Possible Trades

How 'bout this:
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMa...radeId=23na57g

Pistons get Caron Butler and Eric Dampier and posiibly a draft pick.

MAvericks get Rip, Tay and Summers.

Or...
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMa...radeId=23hczug

Pistons get Landry and Tompson

Sacramento get J-Max and Summers+ draft picks
Why trade good: (Quote from mrknowitall of ProSportsDaily.com)
If the Pistons are looking for a trade to bring in some frontcourt help, then the Sacramento Kings are the team to call. They have Samuel Dalembert, DeMarcus Cousins, Jason Thompson, Carl Landry, Jon Brockman, Sean Mays, and Hassan Whiteside as frontcourt players (C/PF). Not to mention the 6'11'' guys that they have playing SF that can easily play PF in Omri Casspi and Donte Green. They are at a logjam and in need of some depth at the guard position. I wouldn't mind seeing the Pistons trying to make a deal for Jason Thompson and/or Carl Landry...and even though it's doubtful, I would love to see the upside of Hassan Whiteside because of his shotblocking ability.

I'm rooting for Dan Gilbert

Rip for Varejao and Delonte(the $4 mil it’ll take to cut him).

by Roll The Dyess on Jul 12, 2010 12:10 AM EDT reply actions

I'd keep Delonte just for the mind fuck element against Lebron

everytime Lebron shoots one of his 37 free throws a game against us, Delonte could just whisper “I fucked your mom…” and he’d end up going 0-37 from the line.

Possible, but that doesn't mean I'd want that transition of talent...

Giving up Rip and Charlie Villanueva for Al Jefferson and Eddy Curry’s expiring fat ass while at the same time having to deal with Mike Payne’s painful posts on a daily basis of how we nearly had Sessions?

No thanks.

In both of those, we trade away our only two viable trade chips for two players we don’t need. Butler is overpaid for what he does and is no better than Rip when he is in a good mood (not often last season, it seemed). Dampier is just flat out overpaid. He really has not been good since his Golden State days. Landry is a more physical version of Maxiell. And Thompson is overrated, I think.

Personally, I am on the “trade with Minnesota’s idiot of a GM who thinks Darko is better than Jefferson” bandwagon.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Jul 12, 2010 7:26 AM EDT reply actions

I’m opposed to any trade (other than for Rip) that provides “future financial flexibility,” simply because I don’t want another Ben Gordon/Charlie Villanueva summer.

by brgulker on Jul 12, 2010 9:00 AM EDT reply actions

Not to mention that we wouldn’t be getting full value off expiring contracts anyway with the league pushing for a lower, hard salary cap in their CBA negotiations.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Jul 12, 2010 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions

If the CBA negotiations happen the way the league wants them to, there won’t be any cap room to sign Gasol regardless of what happens to Rip.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Jul 12, 2010 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions

not necessarily

If we send away Rip via salary dump to get a trade exception (should be done at least 1 month from now to leave room for deadline clearance etc), then we can take on Gasol’s salary through a trade exception. The likelyhood of Memphis just giving him away is very slim, but perhaps we could give them a few picks in return or just take into account that Wallace is the second worst GM in the league (Kahn has stolen that title from him)

by bearded thundar on Jul 12, 2010 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

shouldn't matter

unless if trade exception will be rendered useless with the new CBA, we should still be able to take up to about a $13 mil player in a pure salary dump

we get the best two players in that deal. how likely is that?

by the89oracle on Jul 12, 2010 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions

not true

The majority of the trade talk around here was centered around Tay and pick before the draft, which were our 2 best assets and now around centered around Sessions would is about to be dumped by Kahn (he’s said so himself).

That’s very different than calling up a team for 2 of their young core players, mind you one of which they just traded for

by bearded thundar on Jul 12, 2010 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I can't understand why Joe didn't go after Hawes.

