Austin Daye delivers a fairly nondescript interview on Jim Rome Is Burning. Daye discusses how the lockout affects him personally and the NBA Finals.
Apologies for the smallish video, but I was more concerned about the audio quality.

I think this interviewer has no idea who Austin Daye is. He has nothing to talk with him about but the lockout and other general NBA stuff. I don’t even know if this interviewer knows anything about basketball except what ever his producers told him (e.g. lockout, the finals, lebron, etc.).
These questions could have been given to any nba player, or coach, or owner, or mascot, or cheerleader, or groupie.
Nice to hear that Daye is working out with Kobe.
Welcome... to the Wallace-hood
To be fair, it is not like a ton of people care about Daye, a young bench player from a crappy team. The interviewer is Jason Smith, who does the ESPN late night. I like Smith from listening to him when I had a job starting a 4am, although I pictured him differently.
Why wasn’t this sent from your roomate’s iPad while sitting on the toilet?

Boy, I was glad to hear him talk about LeBron. That was fun.
Dude doesn’t really seem like a Piston.
Most Pistons don’t really seem like Pistons these days.

On a different note, some Zeke-bashing over at Basketbawful
Some of it deserved, of course, but some of it not, IMHO.
I can see where he’s coming from. As a C’s fan, he’s not giving him the benefit of the doubt for what were some very stupid comments (even though I agree with you that ultimately, he had some good points).
The timing and context for what he said made it foolish because it made it so inflammatory. If you want to get a point across, don’t say it when and how he did. Say it a week after, when you’ve calmed down.
I think it’s more likely than not that Zeke knew he had a point, but he was also pissed off. Saying what he did gave an outlet for both. And I think C’s fans are perfectly justified in hating him.
"With logic he attacks. With statistics he defends."
Except I remember the timing differently
His more extended comments about racism in sports were a week or so later. As I remember it, he made the “yeah, Rodman’s right. . ..” comment right after the loss to the C’s, BUT his more extended quotes about racism in sports came from an interview done during the NBA finals.
As I tried to say on that thread, there is a lot to hate about Zeke. Hey, I still have a soft spot for Adrian Dantley, and didn’t really like Thomas’s role in that (although, I know, we did get the back-to-backs afterward). But the extended quotes on racism were really good, timely, and needed back then. And Zeke was a worse player than AI? Puh-leeze.
I think that’s fair. I only vaguely remember that. i was just a kid. But, can’t change what he said and when he said it. It was stupid, and of course it alienated a lot of people. Among the many reasons to hate the Bad Boys, that’s certainly one for a C’s fan.
And of course, Zeke > AI. I can’t believe anyone would think otherwise.
"With logic he attacks. With statistics he defends."
Except I'm still maintaining
That what he said during the interview in the finals about racism in how NBA players were perceived generally wasn’t stupid — in fact, it was courageous and correct.
I think Thomas is right about the subtle racism in the NBA. I think that is slowly changing, but especially growing up, I can recall specific examples and players that illustrate this. Jon Barry, as a white Pistons role player, was always crafty and smart, for example. Junkyard Dog was always the hustling, blue collar workhorse. Zeke’s got a legit point, no question.
I think Thomas is dead wrong about Larry Bird, though, and I question his claim that he was being entirely sarcastic. Bird was a beast. So was McHale. That those dudes happened to be white was just the chance of genetics. To say otherwise, even if sarcastically, honestly makes my blood boil … And why shouldn’t it? If there’s one issue where sarcasm doesn’t have a place, it’s certainly race (close second, gender and sexuality).
Flip the script — if a white dude like Bird had said something like, “Zeke is only as good as he is because he’s black and athletic…” What would have been the result? Certainly, a huge (and justified) backlash. The fact that Zeke’s in the minority group that has historically been the victim of racism doesn’t justify the reverse, right?
Even if Zeke’s points, which came out later, are correct (and I agree with you that they are), that doesn’t do anything to undermine the inflammatory nature of what he originally said, and I’m not going to hold it against anyone for being emotionally charged up about some incredibly emotionally charged statements.
Hell, I’ll just lay it out there — as an un-athletic white kid who was able to carve out a decent career without being incredibly gifted with genes, those comments piss me off to this day. I grew up idolizing Zeke, Rodman, Johnson, Dumars, Laimbeer. I used to pretend I was them in my driveway — and I was too young to even have a clue about racism. I didn’t care one way or another that he was black and that I was white … until he raised the issue the way he did. Growing up, hearing those clips replayed made me think he’d have something against me — a white kid trying to be like him.
It’s all ancient history, of course, but yeah, it still bugs me. So there’s full disclosure.
"With logic he attacks. With statistics he defends."
Whoa, Nelly
I agree that the statement, “If Bird were black, he would just be another player” is monumentally dumb. Bird was a great, elite player. One of the best of all time. I wasn’t for one moment defending that as a serious claim.
I still think, however, that when Thomas said, "Yeah, Rodman’s right. . . " he was either joking, trying to deflect from Rodman (who was a teammate and a rookie and obviously a loose cannon). Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe Zeke really seriously believed — at a time when the Bird-era Celtics were an incredibly dominant team, one that just beat the Pistons — that Bird really was just an average player. I wasn’t there and I have no special insight into Thomas’s thinking. But I find that hard to imagine.
I mean, if Thomas had said something like “if Bird and I were the same height, I would be better,” I would believe that Thomas actually meant that. But I can’t believe he meant that Bird really was just an average player.
