Off-Topic Thread Week of 1/15: Snowball Smuggler
Figured we'd get one of these out there. Since I probably talk as much about non-basketball related topics as I do the Pistons, I figured I'd post something to get us started. Here is Willa after getting a chance to play in deeper snow (like 4 inches, which is enough to send people running to the grocery store and buying weeks of batteries and canned goods).
She and Mosa got a chance to romp at the park with a bunch of other dogs taking in the snow day. Mosa got his first catches of the frisbee post-eye removal and hasn't lost a step (just an eye).
Off-Topic Question of the Week: What is the last movie you saw, book you read, and/or game you played?

Snow? Sterling Heights has been devoid of it..
Movie: Taken with my all time favorite actor Liam Neeson, I cannot WAIT for The Grey to come out. Those wolves will regret kidnapping his daughter
Book: Deception Point by Dan Brown, I loved this book, great mystery and really intelligent. I read it awhile ago and it deserved a refresher. It’s old but i’d recommend anybody pick it up.
Game: Skyrim..duh
We didn't lose the games, we just ran out of time -- Bobby Layne
Unless you count
The reading of the Proslogium by Anselm I did for my philosophy class, it was only a few chapters but i’d hardly call it reading. More like observing words placed in a seemingly logical order and understanding their contents through wikipedia

Snow, eh?
I remember that stuff. Vaguely.
What is the last movie you saw, book you read, and/or game you played?
Movie: Foxes. Early 80’s teen angst film outlining the dangers of the drug scene in LA, older boyfriends, controlling parents, double dating and not enough sex. Jodie Foster plays the responsible one.
Book: Andrew Jackson: The Course of American Democracy, 1833-1845 (Volume 3). Yes, I read this stuff for fun.
Game: Saint’s Row the Third. This game is fun as hell.

i should have mentioned that any and all topics unrelated to basketball can go in here...
I just figured I would pose a question to get some dialogue going. And yeah Seattle got some snow. Last night we got freezing rain so I’m most likely stuck at the bottom of our hill for the 2nd straight day…

I'm looking into grad schools, I feel more lost now than when I hadn't.
I’ve never seen snow (in person) that’s hard to come by here in the tropic. A mall once had fake one, but I don’t think its nearly the same if you can’t drop to the floor and make a snow moose.

That’s crazy to me, as someone born and raised in Michigan. I love the snow. I’d miss it if I ever left this climate.

I couldn’t envision myself living in a place cold enough to have snow. My ideal temperature is somewhere between 80 and 85.

Here in Oz
I get the warm climate (between 17-35C all year.. Screw the Fahrenheit system!) but have been able to drive down to the snow fields a couple of times. I like going snowboarding but agree with MP that dealing with it day in day out would be a pain in the arse.

MFMP is right about how much shoveling sucks. I don’t mind as long as the wind isn’t blowing but today was brutal.

I love the snow. I’d miss it if I ever left this climate.
As someone who left Michigan to take a seasonal job down here in Florida, I totally agree with this. This is my first winter ever without snow and I am going crazy without it.
My federal building is way cooler than your federal building.
Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been a warm wired person. I hated the cold, and while snow is nice after it falls, I couldn’t stand the gray wastes that followed (and especially the shoveling). Moving to Florida (or elsewhere warm) was a dream since I was a kid, and I haven’t missed snow for a moment.
Those last two years in Iowa were especially brutal. Living on a corner lot at the bottom of the hill was always primed for 3’ snow drifts. That shit was just insulting. I doubt I’ll ever miss snow, but understand that I might be in the minority.
no man i wouldnt miss it either
i dont really mind the cold so much but i hate snow, specifically having to drive all over the unplowed streets in detroit.

They just drive up to Flagstaff ’round xmas times and fill the truck bed with snow and drive home. They shovel it out into the driveway and make some snowmen and then it just goes away. To recapitulate: 6 hour winter > 6 month winter

Movie: Red – I suggest if you are a media nerd like me, trying the Plesk App. All of my media is available when I travel so I just sign into my app from my computer or whatever device and watch movies. It pulls data about the movie from imdb.

