed a charging female rhinoceros in heat protecting its young with nothing more than a hook shot.
Agreed
Sheed was giving Boston some nice outlet passes this post season and it was real effective. But the ability that Odom gave LA in igniting the break after a rebound was a real asset for the Lakers, as a matter of fact they might not beat the Suns with out that element

I'll have to take your word on it.

In JoD's world,
Anyone can play point guard…which is why we just drafted a guy who is a combo guard, models his game after Wade, but feels he’s better suited to play the point.
Didn’t Stuckey say something similar coming into the league with regards to modeling his game after Wade? Do they realize that Wade is not actually a point guard?
Jonas Jerebko once killed a charging female rhinoceros in heat protecting its young with nothing more than a hook shot.
I think absolute best case scenario is (don't shoot me yet...)
a less-defensively sound Tim Duncan.
Monroe does strike me as a pretty intelligent ball player and his ability to understand how a play progresses. That said, I don’t think that Monroe will come into the league next year and average 21/12 like Duncan did and has done pretty much every year but I do think he could get to the 17-20/10 range if he works at it.
Duncan has never struck me as an overly athletic guy but rather someone who uses the little things to gain an advantage over his defender (bank shots, good footwork, good positioning, floor spacing, etc.)
Duncan also has averaged for his career 3.2 assists to 2.7 turnovers which at least on the assist side is a good number for Monroe to shoot for.
That said, Duncan has ALWAYS had another big playing alongside him who is defensively stout (starting off with Robinson, Mohammed, etc.
So if the comparison holds true then our need for a defensive minded center is that much more important.
Jonas Jerebko once killed a charging female rhinoceros in heat protecting its young with nothing more than a hook shot.
And so if we need to go with a defensive minded center we have the following options for trade:
In order of defensive rating:
- Gortat (99) 25 years old (4 years left, contract a little bigger than Maxiell’s)
- Perkins (101) 25 years old (1 year left, contract similar in scope to Maxiell’s)
- Tyson Chandler (102) 27 years old (1 year left, getting paid comparable to Rip, expires next year)
- Zaza Pachulia (104) 25 years old (3 years left, contract similar in scope to Maxiell’s)
- JaVale McGee (105) 22 years old (on rookie contract)
- Johan Petro (105) 24 years old (expiring)
I didn’t look at any centers with defensive ratings higher than 105. What this tells me is that if Ben comes back, it may be best to start him alongside Monroe with CV, Jerebko, Max filling in off the bench.
Then we do one of the following during the season:
- Trade for one of the above players (don’t see this happening)
- Wait for Tay to expire and go after either Perkins or maybe Chandler if we can get Chandler on the cheap
- Go after Gaosl who will be at the least a restricted free agent, if not an unrestricted free agent
Jonas Jerebko once killed a charging female rhinoceros in heat protecting its young with nothing more than a hook shot.
Oh true
Yeah I’m not sure why Okafor didn’t show up on my filtered list actually…is he not 6’10"? I filtered by:
Height greater or equal to 6’10", Defensive rating 105 or lower
Jonas Jerebko once killed a charging female rhinoceros in heat protecting its young with nothing more than a hook shot.
www.basketball-reference.com
They have a tab on their front page for NBA (not available for NCAA sadly) called “Play Index”.
Once there you have numerous ways of filtering through all their data from head to head comparisons for up to 4 players to searching for specific players that fall within defined filters. So in this case I pulled for the 2009 season any player who was at least 6’10", is defined as active (as opposed to retired), and added an additional filter of defensive rating. Then you can choose how it is sorted when the list is returned.
If you take said list and copy and paste it as is directly into Excel, it should fill cell for cell which then allows you to apply your own filter, and sort however you want. This is how I looked at Maxiell’s performance to contract scenario when we all felt he was grossly underperforming compared to other PFs his size and paygrade.
http://www.basketball-reference.com/play-index/
Its a very powerful tool once you get used to using it.

Intriguing
We now can throw the ball down low to run our offense, this is something that players like KG, Paul Gasol…
Tell me more about this Paul Gasol character that Monroe compares so favorably with.
Does he appear to have wandered down from the SoCal mountainside after wrestling a Grizzly Bear? Is he about to be sporting yet more bling? Is he 7ft tall, yet have a younger but larger brother? If the answers are yes, the chances are you mean Pau Gasol.
You’re welcome.

MY bad on misspelling Pau name
the only reason why I compared him and Monroe was because, Pau can run the offense with his back to the basket and near the free throw line, I think Monroe can do this better than Pau
