6 out of 8 and a high-scoring backcourt? Pistons 114, Kings 108
Greg Monroe? Who needs him to score more than a measly basket on seven attempts when Rodney Stuckey and Brandon Knight are combining for 59 points?
Stuckey scored 18 of his season-high 36 in the first quarter and Knight followed that up with 13 of his 23 in the second quarter. In the second half, they hit back-to-back threes in the waning minutes to put the game away and give the Pistons their 10th win of the season and sixth in their last eight games.
Despite 80-percent of a small contingent of Pistons fans preferring Moose over DeMarcus Cousins, it was the (once) coveted Cousins who dominated with 26 points and 15 rebounds. Marcus Thornton and Tyreke Evans added a combined 40 points, but needed 35 shots to do so.
It has been a confusing eight game stint for the Pistons, because five of the six wins have come against equally or worse talented teams. For instance, the Kings are the NBA's worst road team. Is Detroit going to remain competitive or will the ping pong balls pan out? At any rate, Detroit will go for seven of nine on Sunday when they take on the Celtics again.
- Rodney Stuckey after the game on Knight's 23 points, 10 assists (no turnovers), and six rebounds:
- Stuckey's 36 points was the most for him since scoring 31 in 2009. His career high is when he dropped 40 against the Bulls in 2008.
- Ben Wallace had seven rebounds in 20 minutes. He also took an awesome charge in the backcourt right after the Kings inbounded.
- [sigh] Prince outdid the Kings (pun!) and had a great game -- 22 points (on 10-19 shooting), 10 rebounds, five assists, 2 blocks, and 2 steals.

Woooo
I won the post count! Where’s my cookie?
On a side note, Stuck seems to want to be here long term now (I know his contract implied that but his attitude didn’t always).

I love that Stuckey quote...
I know some people here get nervous hearing about Stuckey being here long-term and I know at times I feel the same way. However, seeing both of them co-exist and having Stuckey accept a different role than he’s used to playing and not feeling like Knight is stepping on his toes at all makes me feel reassured that this combo might work in the long run.
I Heart Chris Paul & the LA Clippers.
yeah...they're actually complimenting each other pretty well right now.
and Gordon off the bench with the 2 of them could be a pretty solid 3 guard rotation. I just wish we had better bigs at this point. It seems very clear to me that we’ll be amnestying CV at the end of the season. With that done, we can hopefully draft a defensive minded big, another PG, and then maybe look for a defensive minded SF to replace Daye/Wilkins.

Ideally, that would be perfect.
Is there any good read on how amnesty actually works because I thought our amnesty clause expired some months ago because we didn’t use it.
I Heart Chris Paul & the LA Clippers.
any player signed prior to the new CBA is eligible to be amenstied during the acceptable amnesty period
Acceptable amnesty periods do not span during the regular season but I’m not sure at what periods during the off-season a player is eligible to be amnestied.
Also, only players that the original team signed can be amnestied. As an example, if we traded CV31 to another team, that team would not be allowed to amnesty him ever. This prevents a team from taking on a giant contract like say Rashard Lewis’s just to amnesty him.

Stuckey's numbers in February:
17.8 ppg (51% from the field, 37.5% from 3), 3 rpg, 4 apg, 1.2 TO, 6.9 free throw attempts, and 85.5 FT%. That’s some James Harden/Manu Ginobili-type production. He can’t keep this up forever, obviously, but that extension isn’t looking so bad right about now.
How's that for a slice of fried gold?

I think people are starting to understand their roles better.
and thats something Stuckey nor anybody else has had for 3 years now. Given the lack of preseason practice and what not, maybe we’re starting to see a bit of the definition that Lawrence Frank (aka a pretty solid head coach) brings to the table. I say that because I’m not so sure that these little improvements are the result of actual player development, but more of a team development. And dare I say it, the team has some cohesion
who does he think he is
going and being all above average all of a sudden?
it’s not like he hasn’t had these stretches before though.
to be fair, if he put up that production consistently from our SG position, $8M a year is pretty freaking reasonable
Ginobili is getting paid over $11M this year for a very efficient 13/3/3.
Jonas Jerebko once killed a charging female rhinoceros in heat protecting its young with nothing more than a hook shot.
consistently yeah
we’ll see how that turns out for him, and us.
he’s had killer 5 game stretches before. it’s funny because stuckey inconsistency seems to come in stretches. it’s not like he has one good game followed by a bad game, they are all consecutive it seems.
yeah...I felt like he had injuries at really bad times last year...like that cheap fucking shot by fucking Carmelo cock sucker Anthony
right after he had had a run like he’s just had. He should be able to keep it going going against Ray Allen tomorrow.
Jonas Jerebko once killed a charging female rhinoceros in heat protecting its young with nothing more than a hook shot.
As or more importantly...
I recall a couple of breakthrough games last year after which Stuck ended up riding the bench the next night.
As I’ve long said, Stuckey’s “attitude” may not have always been great. But in life there are often legit reasons for a sour attitude.

