Ben Gordon On The NBA Lockout

The NBA might still be locked out, but I just found my posting keys, so I'll share this little Q&A Ben Gordon had with Jonathan Abrams over at Bill Simmons' Grantland and break down every single Ben Gordon answer like one of his missed jumpers because we don't have missed jumpers to break down [tears].

Grantland: How has the lockout changed your typical offseason and preparing for the season?

Gordon: "It’s just been typical so far. The lockout hasn’t extended into the season as of yet. I think I’m going to prepare the same exact way as I would the last couple of months leading into any season. If the lockout is extended and we start to miss preseason time, then I’ll start to consider maybe tapering back a little. Or maybe not. Maybe, I’ll continue to work and take my rest as needed."

It's good to see that Ben Gordon doesn't feel like he needs to change his approach from the last two offseasons. Like most people, Gordon also has no clue what he's going to do once this lockout pushes into the regular season. And it will.

Star-divide

Grantland: You were pretty close to playing for Great Britain’s national team this summer. What happened?

Gordon: "There is always next summer when the Olympics are in London. I really had my mind set that I would play this summer, but with the birth of my first son, to me, it wasn’t best suited for my family and I didn’t want to rush the situation and have it be an inconvenience. It would probably be smart to wait until next year. On top of that, all the stuff that’s going on with the lockout, there were too many bad signs so I didn’t want to force it and end up regretting it. When the NBA announced the lockout, they sent a letter out that said staff members form the team are not allowed to have contact, et cetera, et cetera. Number nine on the letter pretty much says any serious injury you might acquire while the lockout is going on can void your contract. So right now, my risk tolerance is pretty low. There’s no need to put myself in that type of risk right now. It’s not like the Olympics are this summer. I just pretty much weighed my options until the very last minute and then just went with my gut feeling. With my son, traveling certain countries at this young age, I didn’t want to put him through that right now."

If large paragraphs scare you, I've added emphasis. And now I'll let someone else say what we all may be thinking...

Grantland: So, if games are missed in the NBA, you’re not willing to risk your contract by playing overseas?

Gordon: "It’s kind of hard to say right now. I’ve never not played basketball for a year straight. I definitely can’t see that happening. The likelihood of me playing overseas, I really don’t know. There’s a lot to consider, the market, the teams that are looking for someone like me. I just don’t know. It’s far out."

Nobody ever got better by sitting on their hands, unless you're going to play the stranger. Seriously, go play.

Grantland: You were a player representative with Chicago. How do the players view Billy Hunter, the executive director of the players association?

Gordon
: "Judging from what he did with the last lockout, it seemed like the players were happy. I understand this negotiation is completely different. One thing I do know about Billy Hunter is he fights for the players. I feel like that’s exactly with what he’s doing right now. It seems like right now, the league is just saying 'take it or leave it.' I think you have to take a stance. At the end of the day, the owners have a lot at stake and so do the players. You have to stand and fight or take a deal you don’t want to take. That’s not something the players are willing to do."

In other words, hands are being sat on. Outlook does not look good. [tears still streaming]

Grantland: How will players stay together in this, especially once paychecks will start being missed?

Gordon: "I think if you look and pay attention to the media, it seems like guys around the league are pretty unified. The things guys are saying and the overall vibe I’m getting is everybody is united and they want to stand up for themselves and rightfully so. That’s great. It’s going to take that, especially if the owners are willing to impose a lengthy lockout. Not just now, but when the paychecks stop coming in. I think right now, it’s a lockout and it’s a little surreal. Once both sides start to lose games, you’ll start to see what both sides are made of."

"Once both sides start to lose games ... " [more tears]

Grantland: When did you start preparing for the lockout?

Gordon: "I started preparing more so once I got my contract with the Pistons. I was able to save a lot of cash. I’ve always been good about saving my money. But the last two years, I’ve put aside a lot more because I knew what was coming up."

Welp, I'm officially financially depressed. Ben Gordon made roughly $22 million in his five seasons with the Bulls and has almost equaled that total in his two years with the Pistons. I'm so happy his new baby will have clean clothes and not have to sleep in a dresser drawer.

Grantland: You obviously haven’t been able to talk to your new coach, Lawrence Frank, but what is your impression of him?

Gordon: "I have a lot of game experience playing against him when he coached the Nets and was a Boston assistant. He always seems to be very, very prepared, very meticulous and has an astute attention to detail. That may sound cliché for a head coach at this level. But I think it’s very important to know what your guys can do, putting them in the best situation possible. I think he’s very capable of that. He’s very defensive minded and that’s something our team lacked a lot last year. I’m looking forward once this stuff is sorted out to learning from him."

I don't think Gordon can talk about Frank at all, like Frank can't talk about his players, but I could be wrong. If I'm not wrong, I hope Stern's fine doesn't break Gordon's penurious piggy bank.

Grantland: Last year was a tough year for the Pistons and the bottom hit with reports of players boycotting a shoot-around in protest of the former coach John Kuester. What’s the backstory behind that situation?

