Why won’t Pistons announcers use Monroe’s nickname, Moose?

John (Westland, Mich.): Why won’t Pistons announcers use Monroe’s nickname, Moose? The fans are using it? Langlois: Pistons coaches and his teammates use it, John, but I haven’t sensed much enthusiasm for "Moose" among fans. The acquisition of a nickname is usually an organic process – it has to happen on its own. And sometimes, the nickname a player comes to be known by in public is different than what he’s known by in the smaller circles of his friends or teammates. Magic Johnson’s teammates didn’t call him Magic, for instance, at least not when they were in their world. To the Lakers of the ’80s, he was Buck. I’m not sure any nickname will ever catch on with Monroe. He just doesn’t seem like a nickname kind of guy. Pistons Mailbag - Thursday, February 10, 2011
