ESPN's Chris Broussard Trade Idea: Detroit Pistons trade Tayshaun Prince to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Michael Beasley
I'd do it just to get out of Tayshaun's contract, but with Derrick Williams on the roster, why would Minny do it? Beasley is due an $8.2M qualifying offer next season that the Pistons wouldn't have to tender. For contract relief only, I'd do it. Best case scenario- Beasley sees a shrink and/or joins a cult and then plays like a clear-headed athlete for once.
With Dumars' suggestion that his intent is to keep Tayshaun around as a veteran presence, I doubt he would pull the trigger either. All the more reason for this team to have a fresh perspective in the GM chair...

no brainer for the stones, imo
But i’m not sure why minny does it. are they fed up with Beasley? I know they have williams in front of him now, but how would tay be better for them? Esp with his new contract? I’d love to see it happen. worst/best case scenario? We lose more games and get Davis.
Tay is more of a natural 3
But Beasely is pretty terrible at the 4, I agree I don’t see the addition of Williams doing too much to his playing time

See, Tay could make some sense for the Wolves.
A veteran presence? That can be what a very young team that is on the verge of being a playoff team for the first time since forever. If Rubio, Love, Williams, et. al. continue their progression, Tay could actually be a plus for them, (though I’d have to think that even Kahn would have some major doubts about $8 million when Prince is 35).

Saw this on PistonPowered
I don’t understand why Broussard thinks this would help Minnesota find more time for Williams. They’re just swapping small forwards, only going from a young player on an expiring contract to an old player on a four-year back-loaded contract.
Pretty simple really...
They pay Tay to be his veteran mentor and get 20-25 minutes per game as a starter and when Williams is ready to be inserted into the starting lineup, then you move Tay to 2nd team to own the 2nd team.

I thought of a good analogy for this trade when I read that article.
It seemed like trading my dad’s old 2002 bonneville (Kind of a classic, but not really) and instead getting herpes (a communicable disease that is highly contagious). I thought it was a good analogy. I almost made a fan post about it.

Ewwww....
Other than saving cash, why would anyone think this is a good idea? Beasley is basically a slightly less crappy CV with serious pot habit. He’s got a bad attitude and he doesn’t give us anything we need (which is impressive considering how many different things we need).
My federal building is way cooler than your federal building.
Obvious.
One year versus four. Prince’s best case scenario = He remains a fairly good player. Beasley’s = He rediscovers the mojo that made him nearly as good a college player as Durant.
I’m at peace with the idea that Beasley isn’t going to progress. But we’d have a free half season to give him a chance. And if he doesn’t work, JoD can use Tay’s $25 million to resign Sheed out of retirement.
(The last part was a joke. But I’m totally serious about the rest of the post…)

if we made this move
we’d end up with a young asset, and we all know dumars does not let assets go while rebuilding, because you don’t rebuild by letting assets go. so we’d be stuck with beasley.
but on the brightside
The Tigers just got Prince Fielder! So now we have something to look forward to until the end of the season!

Work Ethic
With Beasley I question his work ethic. Coming out of college he was considered one of the best prospects. He averaged 26 pts and 12 rebounds a game. He was almost chosen ahead of Rose. Now Rose and Beasley have gone two separate ways. Rose is now a MVP and All Star, while Beasley is already on his second. No doubt he has talent, he would destroy my Texas Longhorns, he just needs to get his head together. I don’t see how he could do worse than Tayshaun, and Daye, might be worth the risk.
he IS worse than Tayshaun
which means Unibrow! Only problem is i’d only want Beasley for the rest of this season and that’s it, which would be fine if Dumars didn’t like assets so much.
Beasley is an awful basketball player and clearly a mess as a person right now.
It really is sad that we Pistons fans would look at a trade like this and see it as a net positive, idnit?

One year contract vs. four year contract
I see no comparison.
As to the downside of the trade—assuming both continue to play as they have, the Pistons win 15 instead of 17. I can live with that.

I don’t care who it is, so long as they have a one year contract that gets us out of the Tayshuan fuckup.

but
like I said, what if dumars takes this out and turns it into another millstone? I’m just scared of trusting dumars to do the smart thing anymore. he wouldn’t be able to let beasley go. he just wouldn’t. it would have to be for an expiring veteran scrub for me to back it.

