Pistons Preseason Practice Lineups

[Ed note: Interesting stuff, bumping to the front -- MW]

After the first practice of the Pre Season Keith Langlois guesses on what the current team hierarchy is...

Based on what color practice jersey players were wearing when reporters were allowed in to see what was left of practice – a few shooting drills – it appears the Pistons lined up in these five-man units:

Rodney Stuckey, Rip Hamilton, Ben Wallace, Jonas Jerebko and Tayshaun Prince on the white team;

Tracy McGrady, Charlie Villanueva, Jason Maxiell, Will Bynum and presumably Ben Gordon on the blue team – Gordon had peeled off his practice jersey and was wearing only a gray T-shirt;

and Terrico White, Austin Daye, Greg Monroe, Chris Wilcox and DaJuan Summers on the red team.

Ike Diogu had on a white jersey, perhaps indicating he’ll be splitting time with Ben Wallace to allow Kuester to give Wallace, 36, a reduced workload in camp while also getting a good look at Diogu.

Star-divide

So thats:

Rodney / Rip / Tayshaun / Jonas / Big Ben - White Team

Willy B / Bengo / T - Mac / Charlie / J Max - Blue Team

Terrico / Austin / Dajuan / Wilcox / Monroe - Red Team

PG / SG / SF / PF / C

My initial thoughts:

I guess they are either really serious about having Terrico White play point guard.  Then again, when Vernon Hamilton comes maybe he will play point, and then Daye, White and Summers will lose some minutes.

My guess is that this is the probably the starting line up for the season.  If the emphasis is on defense, like they repeatedly claim, I can't see any one on the Red Team playing worse defense than anyone on the white team.  One exception maybe that Jerebko and CV will get swapped. I know that JJ is a better defender than CV, but CV might move up just because he might appear to be a better defender.  It looks like he will be guarding JJ and Wilcox, and might not really be tested on defense, meanwhile he will probably going HARD on offense and making the others look bad.  TMac may get up there too, but he just sounds like he is going to be nervous about his knee for a while.

Monroe on the third team is disappointing, especially since we know he has been in Auburn Hills for most of the last month or so.  If they saw him making an immediate impact you'd think he would have jumped over Maxiell already.  Perhaps, like summer league, it will talk longer than one might hope for the Moose to break loose.

It's the very first practice

Kue had to start somewhere. I don’t know how you can start with anything other than the starting line up from last year. Things can change…

Things can change...

And likely will. Not necessarily in the starting lineup, but in playing time. So what if Rip and Tay start. We’ve found out Rip pouts when he’s not starting and I don’t think Q will even attempt to touch that issue especially when he knows he’s got a consummate pro in Ben Gordon – who prefers to start, but won’t bi$%h and moan if he doesn’t.

I think McGrady’s level of play will be most interesting. If he even comes close to the McGrady of 07-08 in Houston, he’ll push Tay to finish games. Gordon will push Rip to close out games. Bynum may even push Stuckey to close out game and I’m sure CV will push Jonas to close out games.

I know its cliche, but its really not about who starts – its about who finishes. Quester has so many options at his choosing, I expect him to lose some sleep over it.

You can't reap the reward if you don't first take the risk.

i think rips kind of a bitch

but i was so happy for him when he came back to the starting role and was awesome for that stretch. he showed up AI big time.

Yeah I'd say its more likely that 2nd/3rd teams are set up the way they are

to maximize Monroe’s exposure to good defenders. If you put him alongside Maxiell or Wallace then you have him going against Wilcox, Jerebko, or CV. Honestly, I wouldn’t reach too much into the first day’s lineups and I also wouldn’t be surprised to see these lineups change multiple times this week.

As for CV and Rodney, two of the big conditioning question marks, CV didn’t look noticeably more toned than he did last year but the only areas I could see in the couple of media day videos were his shoulders/arms. My guess is Kander doesn’t have him on a beach work out doing bicep curls and I’d defer to BT on him.

Also haven’t seen anything about what Stuckey ultimately weighed in at. I’m guessing he at most lost 5-7 lbs…but I guess at 6’5" going from 205 to just under 200 could have an impact on explosiveness, etc.

Okay Rodney – fess up :) How much weight did you lose!!
Stuckey: “Lost 10 pounds. Down to 207 and I feel good.”

This puts him a roughly the same weight he came into the league at. Although, I’d think more of that weight is muscle than it used to be. It does seem like he lost some explosiveness last year, so hopefully this helps.

Don’t worry about Monroe being on the 3rd team right now. I don’t think they are in any rush to get him on the court like Joe D mistakenly was with Stuckey (it stunted his development, I think). Monroe will be eased into minutes. Unless Tayshaun is traded, though, I don’t see him starting this season. And even then, I get the feeling Q will go with T-Mac at the 3 instead of moving Jerebko down. Monroe will be the third man off the bench for most of the season, I think (Gordon-Tmac-Monroe-Bynum).

But, then again, this is training camp and they’ve already gotten plenty of looks at Monroe over the last 4 months. Maybe they want to get a better look at CV and Maxiell to see if they do better than last year more than seeing more of Monroe.

I'm annoyed

It just makes infinately more sense, to me anyway, to pair Bynum with Rip and Stuckey with Gordon.

Alas, I don’t see it happening.

by waulie on Sep 29, 2010 12:39 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed, but ...

I think Gordon has to beat Rip out for the starting job, just as Bynum would have to beat out Stuckey. I guess it’s also a question of does a Stuckey-Gordon pairing mean Stuck guards the 2s and Gordon the point guards?

Rec’d for emerging DBB meme.

Watching these teams go at each other

If it really is as competitive as Chuck’s twitter account makes it out to be, would give me a raging DBBB. The extra B is for BBoner. That extra B is a typo.

But, seriously, it’s as awesome as a regular Pistons game only BOTH SIDES ARE PISTONS. I wouldn’t know where to look or who to cheer for, so I would just cheer for everyone and the extra excitement would collect in my aforementioned DBBB.

They should just send out Roundball 3 to pick all us transplants up and take us to open practice

I’d throw donw $50 to the first man who throws down over Max or Ben.

Q is mister safe

but i hope when things shake up he will change things up..besides the glaring need to ship someone, being Rip or taye out. i love what those dues have done but f loyalty, send them to another team that needs them more than we do.

I smell a troll
