According to Marc Stein's twitter account, Will Bynum's agent is announcing that Bynum has re-signed in Detroit.

[Ed. note -- UPDATE: Two trusty Detroit reporters, Chris Iott of MLIVE and Vincent Goodwill of The Detroit News, are saying their Pistons sources informed them that Bynum's deal is 3 years for $9.75 million, not $10.5 million. As Dan Feldman astutely notes, the Pistons were deceiving at first about Gordon's and Villanueva's contracts. Whatever the final figure is, it's a great deal for the Pistons - both $10.5 and $9.75 million are great value for Bynum's talent. -- Packey]

just beat me to it

I posted the ESPN official story

I do like this deal, but the thing that scares me is that if we use the MLE on some no name, even if we let Tay and Wilcox expire we’re going to have about zero cap space next year

by bearded thundar on Jul 28, 2010 12:15 PM CDT reply actions

that's why you have to trade Tay

Joe has to keep up with the game in order to keep the roster competitive. Playing at the salary cap without ever trading expirings is not going to improve the roster unless he hits on 5 straight draft picks, which OKC has sorta done.

LOL!

by Boney on Jul 28, 2010 12:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Or keep tay and trade rip for expirings. Then we’ll have a sick amount coming off the books and a new CBA to work with.

by tads on Jul 28, 2010 4:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, if the owners win, it should mean that the players get paid less, so maybe our little bit of capspace will go a long way.

The players want to keep the “status quo” so if they win I guess it will just be business as usual. But yeah, you never know.

Chris Iott has different salary figure
Different numbers floating around but Will Bynum re-signs with #Pistons for three years and $9.75 million.

I’ll wait for official Pistons release, but if it’s in fact $9.75, I love this re-signing even more.

by Kriz on Jul 28, 2010 12:24 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Yeah...low-balled only in the sense that everyone else overvalued who they paid

Bynum deserves a nice contract but last season was his first year to really show what he could do and it was riddled with ankle injuries. You can’t pay a guy $5M a year like some of the other “lesser” PGs got this off-season when no one is very interested and he’s coming off some nagging ankle injuries.

I’d say this is right up there as one of the better signings of the off-season for any team if only because I think we are paying him what he’s actually worth.

Also, using $3M a year on Bynum leaves at most around $2.8 for the remainder of our MLE so I’m starting to think that JoD won’t be using that MLE on someone unless he got insanely good value for it.

When I heard this, and I seriously expected to hear something stupid like, 5 years $25 million, or something. Super excited about this deal. A healthy Bynum is absolutely worth $3.5 million/yr, and probably more.

I'm really surprised no one else gave him an offer sheet.

Anyway, good to have him back at this price.
We got Ben Wallace and Will Bynum for cheaper than:
Raymond Felton
Kyle Lowry
JJ Reddick
Wesley Matthews
Travis Outlaw
Al Harrington
Richard Jefferson
Amir Johnson
Drew Gooden
Channing Frye

I don’t know about you, but I think I’d rather have Wallace and Bynum than any of those individuals. I may be disappointed in the moves not made so far, but I can’t complain much about the ones that have been made.

by tads on Jul 28, 2010 4:08 PM CDT reply actions

sarcasm with the "SICK"? haha

I’m actually hoping we don’t sign anyone with our MLE. Don’t want to add to our payroll unless we’re getting a very solid guy that can actually help us at this stage. Don’t see anyone out there.

A trade is still in order hopefully. Let’s not use the MLE – unless maybe it’s a one year MLE deal.

by mannie32 on Jul 28, 2010 4:24 PM CDT up reply actions

There's nobody left out there that's worth anywhere near the MLE.

Josh Boone would be nice for like $1.5/yr. Rasho would be nice in 2005. Has Louis Amundson signed anywhere yet? He is a more than competent reserve at the 4 or 5 and has been ridiculously productive in limited minutes. His per/36 numbers last year were 11pts/11reb/2blk/55%fg. And I’m pretty sure we could get him for well under the MLE. Probably something in the $2-3m range would be in order. And don’t say we have the same guy in Jerebko— Amundson rebounds and blocks shots at a much higher rate, can actually defend larger players, and is much more efficient on offense.

by The Joel on Jul 28, 2010 4:48 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think Amundson has been signed yet...and apparently it seems less likely that Phoenix will re-sign him.

Right now I think an MLE sign = less minutes for Monr-ebko-nueva

As hard as it is to imagine us having a legit season with out a real center, the truth is, we will be only slightly less legit without one. If it looks like we are getting into the playoffs, then we can go sign a warm body, in the mean time it is possible for us to scrape by with Wallace and J-Max at the center and hope one of our other bigs can transition over.

by tads on Jul 29, 2010 12:13 PM CDT up reply actions

in all honesty Big Ben was one of the best defensive centers last season

That isn’t a position of concern right now as he’s reportedly even stronger now after a summer of heavy lifting.

My biggest concern is about the future, as there’s no way we can hope to consistently go deep in the playoffs with a 40 year old undersized big man

I don't know...

if he’s getting stronger this late in his career…he might be even better by the time he’s 40…

Plus if his fro starts going grey which I think it already has, he’d have the ridiculous intimidation factor of a Don King fro to remind people just how badass he is and how pathetic all these 20 something big shots are getting schooled defensively by a grey-haired muscley man.

strength =/ athleticism

He can be as strong as he wants, but he can’t be aging. Joints wear down, muscles fire slower and as a whole he becomes less mobile. Part of what makes Big Ben so special is his lateral quickness and ability to guard just about any player; I highly doubt he’s going to be able to retain that, and already he’s shown signs of slowing down. He was very good last year, but it was obvious he just didn’t have his old explosiveness, and that’s not a criticism of him – flat out he’s just getting old.

I think he's the greatest player of all time

There’s really no question that individually, no one did anything close except for MJ and Kareem (highest ppg and most points). However he didn’t win, for some reason or another (it’s very hard to know for sure as there are hardly any records kept on the guy) and that’s why he gets sat down behind Bill Russell.

Also part of Wilt’s d-rating could have been his extreme rebounding, and not actual defense. It could very well have been the case that while he rebounded every chance he got, he just let people score on him at will

Survivor: Detroit

This season is going to be filled with drama. The Rodney vs. Will plans to be a huge battle but might take a back seat to the battle of the Huskies, Gordon vs. Hamilton. Then in the front court there is the race to unseat Tayshaun, between Jerebko and Daye, and CV31 vs. the entire city of Detroit in his own personal battle for redemption. Hopefully it will be good for basketball, Kuester can find ways to keep everyone playing hard every day all season long, and pulling people that are starting to slack.

Shaq/ Wallace/ Wilcox

Well regardless of whether Shaq would play well for us, he's not worth the MLE and he's not worth delaying the development of our younger players

While Shaq is clearly only fit to play center at this point, having him in our frontcourt would mean guaranteeing him minutes regardless of how good we are. And those are minutes that we could at least throw at our younger bigs.