Just finished the Hunger Games trilogy and actually really enjoyed it. I wasn’t expecting to like it at all.
With the PS3 I got for Christmas, I watch a lot of Netflix on my TV now, which is pretty much the greatest thing ever. I just watched an old Canadian film called Cube (which comes pretty highly regarded but I didn’t think it was anything spectacular). Before that I watched Gunnin’ For That #1 Spot (which I hadn’t seen before but enjoyed), Boyz N the Hood (which I had seen before but felt like re-watching), Exam (which I liked), and I’m watching Inside Job right now. I’m making up for years of not watching as many movies as I would have liked.
Last game played: the new Batman one, but it makes me nauseated after about 30 minutes of playing so I can only go in short spurts. :(

arkham city
also the last game i’ve played, and it might be one of the worst games i’ve ever played. visually i think it’s great, but functionally it’s so-so and it’s ridiculously repetitive. and the city is too compact and there’s too much going on. you’re listening to a phone ring, some dude talking, some other dude begging for help, i mean just shut up and let me get on with my mission.
before that though i played saints row and creed, both of which i’d definitely recommend. love good open-world game play.
Re: Arkham City
I couldn’t disagree with you more. It’s one of the best games I’ve ever played.

It was legitimately stressful to have so many things going on at once but not in a bad way, if that makes sense. Being Batman should be stressful.
I agree that the city felt a little too compact, but maybe we were expecting an actual city, rather than a small district. Compared to Spider-Man 2, one of my favorite games of all time, it felt cramped.
I still loved Arkham City, though. It was a great game. I loved the feel of the combat system with the gadgets. It was fun to find new ways to surprise and beat up random thugs.
Arkham City was my favorite game this year, even over skyrim. i just loved the shit out of it.

Are there any cool things you guys recommend I should be doing with my PS3? I’m thinking about getting the Uncharted games (hopefully they don’t make me puke, but I bet they will) and maybe the Lego Star Wars game because I’m a Star Wars nerd (and it probably won’t make me puke).

uncharted is pretty great
other than that i would say the assassins creed games, the first dragon age, mass effect 2, infamous and bioshock. i would say if you want to play some brutal fun that will have you cursing give demon souls a try.
supa dupe i had the same problems for awhile until i leveled the shit out of my archery and stealth skills. once i did that i could sneak through whole dungeons without being detected and pull off crazy one hit kills on most lower level enemies and maybe 4 or 5 arrows on higher level guys.
follow me on twitter: @danieldresden
yeah I'd read up on how to get the most out of your character
I went to the extremes, and now I’m paying for it in lack of a challenge. I’m playing on the top difficulty, but my smithing, enchanting, and alchemy skills are so high that I’m making insane weapons and armor that are pretty much impossible for me to be challenged with…
Its a ton of fun but I love owning people.

I used to get nauseous playing video games. Turned out to be my astigmatism and the fact that lazily hadn’t updated my prescription in a couple years. It’s basically motion sickness induced by the 3D environment. Get your eyes checked out before any more hardcore gaming or get some side-scrollers.
I have astigmatism! I just started wearing glasses for the first time in my life about 2 years ago. I’ve always had motion sickness though (I couldn’t even ride on swings when I was a kid) so it might be weird inner ear/fluid issues or something. I DO need to get my prescription updated though, so maybe that will help! Thanks!

BTW, I highly recommend it. Simmons discusses EVERYTHING in that book and I learn a lot, especially about the history of the league.

It took me a year to finish.
I read it whilst on myne throne.
There were a few parts I had to skip… mainly about guys who played in the 50’s that I never heard of. I know that’s part of the history of basketball, but I couldn’t force myself to care enough to read it. I was afraid if I forced myself to read the parts I didn’t enjoy that I’d never finish it.

It felt good to get back in the gym this morning, I’m just hoping I don’t feel a crash during work today after getting up so early. I wasn't a huge fan either.
Green Lantern was alright IME. My thing with Green Lantern was that the monster thing looked kinda cheesy. I think if they make another, it’ll be better than the original.
Haven’t seen Thor yet though.
I thought Captain America was the best of the bunch, actually. Thor was close. And Green Hornet was better than Green Lantern.

