Stan Van Gundy reveals (Sheed-less) coaching staff

The Detroit Pistons announced Stan Van Gundy's coaching staff on Friday. It includes some names that have already leaked out -- but does not include Rasheed Wallace, who made his sideline debut last season as a Pistons player development coach. The team's official press release is below:

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Detroit Pistons Head Coach and President of Basketball Operations Stan Van Gundy announced today that the team has named Brendan Malone, Bob Beyer and Charles Klask as assistant coaches and Adam Glessner as a team scout. Per team policy, terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

“I’m pleased to welcome Brendan Malone, Bob Beyer, Charles Klask and Adam Glessner to the Detroit Pistons organization,” said Van Gundy. “These gentlemen bring NBA experience and a wealth of basketball knowledge to our staff and they also understand the system and style of basketball we want to implement going forward.”

Malone spent five seasons (2007-12) as an assistant coach on Van Gundy’s staff with the Orlando Magic. He returns to Detroit where he served as an assistant coach from 1988-95, including four seasons (1988-92) on Hall of Fame coach Chuck Daly’s staff when he helped the Pistons win back-to-back NBA titles in 1989 and 1990. In 1995, he was named the first head coach of the expansion Toronto Raptors. Malone’s NBA coaching career began with the New York Knicks as an assistant coach in 1986. He later had two more stints with the Knicks (1997-00 and 2003-04). He’s also served as an assistant coach with the Indiana Pacers (2000-03) and Cleveland Cavaliers (2004-05), where he took over as head coach for the final 18 games of that season. Collegiately, Malone worked as an assistant coach at Fordham (1976-77), Yale (1977-78) and Syracuse (1978-84) before becoming the head coach at the University of Rhode Island (1984-86).

Beyer enters his first season with the Pistons after spending last season as an assistant coach with the Charlotte Bobcats and the 2012-13 season as an assistant with the Golden State Warriors. He also worked on Van Gundy’s staff in Orlando from 2007-12. Beyer’s NBA career began as an assistant coach with the Toronto Raptors during the 2003-04 season. Before jumping to the NBA, Beyer worked two seasons as an assistant coach at Texas Tech University (2001-03) under legendary coach Bobby Knight. He was the head coach at Siena College from 1994-97 and also had stints as an assistant coach at the University of Albany (1985-89), Siena (1989-93), University of Wisconsin (1994-97), Northwestern University (1997-2000) and University of Dayton (2005-07).

Klask returns to his native Detroit for a third stint with the Pistons after working last season as an assistant coach/advance scout with the Brooklyn Nets. Klask served as an assistant coach with the Pistons from 2011-13 after spending 10 years with the Orlando Magic where he worked as a video coordinator, advance scout and scouting information manager. He got his start as a video coordinating intern with the Pistons in 2001 and also served as video coordinator for the Detroit Shock, of the WNBA, that season. The Michigan State graduate worked as a coaching assistant with the Grand Rapids Hoops of the Continental Basketball Association and assistant coach for the Dodge City Legend of the USBL prior to his internship with the Pistons.

Glessner begins his first season with the Pistons as a scout after serving as a coaching associate with the Bobcats last season. He spent the previous six years with the Orlando Magic, including working under Van Gundy from 2007-12, beginning as an assistant video coordinator, then video coordinator and finally as a video analyst. He also served as an assistant video coordinator on head coach Billy Donovan’s staff at the University of Florida when the Gators won back-to-back NCAA Men’s Championships in 2006 and 2007. A native of Harrisburg, PA, Glessner is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts and earned a Master’s Degree in Sports Management at Florida.

The team also announced that assistant coach Henry Bibby, player development coaches Rasheed Wallace and Bernard Smith, advance scout Kamran Sufi and video coordinator Raman Sposato will not be retained.
