NBA free agent rumors: Will Bynum now "more likely" to re-sign with Pistons, according to report

USA TODAY Sports

Will the Detroit Pistons re-sign Jose Calderon? Will they draft Trey Burke? Will the put the ball back in Brandon Knight's hands? No one really knows yet what will happen to the Pistons' starting point guard job, but an unnamed source leaking news to an out of town reporter seems to think the team is leaning toward solidifying the backup job.

From Marc Berman of the New York Post, in article discussing the Knicks' options at the same positon:

Free agency begins July 1 and they could fill the point guard slot with their mini mid-level exception of $3.1 million, with the Pistons’ Will Bynum as a target. But according to a source, the recent hiring of Maurice Cheeks in Detroit makes it more likely Bynum will re-sign there. Bynum and Cheeks are both from Chicago.

Take it with a grain of salt and all your other standard caveats, but I wouldn't be surprised to see this happen.

Bynum is coming off a three-year, $9.75 million deal. He might be able to command a similar contract, but he'll probably settle for a bit less. For one, he's now 30 years old, so you're now signing him for track record and not his potential. His advanced and per-36 numbers have been relatively stable the last several years, albeit a slight uptick last season after rebounding from a particularly bad 2011-12.

His presence on the court is sometimes polarizing ("Yuck," replied one unnamed DBB editor when told of Berman's report), but I enjoy his rapport with Andre Drummond and wouldn't mind seeing him return, especially for the right price. Now your thoughts.
