Pistons vs. Wizards: Tony Mitchell makes a statement

Watch Tony Mitchell sink a difficult buzzer beater at the end of the first quarter -- which was just one of several things he did right on Tuesday. If he keeps it up, Mo Cheeks hints that he might be due for more playing time.

Those are two of Tony Mitchell's eight points against the Wizards on Tuesday, coming at the end of the first quarter. He finished the game shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the field -- but that's just part of the story. He also blocked a couple of shots, dished two assists, notched a steal and a rebound.

His steal was pretty fun: he picked off an errant John Wall pass in the first quarter and led a fast break before assisting to a trailing Jonas Jerebko.

Simply put, the dude's just fun to watch -- I'm really, really hoping we see a whole lot of him all season long. Fortunately, it sounds like Mo Cheeks is willing to consider it. When asked about Mitchell's chances for regular-season playing time, he replied:

"We just play the game. There's not one guy, or this guy or that guy. I try to utilize everybody. And one thing I mentioned to our guys ... the reason why you have 15 guys is because you can use them. There's not one guy that I'm going to say, he's going to do this, he's going to that. In any given night, you can put anybody in the game. Tony was tonight, Josh Harrellson was tonight, so it could be anybody."

Cheeks continued when asked specifically about Mitchell's performance Tuesday:

“I think he played well. His attention to detail was good. I think you know he’s a rookie. He’s going to make some rookie mistakes. He made a few of them tonight, but veterans make mistakes too.”

As for Harrellson, he played nearly six minutes, scoring four points with two assists.