I think Roy Hubbert and Mareese Speights would fit in Detroit as well, I’d give Tay up for either one.

by SmittyJ on Jul 12, 2010 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions

we didn't have anything to give in return

Hawes has been a bust so far, not worth either Tay or #7. And I doubt Sacremento would have wanted anyone else on our roster with a similar contract

Hawes

Would be my pick out of Hibbert and Speights he just above league avg. in scoring, reb., and blks. Detroit has enough scocers they need that big body in the middle, i would rather have Nate Robinson than Sessions although i feel that we can get the same out of Will.

by SmittyJ on Jul 12, 2010 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Nate Robinson?

Sessions is such much better that would be like calling Kwame the next Ben Wallace. Sure Kwame is a nice defensive center, but Big Ben is just the best at what he does. Samething goes for Nate vs Ramon. Nate is a nice energy guy off the bench, but Sessions is one of the best pure point guards in the league not to mention is a far better defender

by SmittyJ on Jul 12, 2010 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I do think Stuckey is a good player

However I also think that Sessions is better if he’s finally put in a good role. Playing him at SG was just the wrong thing to do when he was in Minnesota; he needs to be on the ball and relied upon to primarily facilitate and then score when needbe. Stuckey is kinda the opposite, and IMO would thrive as a 6th man

Ask and ye shall receive

“Spencer Hawes is a hardcore conservative from, of all places, the liberal stronghold of Seattle. He was drafted into a city (Sacramento) where one of the country’s most recognizable Republican governors (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is in office. Hawes says he “loves” Arnold, and that he brought True Lies with him on the trip to New York, with plans to watch it on the flight home. “Now it has a little extra meaning for me,” Hawes said.

Before we expect some kind of right-wing, basketball-and-politics partnership to form, though, Hawes might need to change his stance on global warming. Schwarzenegger, who most recently discussed the issue with world leaders during a tour of Europe, has become a leading figure in the fight for action against climate change. Hawes has a different view.

When I spoke with Hawes at the league’s predraft camp on May 31, he talked about a recent Public Debate class exercise at the University of Washington. In it, he said, he denied the entire existence — and human cause — of global warming. When asked for his take on Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth, Hawes said, “It’s one big lie. I talked about that in my opening speech — it’s the media’s liberal overexaggeration of just about everything.”

Hawes, also an avid listener of The Rush Limbaugh Show, will be happy to know that Rush also turned pro — as a talk radio host — in Sacramento. For fear of overexaggerating any additional draft tales, we’ll leave you with that."

Not necessarily

A white millionaire is statistically very likely to be a Republican.

For some reason, I recall the Redskins’ DB Fred Smoot talking politics a few years ago. He, along with a majority of black NFLers grew up in a Democratic household. Smoot said that he, himself, would continue to vote for the Dems, despite his acknowledgment that it was now in his economic interest to have the Republicans in charged. But he noted that quite a few inner-city, lower-socio-economic background players were now voting Republican.

At least I think it was Fred Smoot and I think this was the gist of what he said…

A white millionaire is statistically very likely to be a Republican.

That’s a common misperception. It had been true for several decades, but since 2006, a slight majority of (white) voters in the highest income bracket have been affiliated with the Democratic party.

http://pewresearch.org/pubs/451/money-walks

At the state level, the party affiliation of >$150K/yr voters is closely correlated with their state’s median income. Rich voters in wealthy (read: blue) states vote Democratic; rich voters in poorer (read: red) states vote Republican.

Wonderful link, PS

So interesting the change in the past decade or two. I hadn’t been aware of that shift.

Pew notes that it’s been more about Republican losses than Democratic gains. Perhaps it’s not so much a reflection of a shift in ideology among the uber-wealthy, as much as a growing recognition that the means of accruing wealth don’t necessarily follow the same path. Thus, a huge chunk of the rich are now “independents”, as willing to vote for a business-friendly Clinton (with his more popular rhetoric) as business-friendly Bush (with his more traditional supply-side rhetoric). Just a guess…

If Kahn is serious about “trying” to put a contender together I wonder if they would take Hamilton for Sessions and one of the two first rounders they just got from Utah(we would probably also send them a second rounder).

