Cheer on Your Las Vegas Pistons!

The summer league boys take the court at 10:30 ET.  What, you thought I was talking about something else?

The Pistons are looking to rebound from a thrashing at the hands of a Kings squad that simply seemed to be in another league.  Here are some things to watch for.

Greg Monroe's motor: When Detroit drafted him, my primary concern was his conditioning, and it appears those were well founded.  Alright, fine.  But we need to see some evidence that he is willing to get into the mix and throw down.  Right now, he is just treading water, and that's disconcerting.

Austin Daye's role: I'm inclined to chalk up Daye's miserable game three performance to being nicked up and giving the other guys a chance to shine.  But enough of all that, okay?

Can Koshwal earn a roster spot?: Hard to deny him if he keeps averaging a rebound every two minutes.

MFTW: Terrico White was one of the few players who didn't embarrass himself on Monday, but he also lived up to his reputation for going ghost for extended periods.  It will be interesting to see if he can assert himself on offense while maintaining his efficiency.

Can we get some air time?: Thus far, Detroit's summer league games have been interrupted by the Miami Douche Carnival and a random David Stern press conference.  Tonight, the Kings and Pistons are playing at the same time for some reason.  Sigh...

What do you think? Talk about everything!

I'm excited to watch White today

I was too concerned with monroe(semi-fail) and daye(uber-fail) in the last game to pay attention to him when he didn’t have the ball. I’m interested to see how he helps on defense and how he moves w/out the ball on offense.

This post

Doesn’t mention who we’re playing. Is it a semi-televised practice? Is Egsleder at the final table at the WSOP? Are we playing the Kings again?

I would rather write this than look it up.

Who is on the Heat summer team? Is it pretty much their future roster?

by garrettelliott on Jul 14, 2010 9:05 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't know...

I think, given their current salary situation, you and I might have been able to get a roster spot.

But seriously, here is their summer league roster:
http://www.nba.com/summerleague2010/teams/heat/

Note that these assholes did very well in the draft despite low picks. They got DBB favorite (and sometimes proclaimed ben wallace of the future) Jarvis Varnado and Texas alum Dexter Pittman.

My fault

I kind of disappeared there for a while. I was basically working full time/going to school full time/getting married all at the same time. But two of those three things are finished and now I have the time to be on the internets again without it screwing up my grades or job (or relationship).

Thanks!

A word of advice to my engaged DBB brethren, and I know there’s a few of you out there. Make sure you greet your guests at the church/ceremony because if you wait until the reception you won’t make it to them all. That or you’ll be walking off the dance floor on and off all night to talk to the people you missed.

I know it’s way early, but a great set of childrens books you can read with your children (few years down the road of course) are the Percy Jackson and Olympians series.

I went out on trip up north and decided to read them to kill time. The reading level is that of a 12 year old imo, but the stories are interesting and clean of any profanity.

Attn: Summer League Guards

It’s called a Pick and Roll.

That means the big man is going to set a pick, then roll towards the basket.

You should look for him.

by the89oracle on Jul 14, 2010 11:35 PM CDT up reply actions

My rule if I was coach.

For every time you do NOT look at your big man after he sets a pick, I will remove an eye.

You will learn either very quickly or we’ll know we can cut you right away.

by Terrence J. Lynch on Jul 14, 2010 11:40 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah, too bad for Monroe. He still had a very solid second half, even with all the wasted effort of rolling

by the89oracle on Jul 14, 2010 11:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Seriously, it's why I'd rather play on a team with my 55 year old dad

than my 26 year old brother.

When I set a pick, I roll towards the basket. LOOK FOR ME! My dad knows this and he’s hit me with some pretty passes. My brother just dribbles into a double team and then forces up a bad shot. My dad and I outplay kids not even half his age doing this.

