It seems the general response on DBB to this year's draft is pretty negative. And that's fine. I'm not here to change anyone's mind. I just wanted there to be a post out there from the point of view of someone who's happy with the Knight pick but doesn't need to resort to message board homo-calling.
I know that statistically Knight rates around the middle of the pack of collegiate point guards, and that Berri's metrics seem particularly down on him, but let's remember that Berri's metrics also ranked Greg Monroe 20th in last year's draft, behind players like Jeremy Lin and Luke Babbitt, and predicted Damion James (!) to lead the draft class.
When we're talking about players this young (and Knight is, I believe, the youngest player in this year's draft), it's important to consider not just what they've done up until this point, but also what they might become and how likely they are to reach their ceiling. By all accounts, Knight's a great kid with an outstanding work ethic and a high basketball IQ. Personally, I have faith that he'll steadily improve, and while it may take some patience, a few years down the line he'll be a very good point guard.
Hopefully this post won't be used to ridicule me in 5 years. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to find some movie posters of that lousy Tom Cruise movie "Knight and Day" to start photo-shopping.
