Desperation Big - *with POLL*

I went to the Pistons open practice

Our guard situation is clogged, but sufficient.

Our small forward situation is ok.

Our big situation is depressing.

Optimally, AD is a 2 and Jerebko is a 3. CV is a3 point shooter, a 5th big. Voskuhl is ?, Maxiell is 6:7, Wallace is 37.

What do the Pistons do?

Eddy Curry? http://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/2011/10/eddy-curry-reportedly-in-excellent-shape/

I hear he's in shape, definitely has skills. Could he be another career refreshing for the Pistons (Wallace, Wallace, Billups, McDyess, McGrady)

Samuel Dalembert? Would rather be with a contender... highly unlikely, plus expensive.

Kris Humphries - not a 5, a 4 that rebounds. not a solution. He'd be recreating what we already have with Jerebko/Monroe... not the post defense.

Do Nothing - and potentially be the worst team in the league, maybe acquiring Andre Drummond

Trade Stuckey and/or other assets for a big

Alternately, tank, but I think it’s too soon to say Drummond is the best choice (definitely a big though unless we get one via trade).

Anybody can happen!

Kris Humphries

Yes, he’s not a C, and yes, he is not a shot blocker.

But he was a double double machine last year who plays nasty. There’s always, always room for a guy like that on my team.

For some context, part of the reason I’ve been so surly about this offseason’s moves is because a guy like him is available. I’d give him either one of the two big contracts we gave away this summer, and I’d be happy about it.

This, exactly. I don’t care if a guy is undersized or whatever as long as he can perform. And Humphries did just that last year and I’m pretty sure he can do it again. Plus, Detroit is like Minnesota, isn’t it? They’re both cold, there’s some hockey….

by garrettelliott on Dec 19, 2011 8:25 PM EST up reply actions

Detroit has a fanbase though

I think he wants away from all attention right now. Kinda ironic when you think about it though, here would actually be one of the few places that would revere him for being a run of the mill, scrappy guy

Since we just spent $50+ million on more of the same

we can forget about Dalembert.

Personally, if I had known Dalembert would have gone this long, I would have offered up to $7.5M/yr for 4 years, then signed Reggie Williams to $3M over 2 years. Let Tayshaun walk and Stuckey take the qualifying offer.

Dalembert and Monroe are a perfect pairing, one of the best case scenarios we could have hoped for this summer. Also, Jared Sullinger would fit in brilliantly with that rotation. Start Monroe and Sullinger, then bring in Dalembert as first big off the bench, or start him when the team needs his D in the starting lineup.

As for the draft, Drummond hasn’t been very inspiring this season, he’s looking more like a DeAndre Jordan prospect. Jared Sullinger’s injury is reason for brief pause, but even with that I’d rank him above Drummond.

by Mike Payne on Dec 19, 2011 4:52 PM EST reply actions

That might be a good thing

Jordan fell from a lottery pick to late second round a few weeks going into the draft for a variety of reasons, perhaps we could get Drummond with an early second if he has a truly mediocre season. Small sample size, but so far Jordan averaged more rebounds and scored more efficiently, but Drummond is a better shot blocker. Neither was an exceptional rebounder in college (Cole Aldrich of all people averaged a good 3 boards more per 40)

Without a doubt, squats are a cure for everything.

by bearded thundar on Dec 19, 2011 7:03 PM EST up reply actions

Aldrich! DO IT JOD!

Talk about a buy low! And he was born in Boournsville, Minnesota! That’s a good sign!

by Shinons* on Dec 19, 2011 9:29 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Aldrich has a few years left on contract

But frankly I wouldn’t mind making a play at him if the team declines their option on him for 13-14 (doesn’t seem to be much room in their rotation for him as is). If they aren’t willing to pay him $3 million then we might be able to get him for very cheap

Without a doubt, squats are a cure for everything.

by bearded thundar on Dec 19, 2011 10:25 PM EST up reply actions

That Reggie Williams signing still frustrates me. Especially if they’re giving Stuckey more time at the two.

by TDP on Dec 19, 2011 11:46 PM EST up reply actions

fully 1000000% fucking agreed

and he signed for $5M for 2 years. Like we couldn’t beat that?

by Mike Payne on Dec 20, 2011 12:02 AM EST up reply actions

why does every assume it was purely about the money

There’s a chance that we did beat it (using the MLE) but he said hell to the no after finding out Joe was going to give Stuckey a big deal. Frankly I wouldn’t blame him, there’s really no room in the rotation for him now

Without a doubt, squats are a cure for everything.