Honestly, I’d say “Wait until the regular season” but then I remembered Stuckey is still our point guard.

by Terrence J. Lynch on Jul 14, 2010 11:48 PM CDT up reply actions

in his defense, what bigs have we had that have been good at rolling to the basket?

big ben might actually have been the best at it last year

by the89oracle on Jul 14, 2010 11:50 PM CDT up reply actions

True.

That’s something I like about Monroe. There’s no floating out, there’s no standing at the three point line, he’s moving towards the basket. He’s doing the right thing there, he could easily just stand out there with the way the guards “distribute” the ball.

I don’t like making excuses for Monroe but dammit that would piss me off something fierce.

by Terrence J. Lynch on Jul 14, 2010 11:59 PM CDT up reply actions

In the Rook vs. Sophs All-Star game 2 years ago, John Hollinger gave Stuckey an “A” and complimented his willingness to routinely look for his bigs. That’s either an “oi vey” or an “it can be done.”

Dumars is a pretty cool guy.

Eh drafts combo guards and doesn’t afraid of anything.

by Terrence J. Lynch on Jul 15, 2010 12:14 AM CDT up reply actions

Drafting for position

Gives you Darko Milicic, Sam Bowie and Wesley Johnson. Recently, Dumars has done a good job of taking the best player available. The players who fall in the draft tend to be those whose capabilities don’t match the position they are supposed to be playing.

Draft talent and worry about fit when you are making trades. LeBron James has the body of a power forward, and can play the two. Ben Wallace has the body of, well, Terrico White. It doesn’t matter. What matters is whether the players can play.

by Kevin Sawyer on Jul 15, 2010 12:42 AM CDT up reply actions

sigh… I have no clue how Darko has anything to do with what I wrote.

Maybe it’s just me, but I think it makes sense to draft players who actually do the things that are important for their positions. Terrico/WrongD/Monrover all have serious holes in their games, specifically holes that are important for their positions: Terrico— passing, Wrong— everything except sometimes scoring, Monroe— rebounding, blocking shots and interior scoring. All those holes were plainly evident in their college stats. Pointing this out = Darko…?

So yeah, obviously you need “talent,” but “talent” starts to not look so talented when it gets beat.

by Gabe F-B on Jul 15, 2010 1:01 AM CDT up reply actions

Terrico White and DaJuan Summers

Showed few signs of being at all talented in college. If White was a rebounding machine, and Summers a major long distance threat, we wouldn’t have been upset with their selections in the second round.

I’m referring to the Monroe, Daye and Stuckey picks, all of whom were good value for their draft position.

by Kevin Sawyer on Jul 15, 2010 9:47 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree that Stuckey was a good value for his position, but the question of whether Stuckey was better suited to PG or SG was never allowed to sort itself out— he was forced to fit into a position that it was unclear he was suited for.

RE: Monroe— His only major statistical advantage over guys like Aldrich, Davis and Whiteside was assists. Aldrich and Davis were more efficient interior scorers, rebounded more and blocked more shots. Whiteside was a less efficient scorer, but had the best defensive stats of any prospect in the draft. How does it make sense to conclude that Monroe is the most talented of the four?

RE: Daye— Ty Lawson. Though to be fair to Jod, Lawson can only play one position, which is obviously a huge red flag and makes him a big bore.

agreed...

Joe D feels that if we do nothing, we’ll be better simply because of health reasons. Why that can be somewhat true, I wouldn’t think that this roster could be contenders for a championship even if healthy. There’s a very slim chance they can be a 40-win with this roster? But to think this roster can seriously compete with the top 3 or 4 teams in the East is almost as laughable as the exchange between Chris Webber and the Wolves GM last night about Darko and the state of the Wolves team…lolol That guy makes Joe D seem like a genius!

by AaronQ on Jul 15, 2010 8:50 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree

Joe’s unwillingness to move pieces has bordered on the ridiculous. I take league rumors with a grain of salt, but it sure sounds like Prince was off the table in the DeMarcus Cousins discussions, which is absurd.

