Beyer was a longtime assistant to Van Gundy in Orlando.

Charlotte Bobcats assistant Bob Beyer is a "strong candidate" to be the top assistant coach for Stan Van Gundy's new Detroit Pistons coaching staff, reports Yahoo Sport's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Beyer served as an assistant coach under Stan Van Gundy for several years with the Orlando Magic. Beyer spent one year as a member of former Van Gundy assistant Steve Clifford's staff in Charlotte and the year before that as a member of Mark Jackson's staff in Golden State.

Last August Beyer was arrested during a night out with friends after an altercation with a restaurant bouncer. Beyer was reportedly charged with second-degree obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

Beyer spent the first 20 years of his coaching career in college, including a couple of years alongside Van Gundy as assistant coaches with the Wisconsin Badgers for Stu Jackson, who is reportedly a general manager candidate in Detroit.

Beyer then jumped to the pros as an assistant with the Toronto Raptors in 2003, went back to college for a couple years at Dayton and then spent 2007-12 with Van Gundy in Orlando.
