An analysis of DeMarcus Cousins and (in)efficiency.
At first glance, it does appear rather bleak. Cousins is currently posting one of the least efficient seasons in the history of 20-year-olds in the NBA. His PER has been artificially held afloat by his high shots per minute figures and rebounding, but there’s really no way around the fact that Cousins has been one of the worst players in basketball this season....Ultimately though, such criticisms miss the bigger picture.

Indeed
Ultimately though, such criticisms miss the bigger picture.
That he’s the most likely current NBA player to go Latrell Sprewell and choke a coach? That he could easily eat his way off the NBA team in the off-season or during the lockout next year?
What bigger picture are we talking about here?

All these stat guys have some crazy views
Curry better then Rose, Kobe and Melo being just above average, Gasol top 5 etc…

Curry is WAY better than Rose!
Or at least was. Back in the day no one was better than Michael Curry!

Melo IS just above-average
He’s a one-on-one volume scorer who kills ball movement and has little to no interest in playing defense (a la Iverson). If Melo was anywhere NEAR as good as people think he is, the Nuggets wouldn’t be a better team without him, and NY wouldn’t be as mediocre as they are.
How's that for a slice of fried gold?

Melo is a little bitch.
There I said it. And I’ll say it again. Melo is a little bitch with a little bitch mustache. He cheap shots Stuckey earlier this season injuring Stuck for at least a few games (5-10). Then when he comes to the Palace the next time, Stuck fuckin’ manhandles him on defense and all he can do is bitch bitch bitch. Once the game is over, just like the little bitch he is, he bitches out on being interviewed because of what he’s afraid he might say about the refs. Scared like the little bitch that he is. I don’t know about you, but if I just signed a ridiculous contract extension to go with all the endorsements I’m gonna get in NYC, I don’t think I’d give two shits about the $25,000 fine they’d lay on me for lettin’ the refs know what I think. But then again, I’m not the little bitch. Melo is.

My wife told me about a friend
who rode up an elevator with Melo. It was just her, her brother, and Melo in the elevator, and Melo stood with his nose in the corner facing away from them and his head toward the floor so that no one could talk to him.
Now is that something a little bitch would do?
It's gonna take a lot of fireworks to clean this place up.
Actuallly, I Prefer "Knucklehead"
Terry Foster ripped him pretty good today in the News.
Like I’ve said a zillion times, Melo is this generation’s AI. Like AI, Melo is too selfish and not talented enough (especially in comparison to AI) to ever be able to play for a ring.
The NY media must be continually blowing themselves over and over again over the trade. Yes, they need time to play together, and CB will help them, but Melo and Amare aren’t exactly what you call complimentary players.
Personally, it’s just a matter of time before things blow up between Melo and Amare; compared to Miami where there’s merely a decent chance of the same happening between LeBron and Wade (though Bosh may go first).

Hes a dynamic scorer
And a very good rebounder, not just above average but a top 10 SF. But hes not a superstar like most think

He's a dynamic little bitch is what he is.
And he’s not a particularly good rebounder either for his position. Looking at per 36 numbers, it took me about 5 minutes to find numerous SFs with significantly better rebounding numbers including Kevin Durant who I’d argue is an even more dynamic scorer than Melo:
Career per 36 Rebounding:
Melo – 4.3
Tayshaun – 5.1
Andre – 5.5
Lebron – 6.2
Caron Butler – 5.9
AK47 – 6.6
Kevin Durant – 6.0

Career numbers?
Melo is beasting on the boards this year

6.0 per 36 is not beasting.

He's not a dynamic scorer at all
He just shoots a lot, and he’s just good enough to make those shots at a below average rate for his position.
Melo is fool’s gold.
Here’s a nice little scenario.
What if the Knicks weren’t a bunch of moronic children putting a T-Rex head on a Spiderman body, to speak action figure terms, and went for Andre Igoudala instead? Sure, the T-Rex head on the Spiderman body looks cool, but can Spiderman stand up after that? On the other hand, Iggy would have been like putting a Batman head on a Spiderman body. And that my friends is a dangerous combination. And yes, I just woke up.

So I posted in that thread because someone tried to state that there wasn't anyone else in the draft not named John Wall that a team would want over Cousins...
Monroe wasn’t included in the original data set because he didn’t have 500 field goals (he will by the end of the season based on his current 451, with 6.6 per game and 12 games left) but I brought up that Monroe would be up and to the left or the exact opposite of DeMarcus Cousins as far as offensive rating and usage goes. The author was nice enough to re-do the chart with Moose included and also mentioned that he plans on doing a piece specifically on Monroe. Here’s the chart in case anyone is interested:

The numbers next to the player's heads are win totals for the year.

So wait…..
Greg Monroe adds more wins than Kevin Love. FUCK YEAH KIDS.

Joe D didn't draft Monroe. Monroe drafted JoD.
Really though, Monroe was the BPA. It wasn’t exactly a hard decision on JoD’s part. But yes, since JoD is “in charge” of the Pistons, he gets credit for calling Greg’s name.

The usage-efficiency discussion is a central one to basketball analytics; put extremely simply, efficiency drops off as usage increases for the average player.
Sigh. While this is true for some players, such as Ariza, this isn’t as true as the author makes it out to be. Yes, you can find individuals who fit this theory, but you can find more examples of players who do not (how about the Nuggets without Melo? Take away their highest usage player, and the team starts scoring more efficiently).
But what irks me about this generally, is that he feels no need to offer any proof of what is a very significant point in his argument.
