Kim English led Detroit scorers with 17 points, including hitting 4-for-7 on 3-pointers. His defense was solid, too, as he drew two charges. Brandon Knight didn't play today, so English and Casper Ware played nearly 40 minutes each in the backcourt. Ware had 7 assists.
Vernon Macklin played a strong game in what may be his final game as a Piston. He converted 4 of 5 shots, grabbed 8 rebounds and led all players with a plus-13 rating. For those who wanted to consider adding V-Mack back to the roster over Khris Middleton, V-Mack's performance over 19 minutes compared favorably to that of K-Mid's 4-for-13 shooting in 33 minutes, which included an 0-for-6 from 3-point range. It will be interesting to see if K-Mid is coaxed to sign a contract in Europe this season to gain a bit more experience. Yet, even if this does transpire the roster will still have 15 spots signed if they were to keep Macklin.
Other players we're all watching carefully were less than spectacular. Andre Drummond played just 16 minutes after committing 4 fouls. He score 6 points on 3-for-7 shooting, while grabbing just 2 rebounds and blocking 1 shot. Austin Daye played 26 minutes at power forward and led all players with 11 boards while shooting 4-for-10, with two misses from behind the arc. Daye also nabbed 3 steals matched with 3 turnovers. Ware distributed the ball well while only having 2 turnovers. In my opinion he deserves a longer look. Lastly, I want to mention Yancy Gates. He closed out his tryout with 8 points, 4 boards, and 3 steals. Not too shabby, but probably not good enough for a longer look.
The team closes out its Summer League play 4-1 and should be encouraged by the play of at least 3 of its new rookies (Drummond, Singler, and English). Questions may still linger about the future of Daye, Macklin, and Middleton on this year's team. Macklin's fate of course depends on whether the Pistons complete the signing of Vyacheslav Kratsov and Big Ben's return. In my opinion, I like VMack and would like to see him on the squad.
