Tom Gores hires Dave Checketts as consultant
Former New York Knicks president Dave Checketts is serving as a basketball consultant to new Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores, according to sources close to the situation.
The news of Checketts' involvement coincides with former Knicks great Patrick Ewing's emergence late last week as a candidate for the Pistons' coaching vacancy.
Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars continues to serve as Detroit's lead basketball decision-maker, with Gores announcing when he officially took control of the franchise earlier this month that "we're going to lean on [Dumars] pretty heavily."
Yet sources said that Gores is also taking a level of input from Checketts, who headed up New York's management structure when the Knicks were built around Ewing.

yeah...I think this goes deeper than simply having a guy on retainer that has built a franchise before...
Madison Square Gardens is a premier venue regardless of the NBA team playing there and Checketts likely played a huge part in that during a time period when revenue via concerts and live entertainment more or less ’sploded.
Here’s hoping he hires Dave Berri as a stats consultant.

Dave Berri does not take the value of squats into his formulas. Ergo, I do not trust his metrics

vis-a-vis, trusting his metrics is ill-advised due to the lack of squattin'

I can’t put into words how happy this makes me, so I will not really bother to try. I’ll only say that I’m elated that Gores isn’t blindly trusting Dumars.
As long as he keeps his hands off the logo
(Checkett founded SCP Worldwide, owners of the American Hockey League’s Peoria Rivermen. See below.)

That Riverman looks strangely similar to American Dad.

I read a few bios of Checketts this morning when the news broke
and I assume that has more to do with the operational and entertainment aspects of running PSE than it does personnel decisions. With MSG, Checketts also runs Radio City Music Hall and other entertainment/sports properties. I have a feeling this will be more of a learning scenario for Platinum Equity’s management of the Palace, DTE, etc. than it will be a second check and balance on Dumars. Sure, this may change the way Gores handles Dumars, but I don’t think that’s a central or even secondary reason for consulting with Checketts.

JoD signed BG and CV's contracts at the end of the day
So even if the guy doesn’t have much personnel experience, I’m still glad we have a good financial guy around now

Here's how I see it:
If this guy helps bring in more money with the Palace, then maybe Gores will be willing to spend more money on the team?

Also, during a game against Seattle
Checketts was overheard on the sideline yelling to Olden Polynice: “Hey, Olden, you’re leading the league in stolen VCR’s!”

what's the history behind that?
Was Checketts just drunk or did OP get in trouble for lifting somebody’s VCR?
Olden admitted to stealing a walkman when he was in college, which inspired Checkett’s taunt. The press reported the incident, and someone (I believe the Sonics’ coach) called the comment “borderline racist”.

Checketts also hollered, “Here comes the outlaw. Hey, outlaw!” to guard Kevin Williams.
Not sure what that one’s about. Either he took it upon himself to taunt a guy who played five seasons in the NBA and averaged 11.3 minutes per game, or else he was actually referring to Miles Dabord, formerly Kevin Williams, older brother and accused murderer of Bison Dele. I doubt it, though, because Miles Dabord was not a guard.

(I’m sure there’s more if you sign up for this reliable source as a “free trial.” Or if you go to the library and flip through old microfiche of the Chicago Sun-Times.)

Is it possible to tack on 5 wins to our overall for every extra head coach we have on staff?
If so…I’m down!

Man,
I’d love to have Patrick Ewing around for Greg Monroe, but I would hate to have Patrick Ewing around to do anything regarding coaching a team.

I know his name is Dave Checketts
But I keep reading it as: “Dave, Check-etts”

Every time I think of Beastie Boys I think of the fact that Paul’s Boutique is one of a kind. I just heard this on the radio a few months ago that there will never be another album made that uses so many different samples because they changed the law a few years after it came out to prevent artists from using samples without getting permission (or paying for rights or whatever). Neat piece of music history.
Oh, and I also think of Sabotage.
