Joe Dumars already told us that he is really working the phones to make trades this off season and multiple articles I have read said that they would not be surprised if the highest paid player on the team next season was acquired through trades. I am very confident that a trade this off season will bring an important piece to this team’s future. So I am going to take you through what the team has now and what they need in to get. If you want to see the possible trades then please skip down to the bottom.
Right now our team looks like this, minus free agents.
PG: peyton siva
PG/SG: knight, stuckey
SG: KCP, kim english
SF: kyle singler
SF/PF: JJ, middleton
PF: greg monroe, tony mitchell, charlie v
C: Drummond, kravtsov
Free agents = calderon, bynum, maggette, maxiel
There are a few types of players that I feel like we will need to acquire this offseason. I listed what I think the Pistons need below this, both the position and the specialties.
PG = 2, leader, passer, shooter, athletic
SG = 1, shooter, defender, scorer, athletic
SF = 1, defender, shooter, passer, athletic
PF = 0
C = maybe 1 backup, energy, shooter, athletic
With the pistons wanting to get much more athletic and to be more defensive focused those would both be things that are very necessary for our new prospects to have.
Our roster now stands at 13 so if we were to acquire all these players we would need to lose a couple of the guys already on this team. So, I tried to think of what upper management thought of our players on how willing they are to move them and this is what I came up with.
Untouchables: Drummond, Monroe
Preferred to Keep: Siva, Knight, Kcp, singler, middleton, Mitchell, Kravtsov
Disposable: Stuckey, JJ, Charlie V, Kim English
(I don’t know any of that to be fact it is just guessing from what the Detroit pistons say and what the insiders say)
Following are the trades I think would be plausible:
eric bledsoe: I think the least we can give up for him is knight. They seem to really like affolo and the pistons will have to top that. We would probably have to throw in a pick or singler. I think knight, Protected pick for 2016 and Knight, or Knight and singler could be an alright trade but I would prefer not to do this if it is more than knight.
Future first round pick
Vasquez: He might be a little bit more expensive but I believe he is a lot safer of a pickup than bledsoe. bledsoe averaged about 3 assist per 20 minutes while Vasquez averaged 9 assist per 34 min on a much worse team. With the pelicans losing their small forward in free agency, and also would like to sure up their guard spot, I think we have players to offer them. eric gordan is only 6'3" so you know they are willing to take smaller guards like knight or stuckey.
Pick (Second round/ heavily protected)
Eric Gordon: Speaking of Eric Gordon there have been some rumors that they are shopping him and his 13 million dollar contract around. Would you guys be willing to take a risk on his health to get him on your team? If they are trying to just free up that cap space (which seems doubtful. I don’t believe they have given up on him yet) he could come cheaper then they acquired him for, Chris Paul.
A couple First round future picks (2016, 2018)
That Is a risky trade that could work out huge (!) for Detroit but also could leave us with a big contract and no first rounders for the pistons to try and correct the mistake, if we do this trade we would be left with about the same cap space and always have the amnesty of Charlie v in our back pocket. With this we would have everything but a small forward and there is a guy called iggy who might be attracted to this team. I doubt Eric Gordon is an actual option though. However it would be the perfect last surge by Joe dumars to try and resurrect his legacy.
Danny Granger: He is in the last year of his contract and may be available with the emergence of Paul George. He also just had knee surgery and is starting to age. The pacers have said that they are really considering keeping him in hopes that he returns to his former self. The talks for a trade of Eric Bledsoe and Danny Granger didn’t go very far. Are you, as a Piston’s fan, willing to give up pieces that are worth more than Eric Bledsoe? I don’t think I would want to give up knight for that 13 million dollar man. I would give up stuckey for that risk but there is 0% chances that the pacers would accept that.
Luol Deng: Deng is in the exact same spot as Grange with the emergence of a cheaper player except he is not coming off of surgery and the bulls are also trying to slip below the luxury tax. It is hard to judge what the bulls want for him because the only talks that they really had was for the wizards 3rd pick and Emeka Okafor; these talks did not go very far. Knight is our best trading piece I believe we would be willing to give up and with the bulls trying to lose salary this could work. I however don’t believe a knight for just deng would be accepted and I wouldn’t want to give up anything more than that. To get deng an old, 13 million dollar player I don’t believe it is worth it.
Pick (Second round/ heavily protected)
Trevor Ariza: With the selection of otto porter and two other small forwards on their roster they are likely shopping Ariza around the league. He also has an expiring contract so his 7.7 mil will come off the board pretty quickly. It is hard to predict what the wizards would want for him but they need more depth in their guard spots and a sign and trade could be possible
JJ or stuckey
Will bynum (sign and trade)
Thomas Robinson: He is being shopped to make room for Dwight and is going very cheap. I think with the selection of tony Mitchell we are out of the running for him but I would love to give up a couple of second rounds for him. From the way they have been shopping him however it looks like they are only interested in first rounders, and probably only in this next draft. I think we are out of the running for this former lottery pick.
Rajon Rondo: Rajon Rondo seems to be a popular name on these boards. I am not in love with him for the soul purpose that he is aging and coming off a serious injury. He is an undersized guard that relies on quickness and agility who just tore apart his knee. That is a risky situation. He will also come pretty expensive. As the Celtics are now in full rebuild mode they are hungry for picks and dumping salary.
First Round (2016 protected)
Jeremy Lin: The Rockets are trying to dump his salary in hopes of getting two max deals done this free agency and I haven’t heard his name mentioned on this board yet. He was the cause for the mental outbreak that happened in New York a couple years back and now has a lot of money coming to him. How do you guys feel about Jeremy Lin? I think to send them a couple cheap contracts and a pick we could land Lin. I’m not a fan of how much money he is making for his performance last year but We do need a PG.
First Round (2016 protected)
What I would like to see happen is for the pistons to take Grevis Vasquez while he is available. I think I would be willing to take the risk on Erik Gordon too but I don’t think he is touchable right now. The only one that really appeals to me is Grevis, however, I will be happy if there is any turn around between some of our older and less cooperative players to young and just fresh players who need to win and work hard would be nice.
These are the best players out there that would both fit the pistons needs and are available. What do you guys think: is there anyone else you want to pursue in trades? Is there a combination you would like? Do you guys think I’m off in anyone of m conclusions with certain players and pieces to the trade? Do I need to rethink what the pistons need? I really made this post solely to start conversations in the comments so whatever you think about this and what the pistons are doing please write it down. I hope this will also help pass the time before something actually does happen.
I could also make a post involving free agents and restricted free agents if you guys would like just let me know.