Movie: McGruber. Sex scenes still haunting me.
Game: Civ 4 and New Vegas. Old games rule.
Anyone like Civ games? Super addictive to me. Has anyone gotten/played 5? I’ve held off on getting it but know i’ll like it.
Love the Civilization games.
My favorite is still 2, such a classic, but I can’t seem to find a Mac version of it anywhere.
Also, McGruber was one of the worst movies I’ve seen.

Civ 2 was AMAZING!!!
You have no idea how much of my childhood was spent on that game. Civ 3, though, was a total downer. Not enjoyable at all.
My federal building is way cooler than your federal building.
I loved Civ 2
But I grew to love Civ 3. I’ve played it for years and honestly spent half hour searching for the disc just yesterday!
I played Civ 4 for only a couple hours and never liked it. Should I give it another try? It seemed very different to others in the series…
by aussiepiston on Jan 20, 2012 7:02 PM EST via iPhone app up reply actions
I had the Civ 2/Colonization double pack.
Colonization was kind of cool, but really hard at the same time. It was a neat concept but I got my ass kicked whenever I got sick of paying taxes and decided to revolt.
All the time relaxed.
i was given civ 2, but never played
I started w/civ 3, so going back seemed weird. Civ is definitely worth another look. the increased emphasis on religions and governments makes it much more detailed. the fighting is much more difficult, too. Being able to level up units is rewarding, too. Heard that in 5, you can’t stack units, making the combat that much more challenging. Maybe i should give 2 a try after all the recs above.
Love Civ 5
I’ve been a huge fan of the series since the original. I’ve played each one religiously, although I’ve played 5 less as my responsibilities in this phase of my life are great in other areas.
Civ 5 is a pretty serious departure from Civ 4. In many ways it is simplified, (no espionage, no religion), but it also fixes some issues that never seemed quite right (the “stack of doom” is fixed by no unit stacking, and FINALLY we have Hex-shaped spaces, rather than squares).
Civ 5 is a strong product and has received good support since the launch that has continued to add civilizations, scenarios, and races. If you have any interest at all in Civilization games, or the genre in general, it is well worth the money spent.

What other sports do people follow?
Living in Australia, I get limited coverage of NFL but have this season grown to love it as well now that I have cable. Primarily though, the big sports here are Rugby League, Cricket and Rugby Union. I love my league as much as basketball and will always follow the Aussie cricket team closely, but do people overseas and in the US even know of or watch these sports?
by aussiepiston on Jan 21, 2012 5:58 AM EST via iPhone app reply actions
I think there is a small portion of people who pay attention to things like Cricket and Rugby
but I think most of it is driven out of immigrants coming to the US and bringing that passion with them than 4th or 5th generation Americans being interested in them.
As an example, Indian Cricket is huge in Seattle but mainly because the tech industries happen to have brought in a large Indian population.

"With logic he attacks. With statistics he defends."
I'm late to the party, but WTF ...
Movie: Black Swan on HBO, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy in the theaters. I’d recommend both, although they couldn’t be more different from each other.
Book: Unless I’m forgetting something, the Walter Isaacson’s “Steve Jobs” and John U. Bacon’s “Three And Out.” I don’t read as much as I used to — I buy a lot more books than I actually finish — but those were two of the best I’ve read in a long, long time. Depending on your interest in Apple and college football, I can’t recommend them enough.
Game: Modern Warfare 3. I don’t often play first-person shooters, but I bought Battlefield 3 when it came out and really dug it. I lent it to a friend in exchange for MW3 last week. I’d give Battlefield 3 a slight edge — I play mostly for the single-player campaigns (I’m too green for online multiplayer), and Battlefield wins in both storyline and graphics. They’re both fun, though. I also picked up Assassin’s Creed 2 after many recommendations — it’s loads of fun, albeit somewhat repetitive.