Then we turn around and trade Tay + wilcox + 2 first rounders(1 from us, 1 from Minny from Utah) to Denver for Nene and Afflalo.

Stuckey/Sessions(MP, i’d need to see him play b4 promoting him here)
Gordon/Afflalo/White
Jerebko/Summers/Daye
Chizzled Charlie/Mad Max
Nene/Monroe/Big Ben

by Roll The Dyess on Jul 13, 2010 8:29 PM EDT reply actions

first trade could work now that they dumped Jefferson

the reason why they didn’t want Rip wasn’t because of talent; it was financial.

But I doubt the second trade goes through. For one, Afflalo asked to come there and I think his agent would be seriously pissed at management for sending him back (could impact future free agents). Secondly, and far more important, Nene is a very good passing/rebounding center that can also occasionally create his own shot (and for others); the likelihood they trade a cornerstone (that by all means will be hard to replace unless if one of those picks is a lottery pick) for a SF when they have Melo is slim to none (or salary dump, whatever you chose to cal it).

by bearded thundar on Jul 13, 2010 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions

My thinking is I can’t figure out how Denver can get better without basically reloading. Cap space and 2 more 1st rounders might be their best way to convince Melo that the team will improve.

Lawson, Afflalo, Melo and Nene is a fine core to build around. And probably better than anything those picks could offer

They just signed Al Harrington to the full MLE.

Also, they need big men to go up against the Lakers so they can’t get rid of Nene without getting a legit starting center in return. Not to mention that with Birdman and K-Mart recovering from injuries, Nene is basically their only healthy big man.

As for the first deal, I wouldn’t put anything past Kahn but I don’t think he’s dumb enough to think that his team is actually going to compete this year. Rip is on the decline and making big money so he doesn’t really fit. Ben Gordon, on the other hand, might be a legit option for the Wolves (although all reports have Kahn trying to dump Sessions for no salary in return.)

This is what I would love to see happen this summer:

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=2fy3hyr
(I put it all together in a 4-team trade to make it easier, but they would more than likely all happen separately).

Pistons get: Elton Brand, 2nd round pick
Sixers get: Richard Hamilton, Dajuan Summers

Philly saves a little bit of money over the same number of years, but they get to unload Brand to clear room for Speights and Jason Smith with Thad Young sliding back to the 4. Rip would back up Iggy and Turner (unless they move Iggy, which is very possible since they’ve been rumored to be shopping him for a while), and would go back home to possibly close out his career. / We get a legit low-post scorer and rebounder who could very likely have a comeback year.

I don’t think I need to discuss the other two trades.

Depth:
Sessions/Bynum/White
Stuckey/Gordon/Daye/White
Jerebko/Pietrus/Daye
Brand/Villanueva/Monroe
Gortat/Wallace/Monroe

by Boom Roasted on Jul 16, 2010 12:13 AM EDT reply actions

I know Brand might be a gamble, he only averaged 13 and 6 last year. But I’d rather take the risk and put up with 13 and 6 from him than have to deal with Gordon and Hamilton in the same backcourt again for another season.

by Boom Roasted on Jul 16, 2010 12:17 AM EDT up reply actions

that starting lineup

has zero 3-point shooting, a required talent amongst contenders. Stuckey is in no way a starting 2-guard, especially not next to Ramon Sessions. Furthermore, Monroe and Villanueva may not provide the scoring and defensive punch that Elton Brand has established, but that does not remain true with the Elton Brand of today. Also, Brand’s contract is a thing of myth, a myth that should not be written upon the annals of Piston history.

