Andre Drummond's second basket of the game following his sixth rebound put the Pistons up 15 in the first quarter, 28-13. Drummond had four points and six rebounds and had been in the game for a total of 3:39. Scwhing.
You could just sense he was on his way to something special for a 19-year-old rookie. I was in amazement. We were all in awe. Unfortunately, it's as if the Pistons stopped to gaze, too, and totally flopped in the process.
Whatever you think happened, the Bucks turned around a 15-point deficit into a 29-point lead, a freaking 44-point swing. Mike Dunleavy scored 12 points in the second quarter to help the Bucks go up 10 at the half and Brandon Jennings scored 20 points and assisted four other baskets in the third quarter to turn the game into a bona fide blow out. (Jennings went on an NBA Jam like 16-0 run all by himself in the third, hitting four straight three pointers at one point!)
Drummond would finish the game as anticipated - with a historic performance. In just under 28 minutes, Drummond finished with 18 points on 9-for-15 shooting, 18 rebounds, two steals and a block. He had a double double in just under 12 minutes of playing time and had just about all NBA fans sitting cross-legged and pantless in front of their TV sets (or computers). Dwight Howard, poor man's Drummond, is the only other player since at least 1985-1986 to post these kind of gaudy numbers as a teenager.
So what really happened to the rest of the team while Drummond was going off?
Let's read what Drummond had to say after the game [quotes via The Detroit News]:
"We laid down today," Drummond said. "We let them come in here and do what they wanted. We have to bounce back against Indiana and put this behind us."
Drummond wasn't feeling good about his game. It came during the worst home loss of the season and this was not a good feeling for him.
"It doesn't matter what I had tonight," Drummond said. "We lost the game."
"I think we took our foot off the gas and let them get what they wanted," he said. They took a lot of 3s and made them because we let them get comfortable."
The good news is that Indiana is tonight, so there's no time for dwelling.
