I dunno, I think we should have explored signing him
He’s not so old he can’t be part of rebuilding. But even if you didn’t see him as part of the future, he could have been part of the present on a team that lacks size. As I’ve said before, Wilcox doing an adequate job at center would be good because it would allow other guys to play positions more fitting to their size/skills. A starting 4-5 of Wilcox and Monroe would be pretty darn athletic, and would have avoided the whole “JJ starting at power forward” problem. You could then bring in subs — Big Ben, CV at the 4, and JJ at the 3 might be a good combo of offense and defense; assuming CV was hurt or not playing well, sub in Maxy at the 4.
It’s all water under the bridge now, and JOD’s certainly made worse decisions, but unless there was something we don’t know about, I think it would have been better, overall, to try to get Wilcox at a decent price for a couple of years.
Think about next year. Big Ben will be gone, I think many expect CV to be amnestied. So our bigs will be Monroe, Maxy, JJ (if you consider him a PF), and some probably not-top-6 draft pick?
