How about none other than two time MVP, Steve Nash? Yes, the guy is 39. Yes, the guy is slightly over the hill. Yes, the guy only has probably 2 more decent years ahead of him.
But, in reality, who better to make our band of misfit pieces work than mother-fucking Steve Nash. 3-point shooting? Check. Elite in the Pnr? Check. Terrible perimeter defense covered by 3 monsters behind him? Check. Mike Abdenour daily massages? Check.
What would it take to get him? Not much. The Lakers want cap space for the 2014 FA class and the Rodney Stuckey/Villanueva poopoo platter might just be enough to pry him away. If not, I'm sure it won't be too much more.
We know he can only give us about 30 mins/game, but that is where Knight/Siva come in. They could be our poor man's version of Lindsay Hunter and Mike James.
Now, I know some of you will automatically reply with why would you trade for a 39yo pg on a young team that is not ready to win now. For one, it has the obvious benefits of learning from a winner. Just watching the way a guy like Steve Nash practice every day for a game is contagious. And, hey, any free throw shooting help that Drummond can get will not be the worst thing in the world...one would think that one of the best free throw shooter of all time could help in this regard (cue the Dwight Howard regression comments, to which I respond one is a knucklehead and the other realizes he has a problem and wants to get better).
Who is to say we aren't ready to compete this year? Say Orlando gets antsy midway through the season and wants to get rid of Afflalo on the cheap for a 2016 first round pick. Nash/Afflalo/Smith/Monroe/Drummond are a matchup nightmare for Miami. We are strong where Miami is weak. If George Hill/Lance Stephenson/Paul George/David West/Roy Hibbert with the worst bench in the NBA can take Miami to 7 games, why can't we?
Maybe I'm just a kid with a dream, but hey, at least I see a light at the end of the tunnel, a tunnel that was pure darkness at this time one year ago.
