Report: Stats guy Charles Klask expected to return to Pistons

Stan Van Gundy continues to fill his staff with coaches that have a history with both him and the Pistons.

Vince Ellis reports that former Pistons assistant coach and stats guy Charles Klask is expected to re-join the organization and former boss, Stan Van Gundy.

Klask spent two years in Detroit, in charge of game-plan prep, statistical analysis, and scouting. His addition in 2011 was a welcome one, signaling a emphasis in the advanced numbers for the first time of the Joe Dumars era. Required viewing is from when he was highlighted in this video last year, talking about some of his history and what the numbers were showing for the squad.

The past season, Klask worked with the Brooklyn Nets as an assistant coach on Jason Kidd's staff. He followed Frank to the team, as much of Kidd's staff was made up of former Frank assistants. With the tension between Frank and Kidd last season, it makes sense that some changes may be forthcoming in the Nets staff.

Klask spent 10 years in Orlando as a video coordinator, advanced scout, and eventually working his way up to the scouting information manager. Van Gundy leaned heavily on Klask, giving him the role of the go-to guy for coordinating data and figures. As Van Gundy developed a reputation as sneakily savvy in the analytics department, Klask was the person providing him the information.

He's a Michigan native from Livonia and went to college at Michigan State. His start in the NBA came with the Pistons as a video coordinating intern in 2001, and also worked with the Detroit Shock and Grand Rapids Hoops.
