Opinions regarding Rip's contract seem to vary from perfectly reasonable given his production to virtually untradeable. My feeling has been that he is somewhat overpaid relative to his production, but I wanted to dig a little deeper.
I compiled all the stats and salaries for every shooting guard in the league who played at least 20 minutes per game last season. I then removed anyone on a rookie scale contract. I also removed anyone who didn't play at least 20 games last season. This left me with 31 players. I averaged everything, and here are the results:
| MPG | PPG | FG% | 3P% | FT% | RPG | APG | TOPG | STPG | PFPG | SALARY | AGE | |
| Average | 29.3 | 13.4 | 0.43 | 0.35 | 0.79 | 3.4 | 3.0 | 1.7 | 1.0 | 2.1 | 8.1 | 30.2 |
| RIP | 33.7 | 18.1 | 0.41 | 0.30 | 0.85 | 2.7 | 3.3 | 1.3 | 0.7 | 2.5 | 11.4 | 32 |
Note that all stats and salaries are from last year, which was Rip's worst by far. How you judge his contract is really dependant on how you balance the affect of injuries last year with Rip's aging.
No, I didn't count T-Mac's as a shooting guard.
Rip's contract is reportedly a little over $12 mil per year for the next two years, with a third year guaranteed for only $4 mil.
Anyway, please vote! Edit: I can't get the poll feature to work. Comments are fine.
