Jose Calderon could miss two more games due to visa issues

Chris Humphreys-USA TODAY Sports

The Pistons' new point guard is definitely out Sunday against the Lakers and he could miss Monday's game against the Knicks.

This visa issue is really starting to get on my nerves.

As Detroit Pistons fans everywhere anxiously await the official arrival of Jose Calderon, already anointed as the Pistons starting point guard, bureaucracy and red tape keep getting in the way.

Calderon, a Spanish citizen who spent his entire NBA career playing for the Raptors of Toronto is having trouble getting a work visa to play for a team in the U.S. He has already missed two games and now he's been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Lakers and could also miss Monday's game against the New York Knicks.

It all depends, according to MLive, exactly what time his visa issues are finally in the past.

The Pistons traditionally don't have a game-day shootaround for a back-end game but that's predicated upon playing the night before. Sunday's 1 p.m. tipoff could alter Monday's plan. It's akin to traveling after a practice, the night before a game, like any other single-game road trip.

Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said he hasn't decided whether to have a Monday shootaround.

His decision could be driven by the timing of Calderon's visa ruling. If Calderon is cleared early Monday, he could get a shootaround in and play the Knicks that night. Even then, he's running a new team with little more than what he has picked up in study.

It gets even sketchier with no shootaround.

"I've thought about it but I don't know what my answer is yet," Frank said when asked about that scenario. "I don't know what I'd do."

Hopefully Brandon Knight has a few more 20-10 games left in him.
