A Look At The Potential Buyers Of The Detroit Pistons
I broke down three of the candidates to buy the Pistons over at SB Nation Detroit because it could have an affect on three of Detroit's teams. Head over, read up, and come back to share your thoughts. (DBB shout out within).

Thanks for the Shout-out Packey
I don’t know who these two other guys are, but I’m pretty sure Ilitch will destroy ’em
Interesting point...
and this was discussed at the Tigers board, but wouldn’t owning all three franchises give Illitch reason to start his own television station? Right now FS Detroit still holds the rights to all 3 franchises, but in the future this could be a huge money maker for Illitch.

It would probably bring in that extra revenue he needs
especially if he’s going to be paying upwards of $1 billion for everything.

I can see it happening. The Ilitch family stands to make a crap ton of money if they do that.
I also feel obligated to point out that Mike Ilitch is no longer in control of the Ilitch family assets and is not the one who would be purchasing the team, that’d be his son Michael. Mike gave up his control a few years ago.

Illitch Sr. is still giving the order though.
I don’t see Michael Ilitch Jr. saying anything about how desperate Detroit needs to keep the pistons
I don’t want add player does not have blue collar mentality,
even if he is great player. Piston should not quit your job. - OK from J
Agreed
Much like the Yankees before George passed, Dad was still the boss even if his son was the one with the title.
I agree. But Mike wouldn’t be the one we call owner. His son would be. Everyone is reporting it like Mike Ilitch is the one they are talking about but it is actually his son now.

Not that getting into the telecomm industry is easy...
Trust me, I’ve been trying to get funding for my BoournsTV idea for years now (Boourns 24/7), but getting into the telecomm industry is not easy…He’d be better off leveraging his ownership of the three teams for a better deal from FSDetroit in the short-term than creating his own station.
Trying to fund the purchase of a new team, the construction of a new arena (while demolishing at least one of the other 2), and 3 teams all currently playing at mediocre to above average levels alone will be difficult. Add to it the massive amounts of money required to launch a new tv network and I don’t see this happening any time soon.
On the other hand, if he said to FSDetroit, “This is a one for all and all for one and it ain’t gonna be cheap” bargaining stance, then he could likely get more money out of FSDetroit while avoiding any of the start up costs of a new network.

it's definitely not gonna happen immediately...
but it is a strong possibility for the future.

Illitch
Out of those three he’s the one I hope gets them. We all know what he’s done with the Red Wings and he’s made the Tigers respectable, at least on the payroll that is. With his ties to all the other teams here he has to be option #1.

Illitch
Because of what everyone before me mentioned- plus he just loves Detroit so much he entered bidding entirely to retain the team in the city he was born in and made his fortune from. I really like that concept.

The Potolos Group freaks my shit out
Too many similarities to Clay Bennett/OKC
- Friend of David Stern
- No ties to Detroit
- Shrewd businessman (Bennett is not but his ownership group is filled with them)
If this guy ends up acquiring the Pistons, I’m afraid we’ll be looking at a team in Vegas, London, or Seattle 5 years from now…probably in that order as far as most to least likely.
