Where Were You? (For DBBers in their 30's and beyond...)

Lots to say about Joe Dumars. Most of us still love the guy and appreciate what he did. (Watching his HoF acceptance speech today really further convinced me that he's a genuinely good guy in addition to being an NBA great.) Most of what could be said about Joe has been said, so the purpose here is something a little more personal and self-focused in nature. And I'd like the rest of you oldies to participate.

Since both of my parents died last year, I've found myself somewhat morbidly fixated on how time slips away. I've had a ton of "Jesus...that was TWENTY-THREE YEARS AGO??!!!" moments and regularly find myself playing little games with the passage of time. A favorite is to take some milestone event in history, or culture, or my life and then determine a prior milestone event to which it is closer than it is to the present day. ( Example: the Sex Pistols record came out in 1977. It's now 2014, so it's been 37 years. So, Johnny Rotten is closer in time to the attack on Pearl Harbor than it is to today. Fuuuuuuuck.....)

So, where were you when Joe Dumars was drafted by the Detroit Pistons on June 18, 1985? *Who* were you when Joe Dumars was drafted by the Detroit Pistons on June 18, 1985? That's twenty-nine long years--more than what will turn out to be a third of our lives for most of us. Few of us would have the ability to recall that particular night, of course, but I think some of us could come surprisingly close. This exercise will likely bring back some memories and make us yet again all-too-aware of the number that Time does on us all.

As Pablo Neruda put it--"Hoy es hoy y ayer se fue. No hay duda."

Me, I had either just landed in Idstein West Germany or was in NYC (where the draft was held!) about to board a flight. I spent that summer working as a gardener for the city of Idstein. It was my first trip out of the country and certainly a right of passage following my third year of college. I distinctly remember getting to drink more than my fill of cheap German beer or all summer, but then returning to the States five days before my 21st and being enraged that I couldn't legally drink again.

That's where and who I was was Joe Dumars was drafted.

Where and who were you?
