Let's start with this: I, too, wanted to see Shaw, or Hollins, or Jackson, or Obradovic, or Karl, or Budenholzer, or Stan Van Gundy, or Larry Brown instead of Maurice Cheeks. I can even say that I preferred McMillan.
But we need to be realistic and less naive: all of them (except for Larry Brown) prefer to coach somewhere else (even if that means Europe), or not even at all.
There´s a phrase for this in Portuguese here in Brazil: that´s what we have for supper tonight. The kid might want some fancy food for supper, but if all there is is simple food, it's better to eat that than starve.
Cheeks is what we have for tonight. It´s the best thing we can get at this moment and the fanbase and some columnists should not go all whining and crying because of the choice. I think there are 3 other guys that would have also accepted the job: Bill Laimbeer, Isiah Thomas and Lindsay Hunter. But they are all higher risk / higher reward choices, and Dumars does not have the time for that.
It's understandable and better than Frank, who had completely lost the respect from players, fans and front office.
What we, fans, should do right now is trust and support Dumars (who has been and one way or another responsable for all the championships this organization has) and Cheeks, allowing them to do their jobs.
The next steps are getting nice picks in the draft and adding the right players through free agency and trades. They have the tools and flexibility for that.
Support now, complain later in case it does not work out. It was the best we could afford.
