Charlotte looking to trade Dampier

Due to the recent trade, Dampier cannot be officially traded by Charlotte until after September 13th.  Furthermore, his $13M salary is non-guaranteed and the team that holds his rights can waive him and be held accountable for $0 of that $13M if done before the start of the season.  So why would this make sense for the Pistons?

1) They're trying to sell the team before the season starts and trading Rip Hamilton for Erick Dampier would provide the team with a slightly better financial outlook that could ultimately boost the final price of the team and/or make a buyer more willing to purchase the team quickly

2) They are trying to alleviate some of the logjam in the backcourt and Rip has been the obvious trade chip that JoD has been offering up for over a year now.

3) JoD rarely goes into the season with a full roster and yet with the Terrico White signing we're currently locked and loaded at 15...Trading Rip for Dampier straight up would allow JoD to waive Dampier and start the season with 14 players on the roster

I don't know if I could support a Dampier for Rip Hamilton trade straight up since it gives us nothing but future financial alleviation and something tells me that JoD's loyalty and love for Rip makes this less likely given he'd be sending him to probably the one owner that Rip absolutely despises in Michael Jordan but would Karen Davidson force his hand if it meant a few extra gold coins in her pocket?  Lastly, even if Rip is over-priced and on the decline, it pains me to see us moving him for nothing more than a waiver player but at this point it kind of "is what it is."

Charlotte already gave up their 2012 first round draft pick (although it is top 14 protected and isn't unprotected until 2016) to Chicago so I don't know if they'd be willing to give up their 2011 1st round but if I were Joe I'd be asking for it.

Thoughts?

I would trade Rip for anything that could improve the team at this point … but I doubt Jod’s desperate enough to trade him for a partially guaranteed just yet. Rip’s gotta be worth draft picks at least, I would think.

The entire league knows Dumars wants to move Prince and Hamilton

Which unfortunately diminishes their value.

Yeah...which is why if we're going to get anything for them,

they’ll have to play meaningful minutes prior to the trade deadline and stay injury free. The former limits the development of what we consider our core moving forward and the latter should be considered a significant risk given last year’s results/health

The Bobcats are already in trouble salary wise

Why would they sign up for three years of Rip Hamilton? I imagine they are going to deal him to a team with a trade exception, which we don’t have. A trade for tayshaun would make sense, but why would they want another small forward when they have Gerald Wallace?

by tads on Aug 25, 2010 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Good points...

But does any team have a trade exception of that size at this point?

And as far as salary trouble being a blocker is concerned I’d say this:

1) Business outlook for Charlotte is positive given MJ’s presence as majority owner has already generated greater ad-sponsorship interest
2) Charlotte has Larry Brown as their head coach who has an affinity for Rip Hamilton
3) Charlotte is trying to win right now so a 2 year with an additional year non-guaranteed for a SG that could add a lot of depth and balance to their team makes this attractive.
4) This year they’re way over the salary cap but even with a waiver on Dampier, they’re still going to be at $65M and thusly over the luxury tax.
5) Next year includes Boris Diaw with a player option for $9M, and $5.6M in team options that come off the books and after next year their financial outlook isn’t extremely negative.

But yeah, I think the biggest question would be is Jordan willing to potentially get fleeced again by JoD?

I'm of course assuming that Diaw will not want to play for Charlotte after this year...

of course the $9M may make it worth his time.

Perhaps the deal goes through because Jordan tries to flip the script, if he thinks he can pull one over on us. Otherwise, I imagine Charlotte goes to toronto for the deal and comes away with Calderon, since they can absorb Dampier’s whole contract with Chris Bosh’s exception. That would deliver the PG that maybe bobcat fans could get behind.

Larry Brown would probably hate Calderon

Calderon is an awful defensive player. But what do I know.

hi guys Bobcat fan here

i was just looking around and saw this post and thoght id comment. i dont think salary is gona stop us from making a trade for a player that will help the team and i like Rip but i think we are looking for a PG and i doubt we use Dampier on him but i have brought up Rip a couple times on Rufus on Fire

by TS BOBCAT on Aug 25, 2010 5:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Welcome sir!

