Mike Ilitch Wants To Purchase Pistons And Move Them To Detroit

This just in from the Detroit Free Press:

Sports and pizza boss Michael Ilitch said today he wants to buy the Detroit Pistons basketball team and move them to a new arena in downtown Detroit.

From Ilitch himself (via MLIVE):

"Marian and I grew up here, we raised our family here and we built our businesses here. Detroit is our home. When I read in the paper there was the chance that this great sports town could lose one of its professional sports franchises, I just didn't see how we could let that happen. The Pistons, just like the Red Wings, Tigers and the Lions, have a rich and storied tradition in this community and they've brought pride to fans and our community. You all know I love sports – all sports, from amateur sports to the various pro sports we've had the privilege to be involved with, and like a lot of others I'm sure, I really want to see the Pistons remain the Detroit Pistons." "We talked about it internally and when you take our 33 years of experience in professional sports, our commitment to this community, our passion for winning and pursuing championships, and you couple that with the opportunity to have a local, engaged owner for the Pistons, we decided to take a run at it. We believe we could bring a lot to the table that could be tremendously positive for the Pistons franchise, the NBA, and the fans of this community. So, today, we formally notified the Detroit Pistons that we have interest in purchasing the team. This is a required first-step and we look forward to the opportunity to move forward in the process."

UPDATE (via Detroit Free Press):

"No one should get too excited just yet, because this is the first step in what could be a long process," the Ilitch statement read. "There is a lot of due diligence to take place, and who even knows if the Pistons would accept any potential future offer. But I can tell you that we are serious about this, we’ll be aggressive in the process, and we’re going to take a real hard run at it because it makes sense for our organization." The statement added, "Whether or not we end up buying this Piston team, we remain focused on a new arena in the city of Detroit, and that will serve as a great catalyst for future economic development in the city."

Anybody think this is why they signed T-Mac

There was some discussion that Illitch had a hard-on for aging superstars on the Tigers, so does anybody see any correlation?

Wings too. But with the Wings, they manage to come together and win.

True. But Damon is an aging hall of famer, too. Not sure about the others (not real big on baseball), but he applies

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Aug 9, 2010 12:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Without getting into a huge debate about it

I’m not sure if Damon is HOF material. I don’t know how he compares to current HOF’ers, but he’s definitely not a first-ballot player. Guys that the Red Wings have signed (Hull, Larionov, Robitalle, Modano, etc.) rank among the greatest of all-time.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/tim_marchman/07/08/hall.of.famers/index.html?xid=FanHouse

Again, I don’t watch much baseball. I just know Damon has been one of the few I’ve enjoyed watching play for years and years and years now. His heads up, double steal in the World Series last year was a classic moment. Either way, it seems a lot of people (judging by comments on blogs and the Free Press and the like) seem to think he’ll get into the hall of fame. Even an SI writer does.

I stand corrected then

On a more related topic, I wonder whether this would shrink the Tigers’ payroll at all.

Damon will definitely make the HOF

Jeter is regarded as one of the best players of all time, and Damon is only slightly behind him in just about every category, and I believe ahead in RBIs. Granted he’s also a bit older and has played longer, but he’s still a lock to make the HOF eventually

I said it quite a few times before, Illitch fancies himself towards superstars, and tends to get many of them on the decline (as that is the only time they are willing to come to Detroit)

confirming what we probably all already assumed
August 9, Detroit Free Press: The Ilitch bid is for the entire Palace Sports & Entertainment organization, not just for the basketball team itself. If successful, that means that the Ilitches would also own the Palace of Auburn Hills arena, the DTE Energy Music Theatre, and other aspects of the Palace network.