But if we are thinking this way, we need to stop watching the Pistons
You may be right, but “I don’t want Dumars to do something smart, cuz he might later end up doing something dumb.”—Possibly. But what’s the point of paying any attention? “Trade Charlie V. for LeBron? Ah, he’d later just give LeBron to the Nuggets…”

doesn't matter just how fucking stupid Joe Dumars was a month ago...
all that matters now is correcting that stupidity.

I'd rather pay $8 million for a box of rocks to sit at the end of our bench for one year
Than pay Tayshaun for the next four years
I wasn’t trying to be critical. I just think it says a lot about the state of the franchise when its fans (me included) would view adding an idiot like Beasley – even if it’s just to shed salary – as a positive thing.
For the most part, we all agree that this would be a smart thing for Detroit to do. I think that underscores just how piss poor things have been managed up to this point.

Giving up after 18 games
If Joe Dumars is willing to give up on the “veteran leadership” thing after 18 games he should be fired because he believes in nothing. I’m all for altering the team to improve and of course Prince should be available at some point but throwing something against the wall to see if it sticks is what got the Pistons into this mess in the first place.
If you are going to trade flaws for flaws find another team that is desperate, which Minnesota is not. I’d rather take a chance on Amare Stoudamire in a trade with his uninsured knees. The Knicks have to be dying to get out of his deal now that they’ve found out that Chandler, Carmelo, and Stoudamire can’t play together. Give the Knicks cap relief in Ben G, Maxiell (expiring) and Daye and get back Stoudamire and a maybe a bench player like Fields or Toney Douglas.
Minnesota isn't entirely desperate...
but they need more wing scoring and they need a “veteran presence.” Tayshaun would offer both. So Minnesota might actually value him more for those reasons. Assuming their team continues to improve, they may be looking to tweak the lineup in hopes of sneaking into the 8 seed in the West. Its not likely, but ya never know what could happen…

Tayshaun Prince
Once upon a time Prince was my favorite player. I guess the past few years have somewhat blinded me to his virtues. It’s hard to imagine a team falling in love with what Tayshaun Prince has to offer when I’ve spent the last 3 years falling out of love with the same game. Maybe he’s the best 5th best player on a team to ever play in the NBA. As a top 3 player? Not so much.
Well I think the reality is, Minnesota doesn't know Tayshaun like we know Tayshaun
Tay is still considered a glue guy with veteran presence, leadership, and championship pedigree. For a team filled with young, highly talented players, that means a lot.
The reality is, Rubio arguably has just as much championship pedigree given his time playing in Europe and is likely better-suited to provide leadership in the locker room since he had to do so for guys 5-10 years older than him in Europe.
But Kahn doesn’t need to know that. That said, if they’re looking to get rid of Beasley, why wouldn’t we try to do Beasley/Pekovic for Gordon?
They still need a SG, and this would get us out of our biggest most worthless contract, add size, and provide a bit of length to our backcourt (since Tay would probably have to log some time at the 2).

If that's the best NY can get for Amare...
Then I’m game. But surely, they can get something better?
"With logic he attacks. With statistics he defends."
Money / Insurance ?
I don’t know what the market is for Amare. I’ve seen more stories about the insurability of his contract than his worth as a player. Maybe teams are just scared off by his knees? The Knicks could amnesty either BG or CV and if you throw in Maxiell it’s a lot of cap space. I wouldn’t mind building with a front court of Amare, Monroe & Jonas with Knight and Stuckey in the backcourt.
I vote
Hell to the no..Beasley smokes too much bud,and it’s making him lazy as hell.I say Joe D needs to give up 3-4 players for 1 young quality player.I don’t care how he does it..Just get it done Joe.

Sure, but the real question is...
What is Skip Bayless Steven A. Smith Scoop Jackson’s ridiculous, unfounded trade idea?
Steven A. Is OK
I have no clue how Scoop has a job, nor how Bayless is a celebrated sportwriter. Both are horrible, as much as I can’t stand Jason Whitlock, he was right about Scoop, and Bayless parlayed being a shitty columnist into a TV gig. Try to figure any of it.
This is DBB, and this is what we do.
Scoop Jackson is a real piece of shit.