Gordon: "Last year, everything that possibly could have went wrong, went wrong. We had a lot of talent. There were a lot of issues in the front office, on the floor, with coaches, with players. It was just a mess. People from the outside looking in don’t realize how bad it was. It wasn’t conducive for playing basketball at a high level and it showed. It was pretty much what everybody saw. Some guys showed up to play. Some guys didn’t show up to play. Whatever point people were trying to prove by showing up or nothing showing up, those points were taken. Six guys showed up. Six guys played and a few other guys decided not to play that night. That was one of the uglier moments during the season. Moving forward, I don’t see that happening anymore. That was probably one of the lowest basketball moments I’ve ever been a part of. Because we’re all a team and we all shared that negative light. Regardless of who played that night, it was bad. But moving forward, I think the emphasis will be much different."

There's a lot here, including the emphasis I've added. We (the 'people from the outside looking in') were let on to believe that it was all blown out of proportion by the damn media, although I don't think anybody actually believed that. Gordon is saying it was actually worse (before he contradicts himself and says "it was pretty much what everybody saw").

Greg Monroe played at a pretty high level, and he showed up to play every night (at least in 2011 after he got the rookie hiccups out of the way). In situations like last year, you can man up, or you can make excuses.

I have my opinions about which type of basketball player Ben Gordon is.

I thought Ben Gordon was one of the quiet, hard-working guys?

by garrettelliott on Aug 17, 2011 10:09 AM EDT up reply actions

That’s always been my impression. He seems to handle himself professionally, particularly when compared to certain other guards. Gordon’s problem is just that he’s overpaid, but he works hard. I can’t blame him for accepting Dumars’ excessive offer.

by Birdman84 on Aug 17, 2011 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions

I thought that, too

Until this season. He was so mopey and now passive aggressive.

I’d rather hear him say something like, “Yeah, things were rough last season, but I should have played better…”

Monroe was probably my favorite guy of the season in terms of how he publicly handled the adversity. The vets could learn a lot from the kid, I think. Dude played like a beast and had a great attitude, even when he got yanked inexplicably. More of that, please.

Sounds like BG needs to stop having interviews with media lackeys and starting having a long hard talk with the man in the mirror.

See, I always disagreed with this. I never got a passive-aggressive feel from Gordon. What I do fault Gordon with is not being assertive enough. And I feel those are two different things. One is an intentional action, whereas the other is probably just a reflection of his personality (not a natural leader, etc). Honestly, the latter is actually more scary because it means he was OK with the situation whereas the former is at least a negative response to a bad situation. I’d rather he look at the situation and go “yeah, this is awful” than “nope, don’t see anything wrong with this.”

Yeah, I don’t have a problem with people disagreeing with me on this one at all. It’s purely subjective epinion, and I could be totally and completely wrong.

by brgulker on Aug 18, 2011 9:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I know what you're talking about.

It’s really hard to read a person based on just watching their actions over the course of a 48 minute game. You can easily judge the performance.

Though projecting is never a particularly good idea (I will admit I am doing it myself) because it can often form mistaken opinions. Like if you walk by a guy that looks like one of the Lonely Island boys from “The Creep” and think “Dude has got to be a pedophile or something” never to realize he’s actually happily married with two kids and spends time working at a homeless shelter while donating thousands to charity or something.

I kinda try to judge just the player aspect nowadays and leave the human being part out unless there’s clear evidence that the attitude part is interfering with the player part (like Prince).

Packey as I understand it players are free to say and do as they want without the league interfering.

Because of the lockout the league holds no power over them. Hence why they have done nothing about Beasley drug troubles.

touche, thank you.

I just wanted to believe he shouldn’t have been talking about his coach because then I could make a comment about how much money he makes/MUST save/could lose in a fine. You make better sense, though

Intersting

The part about the Olympics next year got my attention.

What if the lockout wipes out the entire season? If that’s the case and we get into February 2012 with no deal, what is the incentive to get the deal done before Summer 2012? If the lockout stretches that long players will be in a position where they will have to choose to take the risk of playing for their country with the possibility of an injury voiding their NBA contract.

That would add a whole new dynamic to the dialogue. Would player or owners be under more pressure at that point? Players would be under personal pressure to represent their country (if that’s important to them, as it obviously is for some), and owners would be under public scrutiny for putting players in a position where they may not be able to reasonably represent their country, even if they want to.

Well a lot of guys are already with the national teams

Villanueva, Hordford and Garcia for the Dominican Republic. Barea, Balkman and Arroyo (jijiji) for Puerto RIco, the Gasol brothers, Rubio and Ibaka for Spain, Manu is with the Argentinian team and so forth. The difference is that all those teams managed to get proper insurance for their guys, not so much Britain with Gordon.

I'm probably biased, but Gordon annoys me.

I’m not sure what I expected Ben Gordon to say, but I’m not really satisfied with any of his answers.

Maybe it’s his demeanor or his lack of performance or something completely different, but he just doesn’t come off as a likable guy to me.

a little off topic (and from a newbie)...

…but I thought it was interesting today when I went to palacelockerroomstore.com and noticed that not only are all jerseys 60% off, but Prince and Hamilton’s jerseys are each significantly more discounted and say ‘FINAL SALE.’ I realize the jerseys are from over a season ago, but I’m hoping this might be some hint into the front-office’s intentions post-lockout – thoughts? I realize I’m reaching, but a man can dream.