I have no clue what he plans to do with the Palace, as it still is a very good venue, but the DTE building is worth quite a bit of money and a reason on its own to buy the Pistons

Terrific

I know a lot of people have reservations about the the Illitch family owning all 3 of the Wings, Tigers, and Pistons, but it’s hard to look at this as anything other than a win all around. We spent a significant amount of time collectively wringing our hands about the possibility of losing the Pistons. Anything that guarantees them to not only stay in town, but move back to downtown is tremendous. PLUS, having the Wings and Pistons sharing an arena will prevent any future situations like we faced in 08 when the Wings played a home Finals game at the same time the Pistons played an ECF home game. Not like we’re at all close to having that situation repeat or anything.

by Other Matt on Aug 9, 2010 12:31 PM EDT reply actions

The only team possibly in trouble is the Tigers

With Illitch’s money being split three ways (assuming he buys the Pistons), will that shrink the amount he’s willing to spend on the Tigers? I agree though, this is nothing but a good thing for the Pistons.

We have nothing to worry about as far as money goes.

Baseball Payrolls Are WAYYYYY more than Basketball Payrolls

The amount of money it costs to be awesome at basketball is so much less than baseball. It’s really a difference of one player on a max contract that actually performs, not a lot of waste in the rest of your roster, and you draft decently. Why wouldn’t he want to pay the money to be awesome?

by tads on Aug 9, 2010 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions

clarification...

I’m grumbling about baseball (as rob said) and think this transaction proves to be a good thing for the Tigers.

I’ll just blockquote my comment from BYB here.

a move like this probably removes from the Tigers payroll. That reduces our ability to sign top tier free agents and resign current players. However, payroll changes impact the line of thinking of management. Drafting smart will have an increased priority.

Immediately this is bad because currently we have a very bad minor league system. Future wise it could be very good because prospects do have their uses.

As long as the payroll doesn’t get severely reduced I’d say that this might be positive.

Now that’s about the impact on the Tigers. For the Pistons this is probably good too because Illitch likes to win and has never been known for holding back on payroll and in general has had pretty good GM’s with him franchises to run them successfully. So good move for the Pistons as well.

With DTE Engery Music Theater being the most attended concert venue in the country

and the added diversification that Palace Sports & Entertainment would bring Illitch, I’d think that if anything it will allow Illitch to spend even more on the Tigers in the long run.

As long as now other heavily monied bidders come in, I’m expecting an onslaught of activity and a lot of player turnover once this thing starts moving down the line.

No way Joe D doesn’t know this is happening, I bet he is just lining up a series of moves so quick it’ll look like Anderson Silva taking out Chael Sonnen after getting the beaten and bloodied until all but the last minute of the last round of UFC this weekend.

I’m still not too excited though… Let’s hope some vegas playboy doesn’t scramble together with a $500 mil counter proposal.

Sonnen jinxed himself by being way too cocky ahead of time. Ilitch wants to buy Pistons

My main concern is can Ilitch handle owning three teams, at times he has struggled to own the two he already has. Needless to say at least this draws interest and if nothing else more interested buyers as well. It would be hard to not sell the team to Ilitch as long as he isn’t low balling them. Hopefully this isn’t the plan for the $65 million coming off the Tigers payroll, but $7 Hot-N-Ready pizza’s seems likely if he buys the Pistons http://puremichigansports.com/2010/08/09/detroit-tigersred-wings-owner-mike-ilitch-officially-expresses-interest-in-buying-the-detroit-pistons/

Detroit will never become what it was

I think the first step of Detroit becoming ‘fixed’ is realizing that is never going to be what it was. So many people in the city are waiting for handouts, waiting for new jobs, politicians waiting for increased gov’t revenue so they can go back to business as usual. Once people get over the fact that we aren’t going to be chicago, at least not soon, things will get better. It is still a cool location, the infrastructure is there to make whatever building you want to put there possible. As the thinking goes less from what it isn’t, to more of what it could be, the people who used to profit from the corrupt, broken Detroit will be exposed and forced to leave (i.e. kilpatrick). Hopefully some bold people will venture down there and set about creating something completely new, but completely different, and Detroit will rise again, resembling very little of what it once was.

What company in their right mind would want to start up a new division in Detroit if 80% of the young populace doesn’t even have a high school diploma, let alone college degree. Not to mention you wouldn’t be able to pull people in from other cities until Detroit’s reputation is repaired a bit, and as you know, new jobs are a key part of that process. So as you can see, it’s somewhat of a paradox, as you can’t do much to improve the city until the eduction is fixed, and that likely won’t be fixed without big donors.

