It's always fun to compare and contrast young talent vs. the stars of the past and present. Greg Monroe is an exciting example, having drawn a number of comparisons to Detroit-native Chris Webber over the last year. So how would a 21-year-old Chris Webber stack up against a 21-year-old Greg Monroe?

Get out your tissues and your lotion, and check back on this link throughout the year. Having seen how far Greg Monroe has come in a year and a half, it'll be fun to consider where he can go from here.

more masturbatory fun

According to John Hollinger’s PER, Greg Monroe is the best big man in the entire league right now.

PER is a shitty stat, though

Was that the year Webber played for Golden State?

If so, Moose is doing as well or better in most stats on a worse team.

That was Webber’s sophomore year, age-matched at 21, when he played for the Washington Bullets.

Thanks

Was that the year they had Webber and Juwan Howard? My wife and I referred to that team as “University of Michigan, DC campus.” More importantly, I love me some Moose.

While no one gives a rats ass for Hollinger

IF he can keep that PER up, hes going to get real national attention.

wow Moose has him beat across the board

I thought because of the athleticism desparity Webber would at least be significantly better in blocks or defensive rebounds, but Moose has him matched (even beat at rebounding). The thing I’m most impressed about is the fact that they have identical assist and turnover percentages but Moose has a lower usage% and a much higher TS%

Great post!

I was just thinking how Monroe was shaping up to be one of the league’s most productive centers. In the East, only Howard stands above him in my opinion. Certainly his performance against Bogut was outstanding, and he did pretty well against Howard, too. Gives us reason to be hopeful for our future!

by revken on Jan 14, 2012 4:22 PM EST reply actions

Yeah I don't think I would pick him above Howard just yet

But who knows what could happen in the future? Sheed was a great on ball defender even in his last years here and still could make the appropriate rotations to alter some shots despite his little remaining athleticism.

Without a doubt, squats are a cure for everything.

Howard vs. Monroe

They are very different players, obviously, but Monroe is showing a much more advanced offensive game than Howard ever has. I would not expect him to ever be Howard’s equal as a shotblocker or rebounder, but that doesn’t mean he can’t become a very good defender. As much as I loved Ben Wallace’s game, the value of shotblocking can be overrated. There was a lot more to his – and Rasheed’s – defensive value than blocking shots. Where Monroe looks like he can become really special is as an offensive player who scores efficiently and involves his teammates. If he becomes a quality defender, too, than he’ll be one of the league’s best. If he keeps playing like he has been, he deserves to be in the all-star game.

Let's give Monroe some credit already though...

Where it matters most based on his current played position, heading into the game against the Bobcats he was holding opposing centers to 11 of 33 shooting.

His defensive rating is 107 this season and while it’s not the insanely epic defense that Ben Wallace played, it is right in line with where Pau Gasol was at his age, better than Webber’s, and also in line with Al Jefferson throughout Al’s entire career.

The biggest difference is Greg is significantly more efficient in shooting than any of theses guys. Give Monroe a center that compliments him and I think we’ll see another side of Greg that most of us would never have thought existed.

Jonas Jerebko once killed a charging female rhinoceros in heat protecting its young with nothing more than a hook shot.

You can't really compare Drating directly

You need to look at how they compare to the average team Drating. For instance, the fact that Chandler’s Orating is over 40 points higher than Amares right now shows just much better he is playing than the rest of the team. But to compare Moose and Gasol etc directly means nothing because teammates play too large of an impact

I love me some Moose.

The stats are encouraging, but I’m going to wait a wee bit longer. If he is still kicking it after another month, I’m all in.

I'm off to point the pink pistol at the porcelain firing range.

I'm off a commy themed party tonight

If I run into Prokhorov, I’ll be sure to satisfy him with bread and vodka until he agrees to swap Dwill for the impeccable Rodney HEY! Stuckey and Charlie Bad-Ass Villanueva

Unfortunately no Prokhorov

But I did learn that I seriously need a better wingman!

The rubgy team threw this event. It was an exceptionally well done brofest, however most of the girls bitched out when we ran out of vodka and only had a keg
