The Pistons flew to Minnesota, put on their uniforms and then forgot they had a basketball game.
The Pistons led 3-2, but never had a chance after that. The Kevins in Minnesota (maybe Kevin Sawyer, too) scored 25 of the next 37 points for the Timberwolves and that was all in the first quarter. It was 39-21 after 12 minutes and the Pistons trailed by as many as 31 in the game. It was never a real contest.
In a hint of irony, the NBA's worst 4th quarter team outscored the Timberwolves 32-17 in the fourth. The Pistons even had a chance to cover the spread (+9.5), but Will Bynum missed a layup with a minute and a half remaining and Gigi Datome -- yes, he played -- missed a jumper with about 40 seconds left.
Who stood out:
-- It's getting ugly vs. Minny [MLIVE]:
The Pistons have lost eight straight in the series, by an average of 13.6 points. Only two of the games were decided by single-digit margins. The Pistons' last win over the Timberwolves was here in the 2009-10 season finale.
-- KCP played 20-plus minutes, his longest stretch of PT since he was pulled from the starting lineup.
-- Andre Drummond got into early foul trouble and thus, had his second straight "off" game.
-- Think Chauncey Billups was happy to see how his teammates responded to him somewhat calling them out?
95-64 in the third? How can you root for this team? #Pistons— Tom Leyden (@TomLeyden) March 8, 2014
By always having a spotter.
-- Box score
-- Despite the loss, the Pistons are unlikely to lose ground in the "fight" for No. 8 -- Atlanta's in Golden State tonight and probably not going to win. So the Pistons will still trail by three games, but with one fewer game to make up the ground. They play Boston on Friday night.