Companies looking for only college graduates won’t be recruiting directly from the city, they’ll bring in these people from the suburbs and universities in michigan.

but therin lies the problem

Not many people would want to go to Detroit just for an average job. Either it would have to greatly overpay or be an up coming field. Regardless of what us near by may think of the city, it has a greatly tarnished reputation with the rest of the world (yes world, that was not a misprint).

I would.

Being part of something new is always a good risk/investment. If the city doesn’t show signs of improvement in 3-5 years I’ll go elsewhere and will be marginally behind where I’d be had I gone to say Chicago. If the city does show signs of improvement and in 10 years is taking off, I’ll be in a great position in the city being part of the first-movers.

I, like Dyess, would certainly join up, if a quality job was offered and I had a good place to move into. Especially in this job market where good jobs are a premium and can be scarce. A lot is in the air right now, but if the right people are driving the progress and growth, then it’ll work… always that damn “potential” though.

I think you are grossly exagerating

not only are those numbers off. but Detroit has some of the nations top community colleges and universities a stones throw away. so there is a large enough talent pool within the state that No industry would have any problem hiring from within. One of the biggest gripes that Uof M had a year or so ago is that they were turning out all of these top students in proffesions that the State of Mich. didn’t have the industry to support. Thus they were losing them all to out of state companies.

There are jobs, just too many people are underqualified. Also many of the unemployed are preferring to keep collecting their checks and stay lazy until that fund dries out, and then get another job. Listen to 97.1’s afternoon show, they talk about it quite often, at least 2 days out of the week.

dont buy this. there isnt a ton of sweet jobs available. there are some people that scam the system but for the most part people want jobs but not whats being offered out there. sure you can get a job at walmart making 9 an hour, but if your unemployment pays more than that then stay on it and keep looking for something that you support your family with. you pay into it, you earn unemployment, its not like welfare where its just given to you even if you just want to be a bum.

… is an incredibly important distinction. I don’t blame people for not accepting 15 hour per week, $9/hour jobs at WalMart if doing so forfeits their unemployment benefits.

I was unemployed for 6 months after graduation, and I wasn’t eligible for unemployment. I took a PT job in retail so I could help pay the rent. But I’d be lying if I didn’t wish I could collect unemployment while waiting for something better.

Also, it would be great if you’d shell out a few bucks to get your sarcasm meter fixed.

In closing, keep doin’ what you do and I’ll keep giving you shit when present poorly informed opinions as fact. I’ll also try to give you props when you make astute observations, which is often.

Honestly I feel that sarcasm is abused here, people use it way too much to the point that it gets difficult to tell when people are serious and when they are not.

And also you’ve never once given my props that I can recall. So far you’ve only given me shit on just about all that say, and quite frankly I’m getting fed up with it.

In the same way you say not everything is my expertise, who gave you the position of moderator? That role lies within only the editors and managers, and last I checked I’ve been working with Mike to produce articles, not getting told off for my behavior. Not to mention that I’ve done far more for this site of late than you have, you haven’t even made a single fanpost/fanshot yet.

Boney gets a lot of shit for his form “moderation”, and I don’t see any reason why you should get away with it yourself. You’ve attacked my word just as much as Boney has chased after gulker, save that you don’t mention my name in every sarcastic post you make.

whoa whoa whoa

first:

Boney gets a lot of shit for his form "moderation", and I don’t see any reason why you should get away with it yourself.

Colin is the Anti-Boney, where Colin uses rational points to dispute poorly-formed arguments, Boney uses insults and repetition to bash people he doesn’t like. I respect the hell out of Colin M as a fair, impartial and reasonable advocate for “no BS”. He’s called me out before— deservedly so.

In the same way you say not everything is my expertise, who gave you the position of moderator?

This community moderates itself. It has always been this way. It has moderated itself precisely in the way that Colin operates— by calling people on their shit when it doesn’t add up. Unlike me and my oft-drunken firebomb approach, Colin does it with class.

