I've been following DBB for a couple of years but only started commenting on some of the articles recently. This will be my first attempt at a fanpost. I'm guessing the majority might disagree with my point of view, but I'd like to share my thoughts on the mess that we currently are. I just hope it isn't a waste of cyber space.
We are all living in a dream world with all of these trade machine trades that are being proposed. If we get rid of Josh Smith we are either giving up another 1st rounder or we are taking back a bad contract.
We are not in the position to contend right now, nor will we be in that position for a minimum of 3 years. So, I really see no point in trading Smith at this point by giving up picks or taking back bad contracts, unless his presence truly hinders the development or future of Greg Monroe!
In all honesty, I would suck it up this season, no matter what the results are and resign Monroe. Then, this coming summer I would finally, after years of failed attempts, hire a GOOD, established coach and send Cheeks packing. The new coach can further develop and mold our young core of KCP, Monroe, Drummond and potentially Jennings?!... and when the timing is right, 2-3 years down the line trade Smith for a piece that can make us contenders. This is what I think Dumars was/is aiming for, but the Cheeks hire has made it more difficult/complicated.
Come to think of it maybe I'm the one living in a dream world, but I say fuck it, lets ride it out!
PS: This morning I read an interesting article on the Pistons by Zach Lowe which you can find here http://grantland.com/the-triangle/the-pistons-shouldnt-be-this-bad/
