Pistons call up guard Walker Russell from D-League

According to Scott Schroeder over at Ridiculous Upside, the Pistons have dipped into the D-League, calling up ... wait for it ... point guard Walker Russell from the Fort Wayne Mad Ants:

Russell is no stranger to the Pistons organization as he spent training camp with them this season, but it's been a long time coming for the 6-foot point guard as this his first in-season NBA opportunity after spending parts of five seasons -- dating back to 2006 -- in the D-League.

The former Jacksonville State standout has had a terrific year thus far as he's dished more than 12 assists five times on his way to averages of 16 points and 9.9 assists. His best game came at perhaps the most important time, too, as he scored 19 points and dished 19 assists at last week's NBA D-League Showcase in Reno, Nev., as scouts from all 30 NBA teams were in attendance.

Rotoworld adds Russell is "known for having good basketball smarts and pick-and-roll execution, but his lack of size and perimeter skills have held him back." Sound familiar?

Vincent Goodwill confirmed the report on Twitter, hinting that this is probably a sign that Will Bynum is not very healthy, although it's been said he was targeting a Friday return.

19 and 19 is tight.

But five year D-leaguers kind of confuse me. They’re good enough to continue playing professionally, but never good enough to get called up to the bigs. On the other hand… If this dude is like Crash in Bull Durham, shouting awesome shit in Knight’s ear all the time, then I think this is the greatest move ever. Not to be confused with the greatest movie ever, which for my taste is either Blazing Saddles, The Empire Strikes Back, Reservoir Dogs or Amadeus. Also not to be confused with the greatest sports movie of all time: (Fuck no, it’s not Rudy!) Hoosiers.

Crash Davis: Oh, hey, and another thing, Meat. You don’t know shit, all right? If you wanna make it to the bigs, you’ll listen to me. Annie only wants you so she can boss you around, got it? So relax! Let’s have some fun out here! This game’s fun, OK? Fun goddamnit. And don’t hold the ball so hard, OK? It’s an egg. Hold it like an egg.

I am so sorry.

The Natural is clearly the best sports movie of all time. Damn. Now I can’t decide.

Ok...You're In Full Tank Mode

…and you need a PG.

The Lakers are in contender mode and they need a PG.

When you tank, you sign a Walker D. Russell. When you contend, you deal for Harris or Williams (although that would be an interesting trade, the Lakes and Clips dealing with each other).

As long as the guy can’t contribute any win shares and doesn’t do anything to impact our tank status, it’s fine with me.

(my 5 favorite movies? Pulp Fiction/Blazing Saddles/Godfather II/Matrix I/Usual Suspects w honorable mention to Boogie Nights and the first half of Repo Man).

This is DBB, and this is what we do.

"Bull Durham" may be the best sports movie ever

Although I would probably vote for the (very different) “Raging Bull.” But on your list of best movies ever, your omission of “This is Spinal Tap” is very disturbing.

I actually think Hoop Dreams is the best basketball movie ever made.

Major League is clearly the best baseball movie ever made.

Hell, best sports movie ever made.

Best movie ever made really.

Best display of artistic talent ever.

Best human creation.

No love for Space Jam? It’s the most star studded basketball movie in the universe!

Oh yeah, forgot about "Hoop Dreams"

That is definitely the best basketball film, and arguably best sports film, ever.

This picture of Dave Navarro has been freaking me out.

Stop fucking staring at me, dude! Your photoshopped devilish eyebrows aren’t impressing anyone. It was your guitar playing on Nothing’s Shocking. I want you to be who you are, and if being a celebrity makes you happy, then it’s all good. But I’m pretty sure you were born to fucking rock, the way a Moose is born to box out, get an offensive rebound, and score quickly while getting fouled.

Had to get that out.

Give him a chance

The Pistons aren’t going anywhere this year so its a good idea to see what Walker Russell brings. If he has had close to the impact Will Bynum brought it will be great. D-League or not 16 points and nearly 10 assist a game is pretty darn good. Sharing the ball is something the Pistons are lacking. Everyone is trying to do everything themselves it seems like.

Clearly, we need more guards.

At this point, DET’s only hope is that Austin Daye gains 85 pounds of muscle and learns to play center.

How many squats do you think that will take?

I'll take a guard that is said to execute well in the pick and roll and is averaging a bunch of assists in the d-league over Stuckey this season.

Jonas Jerebko once killed a charging female rhinoceros in heat protecting its young with nothing more than a hook shot.
