The Knicks are a barren basketball wasteland.
Their front court has been decimated... Chandler has had time out, Amare is a husk, Kenyon Martin is regularly hobbled, who knows about MWP, and now Bargs is out indefinitely with a torn elbow ligament.
Their back court isn't much better, with JR Smith having imploded, Prigioni out injured, and Beno Udrih requesting a trade. I'll avoid making jokes about Felton's girth.
There's also no point in them tanking, as they've given away most of their draft picks... both in 2014 (1st to Denver, 2nd to Houston), their 2nd rounder in 2015 (to Houston), and are swapping various picks in 2016 with Houston and Toronto. My rudimentary trade knowledge suggests they're unable to trade their 2015 first rounder (can't trade consecutive year's picks).
They're way over the salary cap and currently sitting at 15-27, and Melo may be wanting out.
And their fans are even more depressed than us.
This screams desperation to me... and they may just be desperate enough to trade for Josh Smith.
The problem is that they don't have much to send back. Picks are out of the question, unless we're happy with some time in 2018 or later. We'd be most interested in Shump or Tim Hardaway Jr, but I'm not sure the Knicks are giving them up easily... their wing-stock would be decimated.
Would we be willing to take back Amare (2 years $45m) or Bargnani (2 years $22m) to put an end to the Josh Smith experiment (4yrs $56m)?
Smoove + Jerebko for Bargnani + JR Smith
Smoove + CV for Amare + Tim Hardaway Jr
Trade Machine says yes, but would they, and should we?