And keep in mind that Ian Mahinmi went for $2M per. Dumars had no interest. Given his recent track record, I’m surprised he didn’t try to find a way to outbid Denver for Al Harrington. You know he was making calls.

But that doesn’t make Monroe a bad pick. Any of the true centers on the board represented a real downgrade in talent. Joe could have traded down, using the pick as bait to get a team to take Rip’s contract, but since he didn’t, I want the best player available.

by Kevin Sawyer on Jul 15, 2010 9:43 AM CDT up reply actions

I think Prince was available.

Because if he wasn’t, I doubt we offer Prince/Villanueva/7th for Brand/2nd like the one rumor had. And coinsidering the fact that Noc was dealt less than 24 hours after the supposed offer of Prince/7 for Noc/5, I’m kind of inclined to believe that deal was never really on the table. Especially considering how in love with Cousins the Kings were.

by Terrence J. Lynch on Jul 15, 2010 10:55 AM CDT up reply actions

Thanks, and I would promise

To keep the team in Detroit. Heck, I would try to get them to actually play in Detroit, because it’s a shorter drive from Toledo to Detroit than from Toledo to Auburn Hills.

by Toledo Joe on Jul 16, 2010 7:44 AM CDT up reply actions

Additionally

Drafting the “best player available” is only useful in exactly 2 circumstances:

1. That talent pans out and makes your team better.
2. You use that talent as an asset to obtain other talent you NEED.

Thus far, the occurrence of 1 is debatable and 2 has not happened. Everyone is hands off for JOD. You know who’s untouchable? Tim Duncan. LeBron James. Kobe Bryant. Unless something catastrophic happens, or there is violent dissent in the locker room (a la Kobe 3 years ago), you don’t even THINK about trading those guys.

Rodney Stuckey is not untouchable. Greg Monroe is not untouchable. And Tayshaun Prince and Rip Hamilton are not worth nearly as much as JOD seems to think. Some day he’s going to realize that Sheeds don’t just fall from the sky every year. Unless the player is THE guy who is absolutely essential to your championship run, improvements can always be made.

Look, I went that whole post without even mentioning Cousins.

I’m pretty sure Pogs were created out of a need to reduce cardboard inventory…I honestly can’t figure out any other reason for why these ever existed.

Every now and then I will come in and say something to everyone on DBB, this is the 1st official one:

The manliness of a man can only be described by another man of equal man like vocabulary and success, a manly hobo may not describe a manly pimp or vice versa. An epic nothing is more substantial than having something and not being epic espicially in manliness . An epic is not made by piecing together a set of heroic lays, adjusting their discrepancies and making them into a continuous narrative. So please, stay epic and manly but go within guide lines of the epic men that you all are.I now leave you with an example of manly epicness of the epic man

Enjoy your epic evening man.

This is my sig, what do I do with it?

Have not seen the last two games

but Monroe is a strange dude. If what critics say is true, that he offers nothing with his right hand, how is this possible with a right hander? I mean, he obviously trained his left hand, but his right is still his natural hand, there has to be something there. Right?

Where in the world is Trent Plaisted?

by Kriz on Jul 15, 2010 10:23 AM CDT reply actions

Monroe is actually left handed, not right-handed

and to answer your question, Plaisted put up some nice numbers in his game last niight…I think 13/8 playing for the Bulls maybe?

by The Boourns on Jul 15, 2010 11:24 AM CDT up reply actions

Plaisted has been doing much better for the Bulls than he did for Philly, possibly enough to earn him a spot in a team’s training camp, at least for the established roster to practice against.

I can't seem to find the video

But Monroe stated in a pre-draft interview that he’s actually right handed (which confused me too). But I guess it’s possible, there are plenty of right handed throwing baseball players that hit and write lefty (grew up playing rec ball with a few myself)

interesting...

he shitastic commentators last night were the ones who said he’s left-handed, and he definitely goes to his left all the time…maybe thats how good he is…

his strongest hand is actually his right hand but he’s playing to his left because if he used his right he’d simply dominate everyone and everything all at the same time…kind of like when Sheed shot 3s left-handed in the all-star game.

