The Detroit Pistons fired Maurice Cheeks, according to Adrian Wojnarowski.
Despite back-to-back victories on the weekend, general manager Joe Dumars informed Cheeks of his dismissal on Sunday morning, sources said.
Cheeks didn't make it to the All-Star break of his first season as Detroit's coach. He was in the first year of a two-year contract with the Pistons.
Owner Tom Gores had become increasingly impatient with Cheeks, and sources with knowledge of his plans say that he had been pushing for a change in the coaching staff.
This is surprising, especially considering the team is coming off back-to-back victories over Brooklyn and Denver. If this was dictated by owner Tom Gores, as Wojnarowski writes, then it can't be a good sign for Dumars' future in Detroit. The general manager is in his final season under contract. While he is less likely to be fired, he isn't exactly off the hot seat.
With just two weeks before the NBA trade deadline, does Gores trust Dumars to make moves that could improve the team either this season or going into the future? Does this mean Detroit is officially giving up on the season? Did they just become sellers?
Many questions remain and Detroit Bad Boys will work to deliver all the breaking developments as more information becomes available.
