Let's be honest with ourselves for a moment. None of us want him on this team. I have a feeling though, that's probably not going to be changing. And in a perfect world, Greg Monroe will still be a Piston for a long time to come. We all saw how terrible the Pistons were with our 3 big men on the floor. That's not all Josh Smith's fault. Josh Smith was asked to play out of position, and be the teams #1 offensive option. That lead to a HORRIBLE season for Mr. Smith. We all know that, it's been said a million times. I digress.
This week, during all of the hoopla surrounding Stan Van Gundy; all of the interviews, all of the opinions, all of the misunderstanding on his views of analytics (my bad guys). The thing that stood out to me is that he referred to his three big men as a "big man ROTATION". Hmm. Rotation means that one of these guys is going to come off of our bench next year (if they are all still here). This lead me to thinking about Josh Smith
Is Josh Smith not the perfect 6th man for the Pistons? Josh Smith, as we've come to find out doesn't do well when he has the responsibility that comes with being a starter. As a 6th man, all he has to do is provide energy off the bench, and put the ball in the bucket. Think about other good to great 6th men. Now think about why they don't start. Most of them don't start because they take irresponsible shots. The 6th man is a little unorthodox. The 6th man is good to great in spurts. This is Josh Smith. He would be great if all he's asked to do is come in for a few minutes at a time and get the ball in the hole. Make him play PF, make him a small ball C. Get the team out on the run. Get some points. Get him out of the game. If he's on, play him in crunch time. If he's doing typical Josh Smith things, he sits. I don't see any good argument against this. If properly motivated by this, he could be a 6th man of the year type of player.
$14/yr for a 6th man is not ideal. But isn't this really our only choice if he and Monroe are on the same team come next season? What other option's are there? Would Monroe be the better 6th man?