Just to let you know...

Eddy Curry is on my Heat (unfortunately) and we seem very committed to him (again, unfortunately)…

Sorry, but the Heat aren’t getting a whole lot of sympathy from me. I find it rather comical, to be perfectly honest.

I mean this in a friendly jab sort of way, just so you know.

Is it true?

Was he really unable to make it through the second practice?

How about Hamed Haddadi?

He seems to do pretty well in international play and just ended up buried on the bench in Memphis behind an emerging Marc Gasol and ZBo. He’s 26, a legit 7 footer, blocks, rebounds, and is probably worth a look, no?

by JoeDip on Dec 20, 2011 1:19 PM EST reply actions

Memphis might be trading for Speights too.

by TDP on Dec 20, 2011 1:32 PM EST up reply actions

I don't remember if I posted this or not

but I was thinking about Haddadi a while back, and how it might be a wise business decision for Gores. The metro area’s large arabic population might find new pride in a team featuring Haddadi. Jonas brought Swedes to the Palace that may not have attended otherwise, and Detroit isn’t know for its Swedish population.

by Mike Payne on Dec 20, 2011 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

I thought about that too

but he’s Iranian. I know a lot of Chaldeans, Indians, Pakis, Turks, and just about everything else around Iran, except Iranians. I just don’t know that many of them in the area.

by JoeDip on Dec 21, 2011 12:50 AM EST up reply actions

Haddadi Is Iranian

and there’s a big difference between Arabs and Persians culturally.

This is DBB, and this is what we do.

by V. on Dec 21, 2011 4:08 AM EST up reply actions

Persians account for 61% of the Iranian population. The southwestern parts of Iran, including Haddadi’s home city of Ahvaz, are predominantly Arabic.

Who is Persian. Because culturally, there is a big difference, but maybe it’s the Shia/Sunni thing.

by V. on Dec 21, 2011 7:16 PM EST up reply actions

culturally, there is a big difference

There is a big difference, which I’m sure your business partner (and wikipedia!) will confirm.

by Mike Payne on Dec 21, 2011 8:03 PM EST up reply actions

Is your business partner’s name… Maque Al-Atta Munni?

Hey-oh!

by TDP on Dec 23, 2011 9:20 PM EST up reply actions

It goes beyond than just Sunni vs Shia

Iran and Iraq especially have been fighting over for control of that area for years. Though in all reality they are somewhat united now because of the US involvement with Israel

Without a doubt, squats are a cure for everything.

A guy with 4 "Ds" in his name, including 3 in the last name alone

Has to play good “D,” right? I mean, I figure it was a similar analysis re offense that got us Olrando Woolridge many years ago.

The important thing is that Mason can call him 'Lodi Dodi Haddadi'

He likes to party, don’t cause trouble, but dunks on everybody

looks like he plans on re-signing with Memphis even though they're rescinding their QO of $2M

he’ll be re-signed for $1.2-$1.5M. I say, offer Haddadi the original $2M and talk up the middle eastern culture in the Detroit Area…should be enough to get him over to Detroit.

I think for this team...

anybody who doesn’t generally have the word “guard” or “small” generally associated with their position is an upgrade for this team and doesn’t qualify as a desperation.

what about a Centre who can GUARD SMALL bigs?

He was named Eurobasket’s Player of the Year for the Baltic League and just signed with the Ukrainian Champions. That said, FUCK YOU EUROBASKET! Seriously, I have to pa $0.34/day just to see basic stats? What the fuck is that bullshit? Does anyone know of another website that has stats for euroleagues?

I Posted This Elsewhere

NO signed Gustavo Ayon yesterday.

http://www.atthehive.com/2011/12/24/2659072/dell-demps-signs-gustavo-ayon-and-what-it-means

I’m a little surprised we didn’t make a move on him. If Tony Ronzone were still around, I’m sure we would have. Judging from his metrics, NO got a steal here.

This is DBB, and this is what we do.