2 reasons for that

1. His teammates sucked beyond DaJuan. They were total turnover machine ballhogs that couldn’t hit a jumper to save their lives
2. He was matched up with a 7 foot 300+ pound center. That should have never happened, and caused him to get like no boards and a ton of fouls in the first half

"should have never happened"

but won’t this ultimately happen with some consistency this season?

I realy hope Greg can add some muscle before the regular season. He ought to be jumping in on that personal chef that the rooks and Stuck went in on together.

At the end of Summer League I want to see an in-depth article with Greg Monroe where he outlines the aspects of his game that he needs to work on the most and what he plans to do to have his body prepped and ready to go for the upcoming season. I don’t care if all he says is, “I need to sit down with arnie” but I need to see him show a commitment right off the bat. If he does that, I’ll be very happy with his showing in the Summer League.

random thought

A lot has been said about Ben Wallace’s impact on teaching Monroe. But you know what? Even more so than Ben, you know who I would kill to have around to 1-on-1 mentor Monroe for a few years…

…Antonio McDyess.

witty signature

by Mike Payne on Jul 15, 2010 10:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Me too, that was an amazing loss.

McDyess committed to Dumars and passed up millions in the Iverson trade a couple years back- Ben Wallace a couple years later made a similar gesture, seemingly not even considering any of the other teams out there looking for a defender of his caliber on the cheap. I miss McDyess immensely, but I am very appreciative of the Ben Wallace re-up.. and eventual retire.

Dyess loved us back

He didn’t seem to have the same hire in SA. He still hustled and played solid defense, but he just didn’t have that spark of magic we saw post AI trade.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see both him and Sheed in assistant coach uniforms 3-4 years from now. And even if they aren’t official coaches, they could always do what Hakeem is doing right now and still mentor other players in the offseason.

by bearded thundar on Jul 16, 2010 7:10 AM CDT up reply actions

I really hope

SA doesn’t just trade Dyess out to any old team or a bottom feeder if they end up moving him. That would be a slap in the face to a guy that doesn’t deserve it one bit.

He’d actually be perfect for Boston right now.

by FunkyDonut on Jul 16, 2010 7:29 AM CDT up reply actions

Or Miami……. I’m just saying…….

by garrettelliott on Jul 16, 2010 7:34 AM CDT up reply actions

Dyess is one of a handful of players

that I can forgive if he ends up in Miami and gets a ring. He won’t do that out of his own free will though, but I wouldn’t be mad at him. If he ends up there, it would be via trade.

by FunkyDonut on Jul 16, 2010 7:38 AM CDT up reply actions

i may be wrong

but pretty sure it’ll be near impossible for miami to make trades, at least this year

i believe minimum contracts are very difficult or complicated to move. As for their non-minimum contracs – lebron, wade, bosh, mike miller, haslem – doubt they get traded.

so i don’t see dyess going to miami unless he gets bought out and goes there via his own free will

by mannie32 on Jul 16, 2010 12:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah but that doesn't mean he couldn't get traded to a team who then waives him

just like Denver did. If so, he could wait the 30 days before clearing waivers and then re-sign with SA or he could just go off and sign with whomever he wants. And McDyess ending up on Miami would make me a 1 year fan of the Heat…which is depressing and exciting at the same time.

by The Boourns on Jul 16, 2010 1:07 PM CDT up reply actions

i would be torn… on the one hand, i never want lebron to win a title. on the other hand, I want mcdyess to win one so very, very badly. i honestly think my love for dyess would win the day, as long as he were a contributor to the team (i don’t want him to get his ring as the 12th man, sitting on a bench)

by the89oracle on Jul 16, 2010 11:44 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

i still wouldnt be able to root for the heat

if dyess goes ring chasing with the heat it would lower his stock with me. thats only if he goes there of his own free will.