Honestly I feel that sarcasm is abused here, people use it way too much to the point that it gets difficult to tell when people are serious and when they are not.

Really, BT, I think you’re the only one that has a problem with it.

That role lies within only the editors and managers, and last I checked I’ve been working with Mike to produce articles, not getting told off for my behavior.

Your articles and analysis are entirely respected and appreciated by most everyone here, but Colin makes a good point.

Do you remember last summer, when you posted on DBB as “Ali”, how you took a lot of heat from people about your behavior as a commenter? It came to the point that you left for many months, then came back as “Bearded Thundar” and started dropping awesome fanposts with great analysis. Thing is, you’ve got that great rep, but are appearing to form another one— by nit picking every little comment whether it needs it or not, boasting about your expertise on every little subject and being a claimer in general (as in your comment above).

Let’s just take it easy, man. Your articles and analysis are a great value to this community, and as Colin himself said they deserve a lot of respect. If multiple people are bugged about something here, it might make sense to take it to heart.

I apologize for the public call-out, but you mentioned me by name and I felt it necessary to weigh in accordingly (and also to defend Colin M, whom I feel is the one prophesied to restore balance to the force).

In a sense I’m glad this is finally out and over with, and you have to understand that a lot of my arrogance does stem from literally being at the top of my class at just about everything I’ve done. I can’t help it about the nitpicking, that’s just how I was raised by my parents (and part of the reason why I’m already working in the med school).

As for the beer gut, the answer’s simple, eat smaller meals and just spread it out across the day. Most people don’t realize that you actually greatly accelerate your metabolism by eating 6 small meals than 3 big ones + going to a bar (just be sure to count the beer as a meal and you’re fine).

If you’ve never done compounds lifts, then I suggest you buy the book. It’s the best of its kind in that is gives entire chapter long break downs of each movement.

If you do know the movements, then just look up the routine. It’s actually what I’m using right now (want to get my squat up to 400 and then will switch to an isolation routine).

Graduation Rates are easily fudgeable

If you want to make headlines, ignore the kids who get GED’s or who graduate through a vocational program, or who take more than 4 years to graduate.

Time says it was 58% in 2009

Yet the very organization they cite, Americas Promise Alliance, puts it at 38%.

When money is involved you can always find ways to fudge the numbers. The thing to notice however you measure it, it isn’t the worst in the history of the world. Indianapolis and Cleveland are worse. Some of it might be bad book keeping. Somebody moves out of town and then DPS fails to take them off the books, so that kid gets marked as a dropout.

The education system is not great, but don’t believe ALL the hype as far as these rates are concerned.

Then real estate just got that much more expensive. Does anyone want to go in on a dilapidated building and hold it for a couple years? Im willing to empty my Roth if a move is imminent. Detroit will never be what it was. but I do see it improving. Dan Gilbert is moving back downtown, that is huge! add Illitch and the owner of the Lions… the dominoes guy? and you have a pretty decent consortium down there. If I remember correctly Dan Gilbert mentioned partnerships and secret handshakes having to do with his move back into the city. wonder if this has anything to do with it. Seriously though Downtown Detroit can be the biggest entertainment mecca this side of Chicago. and that is pretty good. considering our foundation of casinos, museums and Art institutes. all with St. Andrews hall being the crown jewell.

correction: the Fords.

Dont know how commited they are about investing into anything outside of Dearborn. but Tom Monaghan Is one of the few Billionaires who just announced plans to give away half of their fortune. You’ve gotta think that Detroit will factor into his charitable aspirations in some way.

This is my fault for starting this pseudo-political debate.

This makes Jonas sad.

Great picture of Jonas.

He looks like Street Fighter character design art.

I don’t want add player does not have blue collar mentality,
even if he is great player. Piston should not quit your job. - OK from J

He sort of looks like a mix between Guile and Ken. This is interesting, because Guile’s hair isn’t as cool as Jonas’s and Ken is often denigrated as the American Ryu. This is wrong. Ryu is the Japanese Jonas.