I’m 1000% fine with trading Wilcox or whatever the hell it takes to get Sessions in a Pistons uniform, and as I said early on, Rip/Tay for Carter/Gortat. But we are rock solid at the 2/3/4, so any moves for players in those spots makes little sense.

I’ll take this lineup over that lineup in a heartbeat:
Sessions|Stuckey|Bynum
Gordon|Stuckey|White
Jerebko|Daye|Summers
Monroe|Villanueva
Gortat|Wallace|Monroe

Not only does that lineup have balanced 3-point shooting and defense, it’s also a shit ton cheaper than any lineup with Brand, a player whose contract would be a depth charge to this Pistons roster.

He got better as the season went on, but didn’t exhibit that he can be a reliable perimeter shooter. In months where he took more than 1 attempt per game, he shot poorly.

As I said above, I don’t think he’s good enough from outside to be relied on as a perimeter shooter yet, hence me hoping he works that out during the summer.

Here's his breakdown by quarter season

Games 1-20: 31.3% (10 for 32)
Games 21-40: 17.6% (6 for 34)
Games 41-60: 43.5% (10 for 23)
Games 61-80: 38.5% (10 for 26)

So that said, I want to see Jerebko shooting roughly 110 3s next year and am hoping for 42 makes. That would translate to around 1.3 to 1.5 attempts per game.

by The Boourns on Jul 16, 2010 6:21 PM EDT up reply actions

You’re absolutely right about 3p-shooting, I was thinking more about defensive match-ups which is why I would start Stuckey.

I guess I’m not as sold on Monroe’s offensive ability as some others are around here. His post game seems limited, he can’t rely on his athleticism or strength to finish around the rim, and his jumpshot isn’t at all consistent. He’s a great facilitator, but him along with Gortat wouldn’t really bring much to the table scoring-wise. And CV really turned me off with last season’s performance, his inconsistency was painful to watch and I’m not banking on him turning it around. I don’t feel like we’re solid at the 4 at all right now.

by Boom Roasted on Jul 16, 2010 12:35 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't expect much from Monroe offensively

but I don’t think 14 or 15 is out of range within his first two seasons, given that he earns the minutes. The difference being that Gortat is absolutely not an empty body on offense. Given starters minutes, 12 is a fair estimate for his ppg production. To put that in context, Wallace and Wallace combined for 25 ppg in 2004-05, one of our best offensive seasons in recent history. 26-28 is a fair estimate of their combined point production, with Gortat begin a serious defender at the five.

CV can add 10 or so on his own as first big off the bench, so long as he is matched up with either Gortat or Wallace.

Honestly, I think a four man big rotation of monroe/cv, gortat/wallace is solid on both ends of the floor, and if need be it can be tweaked to score in buckets with cv at the 4 and monroe at the 5, given that our competitor can’t match the scoring threat (because we’d be school kids on D).

by Mike Payne on Jul 16, 2010 1:24 AM EDT up reply actions

It seems to me from watching Monroe’s highlights and Gortat in Orlando that most of those points are putbacks/fastbreak/garbage buckets. Neither of them are legitimate post options who you can feed to and expect something to happen, like Sheed was back in 03-05 (and 03-05 alone). Sheed had a set of post-moves and a reliable jumper (at the time) that he could go to every time he had the ball. I don’t see either Monroe or Gortat having any semblance of an offensive repertoire, or even a go-to move. My hope this summer was we would acquire a post-player via trade (Jefferson) or draft (Cousins) who we could dump it to down low and expect results, something we haven’t had since our back-to-back trips to the Finals. Without a reliable low-post scorer we once again become entirely a jumpshooting team. Monroe’s passing ability will definitely help our slashers get easy buckets, which is where I find his value offensively. But I would really love if he had a legitimate post game, and I haven’t seen that in summer league or his Georgetown highlights. I see where you’re coming from man, but I just don’t feel comfortable with having Monroe and CV as our main frontcourt scoring options. I really really hope they both prove me wrong this season.
