i guess if tmac has anything left in the tank this isnt terrible

but if its true he wont accept a minor role then tay and/or rip better be gone.

tmac was once quite formidable. who knows what he has left?

McGrady has been reduced to a role like that non-athletic guy in pick-up basketball who just jacks up threes with no remorse.

by Kriz on Aug 7, 2010 10:28 PM EDT reply actions

Rec'd even though I sort of disagree

I’m a little optimistic. The fact that he agreed to sign for the vet’s minimum shows that he may have some dedication to the idea that he can’t be the scoring champion anymore so he’s gotta change his game.

Still though, hilarious comment.

by Biz Markie Moon on Aug 8, 2010 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually, what I don't get is why McGrady does it?

If you’re going to sign for the minimum, and you’re going to be a back-up (he’d be 3rd string SG and back-up SF), why sign with a team that’s likely to miss the playoffs? I gotta believe some contender is interested in him for the minimum.

Because I'm the Lynch... and I'm awwwesome!

I tweeted last night that McGrady was in Michigan with Shane Battier...

my buddy who saw him at the bar predicted he’d be signed today. I would’ve ran with it but it’s not the middle of a Tuesday.

Seriously though, McGrady at the league minimum is fine, but there hasssss to be some kind of other move in mind with it…

Looking at this from TMac's perspective.

He probably wants to sign with a team that will pay him the full MLE and/or a team that can give him playing time so he can get a better contract down the line.

The latter presumes that Tayshaun will get traded (especially if he signs for the minimum).

by Quick Darshan on Aug 7, 2010 11:44 PM EDT reply actions

Amazing Discussion So Far

This is a great pickup for the Pistons if true. I wouldn’t want to give TMac a real contract, and if he’s a chemistry problem (which I suspect he will be), you just cut him and you’re out $1M or so. What’s wrong with that?

In terms of dice rolling, AI was a loser, I think it was packaged differently, but the deal was clearly for his expiring contract, but TMac, at $1M+, this has a lot more upside. He may actually surprise you here.

Also, you may assume that some moves will be made before the start of the season. The TMac signing doesn’t have to impact that, it’s kind of a given Tay and Rip will be shipped at some point regardless, so what’s all the complaining about? It’s really an independent discussion.

by V. on Aug 8, 2010 12:22 AM EDT reply actions

So am I. The only reason this potential signing (let’s not forget, it’s not a done deal) gives me pause is the position logjam. I don’t have anything against T-Mac as a player or a person.

by Matt Watson on Aug 8, 2010 12:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Like I said up there, I'd really like to get Daye and White some minutes.

With McGrady on the team and no deals, our roster would be something like this:

Stuckey/Bynum
Hamilton/Gordon/McGrady/White
Prince/Daye/Summers
Jerebko/Villanueva/Maxiell
Wallace/Monroe/Wilcox

Because I'm the Lynch... and I'm awwwesome!

by Terrence J. Lynch on Aug 8, 2010 12:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Think "Big Picture"

Also think “what Joe D is really thinking”. I honestly don’t see that roster on Openig Night. But, MW’s right…this may be a little premature.

by V. on Aug 8, 2010 12:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Right, but I thought "big picture" when we signed Ben Gordon.

Like “OK, we’re spending another $11 million on the SG position? Yeah right. He’s got a deal lined up to move Rip. No way he spends $23 million on two SGs.”

And then nothing happened.

And like everyone is saying, this is a relatively minor thing. If he didn’t have a deal lined up when he’s paying a guy 8 figures, is he really going to line up a deal for a guy he’s paying the league minimum? This might even be a depth signing after watching all his players get hurt last year. I don’t really know what Dumars is thinking with this deal. Is it a pre-cursor to another move? A desperate attempt to draw in fans? Perhaps he thinks McGrady will be a great contributor to the team?

I Think Rip Was Going To Be Moved

..until he got hurt. Same with Tay. The whole situation was so toxic with injuries and stuff, hard to tell exactly what the plan was. When the two pieces you want to move to rebuild get hurt and lose their value, what do you do next? That’s why I think Joe D decided to “hold” and not sell at a loss.

by V. on Aug 8, 2010 1:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Which is what I bought at the deadline, too.

Though I think with Rip, you just need to get out his contract. Even if you have to attach a little incentive (like Summers or a 2nd rounder), but if you can clear out his salary plus what Prince and Wilcox have coming off the board, you might have something going into the 2011 offseason.

The fact that zero contenders want McGrady for the vet min (after he went on a workout tour) says it all…

The chances of him contributing are very, very slim. If the signing actually happens, it is primarily for PR and rainbow purposes. From a business standpoint I can see why the Pistons brass think it’s worth a shot.

Minimum deals for washed up vets —> meh.

Wasting early 2nd round picks three years in a row, $23mils worth of okay SG’s, etc… —> :(

HOw BOut

Instead of wasting money at a spot which already has too much cash thrown at we sign someone big…I dunno maybe Louis Amundson….he’s a free agent used to being a back up roll and he can play the 4….maybe the five. I mean there are 70 free agents out there there have to be a few nig guys we could sign instead of t-mac.

Unless JoD has plans of a trade.

by TDP on Aug 8, 2010 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions

ehhh....what the hell, let's do it

I’m at the point that as long as it doesn’t hurt our future cap space, I’m fine with any move Joe does.

And look on the brightside guys, if Joe’s getting T-Crack, it must mean that he’s either working on a deal to get rid of Rip or at least has found suitors. I really can’t see any other reason to get him, even on at veterans minimum, if we can’t give him 10 minutes of play time per game. That would just cause more problems than it could possibly solve, in loo of chemistry that is.