Thanks for the feedback. DBB as a whole loves to see other team communities comment on our sometimes ridiculous trade scenarios.

If a PG is what you guys needed, I’m sure you could convince a few folks to move Stuckey your way…he’s not exactly loved in D-town.

by The Boourns on Aug 25, 2010 6:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm in the camp of, "Give Stuckey until the trade deadline to prove he can make it as our franchise PG"

But Will bynum is gunning for him. Assuming you guys waived or traded Dampier for an exception of some kind, your team could take back two players.

A swap of Stuckey and Maxiell for Boris Diaw would work, but I don’t see Pistons fans agreeing to that since we really need a center. Maxiell and Stuckey for Mohammed would work as well. I could see fans taking interest in this as Nazr at least has some defensive skillsets that could complement Greg Monroe at that end of the floor. I think though for PIstons fans to feel comfortable with parting with the baby eater and Stuckey, a draft pick would have to come back our way. Both of these guys were 1st rounders and both have a fair amount of upside.

Signing Stuckey to an extension this season and then trading him could result in some other trade scenarios, but I don’t see something like that happening either.

Really, I don’t think there is much we could do for you guys by way of point guard…now if you’re looking for a combo-guard, well you’ve come to the right place.

iv heard someone over on ROF say Rip would make a decent PG

iv never watched him enough to tell and i was wondering what you guys thought of that

by TS BOBCAT on Aug 25, 2010 9:15 PM EDT up reply actions

That would be turrible. He’s just not a PG. He can handle a bit of dribbling and play making but he’s a shooter first, second, and third.

by garrettelliott on Aug 25, 2010 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions

AW HELL NAW

Like Garret said, his whole game is based on coming off of screens. He can get some assists but he’s a shooter.

by Biz Markie Moon on Aug 25, 2010 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah its brutal

rip has alright court vision for a 2 and get some assists now and then but his handles are really terrible.

by dandresden on Aug 25, 2010 10:23 PM EDT up reply actions

From the games that he had to take over PG duties. I’d rather him play point than Stuckey. Just a slight opinion, and a little biased. Me Likey Rip time.

but i doubt that the cats would, even w/brown probably loving the idea of adding rip to the team. That kind of salary dump in a small market is probably more valuable to them then rip would be. He’s like a giant trade exception.

Erick Dampier

I would do that trade, we are so log jammed in the backcourt someone is going to have to go before the season starts.

Here's a thought...

Toronto moves:

Calderon + Reggie Evans to Charlotte

Charlotte moves:

Dampier to Detroit

Detroit moves:

Rip to Toronto

Yeah I looked at his player card on RealGM and they didn't have a position listed for him

Looking at their depth chart on shamsports though

the kleiza signing slots DeRozan at SG. Although, Rip has obviously been okay with coming off the bench behind 2 guys who arguably don’t deserve to play ahead of him so maybe he could play behind Jarrett Jack and DeRozan.

I’ve watched more than my share of Raptor games. They drafted DeRozan with the intent of playing him at SG, even tho they need an SF after the trade

At this point

I’m willing to take cap space and late first round pick just to get Rip out of our rotation.

I honestly don’t like Gordon, and think Rip was a more useful player in his prime, but he’s over the edge and has been bad for chemistry of late and BG is still in the cusp of his prime.

ohh and Amir Johnson wants to disagree

sigh

Do you want me to name the rest of that list? The no names that never make it to an NBA court. Sure, there are a few late first rounders that have done something in the NBA, but most don’t do anything other than play some D-league ball.

The beginning of the end of the misery

by Latif Masud on Aug 27, 2010 1:50 AM EDT up reply actions

you clearly missed the point

The point is that late first rounders do hold value, it’s only the teams that don’t treat them as useful that don’t capitalize. The Spurs seem to get quality players every year our of the draft because they make smart picks. Dumars on the other hand has had good players fall to him, but then do bizarre moves like the Walter Sharpe situation