Actually, The Guard Rotation Isn't Bad
The Gordon signing just looks bad because he would look better on a contending team. We did overpay for him, but not as much as you might think.
Conversely you have Knight on a rookie contract and Stuckey on a reasonable one. They’d be a lot more effective if you had another big man.

Am I the only one who’s noticed that Stuckey suddenly acquired a jump shot?
Plus he’s making fritos (as MFThom pointed out above).
The other night during a game (I don’t remember which — they’re all a blur), the opposing team’s commentators were going on and on about how dangerous Stuckey was from 16-18 feet out. I was like, “Whaaaa…?” but then he hit a few jumpers and I was like, “Huh.”

I think we’re all viewing Stuckey through the prism of past years. Thom quoted his February numbers, but for all of 2011-2012, his TS% is a respectable .559 and his ORtg is 115, which is 17th in the league. He’s also 17th for FTAs, and because he converts at 85% (a career high), his # of made FTs is 10th leaguewide.

lol
Rec’d.
Also, I feel a weird bit of guilt for not liking Stuckey more. He plays hard and is probably having his best season so far, but I think I’m definitely jaded by the past. I kind of like it when he puts up awesome numbers and I don’t even notice him out there. That’s much better than being annoyed that he’s forcing it to the rim and throwing bricks off the glass (or getting blocked).

Even his attempts at the rim are better looking
I mean I still see circus shots, but he seems a bit more in control a bit more of the time.
I’ve had a totally weird reversal on the kid this season. I think having Brandon Knight around has made me okay that Stuckey is still here. I can’t stand the fact that Joe didn’t just give him the QO for $3M, but if this were next year and he was earning $8M, I wouldn’t whine about it much.
The weird thing is that even as he started out the season shooting like shit, I liked what I was seeing on court from him. I want better for Detroit now and I have for years, but with the state of the team now, Rodney Stuckey is not one of my concerns.
and he's even showing his best WS/48 this year.

my fav advanced stat on Stuck this season
is the o/d rating margin. This is the first he’s ever recorded a + in his career. In Detroit this season, only he, Jonas and Greg are doing that (macklin don’t count). It’s pretty apparent why, given his addition of a three point shot, slight uptick in shooting fouls drawn while taking pretty good care of the ball. This is the first time on average, for half of an even shortened season, that Rodney Stuckey has been a net positive on the court.
I've always been a Stuckey fan girl
so I’m cautiously waiting for him to break my heart again.
I do love his demeanor this year, he has actually looked like the calming veteran out there. Sort of, the job that Prince is supposed to be doing. Which is surprising.
Fire Joe Dumars
I'm thinking they won't continue this against better teams
Although the Spurs and Celtics game might say otherwise.
By the way, New Jersey is about to beat the Bulls by a wide margin...
up 18 with just over 4 left in the game!

