The 2014 draft i believe is vital for the Pistons future success. With Drummond emerging as a young superstar, 26 points and 26 rebounds is amazing. With that performance, Drummond has cemented himself even more as the center piece of the Pistons. Now back to the draft, if the Pistons end up with the 8th pick they will still have the chance to take a good player who can contribute right away and maybe even become a very key player in the future. Crazy things can happen in the lottery, could end up with the 3rd pick or could fall to 10th and then the Bobcats get the pick and all this speculation was for no reason. But for the sake of this article lets just assume that Detroit gets the 8th pick in the draft.
So the Pistons are picking 8th and the obvious players are off the board. Wiggins, Embid, Parker (if he declares), Exum, and Vonleh. I personally think that Julius Randle and Marcus Smart will also be drafted before the Pistons get a pick but they could both fall. Now with the 8th pick, I trade down. Trade with the bulls, trade the 8th pick for the 16th and 19th. If someone who can contribute right away is still there at 8 then no way do I trade down, but if not then I trade that one pick for two. With the 16th pick I would select Adreian Payne. Great athlete, can spread the floor and works harder than anyone I have ever seen. I know Monroe is at that position but I think we should let him walk. His attitude lately has been unacceptable. He complains that he gets fouled every possession and his effort has been minimal. I don't think Monroe is a good fit for Detroit and I would let him walk or do a sign and trade.
Now with the 19th pick, I would take Shabazz Napier. Kid is a straight up player, if you watched the NCAA Tournament you know this kid can play. He would be a great back up to Jennings. Then in 2 seasons he might even be able to take over the starting job. He hustles, he works very hard out there, and he can score. I believe that hard working players are what we need in Detroit. The talent level of Josh Smith, Brandon Jennings and Andre Drummond are well above many other players. Throw in some hard working guys and the Pistons could get a whole new attitude change. Guys who want to win, and know how to win.
Now with the 2nd round pick, which is the 38th pick. I would take Thanasis Antetokounmpo. The guy really is a Greek Freak. He is long, athletic and hard working. His brother, Giannis Antetokounmpo is the popular one and the better one but Thansis has a ton of talent too. I have seen him play multiple times in the D-League and he can really play. He had to play PG one game and he handled the ball well, created plays, and looked like a future NBA player. Take the kid and he would bring defensive aggression and hustle. Plus a lot of potential, and who doesn't love potential when it comes to a 2nd round pick.
Joe Dumars is on his way out and the Pistons need someone new. Hopefully he will draft well and the Pistons can turn their fortune around a bit. If i was hired as the GM, this is what I would do. I'm sure many of us think we could do a better job than Dumars has in the last 10 years or so. The 2014 Draft is important, and this is how I would get the most out of it.
