I don't like Josh Smith. You don't like Josh Smith. We all don't like Josh Smith. But, with a roster that offers no certainty as to the direction the new GM will take in the summer...I thought it would be fun to speculate a little bit with only 7 games remaining.
There are, of course, a few things to decide with this squad starting in a few weeks:
1) Will we be able to trade Josh Smith, and who will be arriving in return?
2) Will Greg want to resign if we offer him a reasonable contract?
3) Will Jonas opt out of his contract to hit the open market?
4) Will we keep our first round draft pick? And if so, who best fits the current roster that is likely to be there at #7/8?
Let's assume though that we trade Josh for an expensive expiring contract/insignificant role player, Jonas opts out, Greg resigns, and we draft Aaron Gordon (currently the consensus #7 pick in mock drafts). With the below roster, who would you all go after as a free agent? Take into account the salary cap, team needs, reality (Lebron is coming, etc.) and a strategic direction (I personally think it's ok to draft a project because Drumroe still need a couple of years to hit their peak together...but when they do, the league should watch out).
PG: Jennings, Bynum, Siva
SF: Singler, Datome
PF: Monroe, Aaron Gordon, Tony Mitchell
C: Drummond, Jorts
With Billups probably retiring and us resigning Monroe, we'll have about $15M in cap. Here's the FA list: http://hoopshype.com/free_agency_2014.htm.
Go at it!