Marshon Brooks
was a solid find. He’s a keeper. He was coming on then injured for a bit, now that he’s back NJ has a nice backcourt. Once Lopez returns they might not be too bad.
KL In A DBB Thread
Is like the punch line (end) of this Cheech & Chong classic skit.
I have said this all along, and will say it again. The team isn’t that bad. The problems are some questions with chemistry, an unbalanced lineup and lack of a shot blocker and inside out game. You really need both and do those things well, to be an elite team in the NBA.
Stuckey has his haters, yes, but he continues to improve. BK has been inconsistent, and hard to watch at times, but he’s looks like he’s a favorite to figure it out.
With a high enough pick, this could be our last year in the lottery. One can only hope.
I could give a flying fuck whether you follow me or not on Twitter.
I agree with a lot of what you said
but this
Stuckey has his haters, yes, but he continues to improve.
The problem I have with this is that Stuckey is only improving to career normals for the most part, and a lot of that has to do with this hot streak he’s on. Now if he continues like this for the rest of the season I’ll eat my words for sure, but right now he is mostly below his career normals except for a couple of area’s where he’s slightly better than the past. It’s a bit soon to say that he’s improving significantly, unless this streak keeps up for the long run of the season.
Also, Stuckey’s middle name is Norvell? What the hell is a Norvell?
With a high enough pick, this could be our last year in the lottery.
Hear, Hear!!! Next year’s ROY candidate will lead us into an offseason where we can use Chunky and Ben’s expiring contracts as trade chips.
Welcome... to the Wallace-hood
i can almost see what you are saying V about this team being not so bad but then i look at what we are successful at and then it seems like the team is held together with chewing gum and twine. D is pretty meh, sometimes it can be ok, much of that is reliant on ben wallace holding it down. when he retires who steps up? it frustrates me because the pieces are there to make a rebuild and actually move forward but there are pieces that restrict that process. god bless big ben but whats the point? detroit fans will love him forever, no need for a victory lap even though i will truly miss him when hes gone. Tayshaun? even though i hate him at this point i can admit he is actually kind of balling now. His body language looks completely different. he almost looks like the vet leader that he is being overpayed to be. Stuckey to me appears to be one of those transitional stars. He will be the guy we associate with this non era of success but will ultimately be irrelevant.

Additionally
I’d like Tay’s game more if he wasn’t getting 18-20 shots a game, and making 4-6 of them. I know Friday’s scoreline was better, but you’re now playing a 3 guard set a lot of the time, you have a C that can score, you’re the team’s worst outside shooter, how do you get so many shots?

Yeah, there's something depressing about how much these wins have relied on Big Ben
I love him, but when he’s gone next year. . . .?
not trying to be negative
but monroes defense troubles me..
he gets destroyed by slow, talented bigs (duncan), by athletic bigs (mcgee) and by physical, strong bigs (cousins)
which kind of players moose “likes” to guard?
long, smooth, can stroke it
in detroit you will never have the perfect player.
Having moose is good enough to carry us for the next few years. It is true his defense is not great but that is why we need a good defensive PF to cover for him. Besides it is not like he doesn’t want to play D (reminds me of someone in our roster). Another thing he is good at stealing ball from opposition.
Honestly, I think its too soon to tell...
When Monroe doesn’t have to worry about hedging guard play, he plays far better. that is to say, when Knight/Stuckey are playing good defense, Monroe fares better down low.
I also think he’d fare better with a defensive-minded big to play alongside him…Maxiell isn’t exactly a great helpside defender, and it seems like Frank expects Monroe to play whoever he’s playing against straight up rather than throwing double teams to help him out.

basically it comes down to what we talk about in the Draft talk threads.
We need somebody who will compliment Monroe. Monroe is a very good offensive player. He has the brains to become a decent defender. What I think we’re hoping to get in this draft is a very good defensive big with the ability to build a better offensive game.
Just playing fantasy team for a second here, but imagine Moose playing alongside vintage Big Ben? Offensive guru paired with defensive guru? Unstoppable front court. It’d basically be like watching Sheed and Ben when Sheed got all riled up and motivated.
I’ve now decided that if JOD drafts anything other then the best big available then I’m gonna shoot the cheeseburger and/or slice of meat lovers right out of his hand.
He would have completely shut down Paul Mokeski!

I only got to see the last few minutes of the 4th last night.
Blaha and Kelser mentioned the offensive pace on both sides was pretty high. Was that a result from both teams not playing defense, or did Larry tell them to turn it up a notch?
All the time relaxed.
mostly poor defense
but also I think Stuckey and Knight did a great job of attacking the basket early on in the shot clock which helped a bunch.

I don't know
whether I like the way frank told the team to play.
rotation on defense and the intensity is just not there. well maybe not having a great defender contributes but still…
on the offensive side I would love to see more set play as you can’t really rely on fast break and transition points all the time. I can really see that we are really struggling on half court offense
