Joe Dumars: Complete draft history with the Pistons

As requested by J Dre, here is an article similar to the Jeff Bower: Complete draft history with the Hornets article created by Sean_Corp.

Now that Joe Dumars is no longer the new general manager for the Pistons (and we have a new one), I thought perhaps it would be a good idea to closely examine his history in the draft. I thought it would be a good idea. Maybe it still is, but I'm less sure.

Sometimes data is clarifying and sometimes it is just a bunch of noise. I've compiled the chart below and I'll let the readers be the judge on how beneficial it is.

A few notes: I collected draft information from 2000-13, during this time Dumars served in the following capacities: 1999-00: Detroit Pistons, Director of Player Personnel; 2000-13: Detroit Pistons, President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Sometimes he was the key decision maker, sometimes not. But I figured more data is better than less data, and Dumars was obviously a key figure within the organization during the entire span.

On to the data!

With all of that in consideration, if all of those drafts were redone today based on current career WS:

  • 3 (9.09%) - Rank the same in career WS to where they were picked
  • 5 (15.15%) - Never played in the NBA
  • 7 (21.21%) - Rank worse in career WS than where they were picked (-181)
  • 18 (54.54%) - Rank better in career WS than where they were picked (+258)

When I did the same breakdown for Bower in the other thread, he came out +22 (118-96) over 15 picks. So on average, his picks were 1.5 "spots" better than where they were picked. For Dumars, he's +77 over 33 picks, meaning his picks were 2.3 "spots" better than where they were picks.

However, instead of overall, let's do the busts vs. the bangs. Bower had 8 players who were better than their draft position for a +118, that's an average of 14.75 position improvement for the good ones. Bower also had 4 players who were worse than their draft position for a -96, that's an average of -24 position decrease for the busts. Let's compare this to Dumars. Dumars had 18 players who were better than their draft position for a +258, that's an average of 14.33 position improvement for the good ones. Dumars also had 7 players who were worse than their draft position for a -181, that's an average of -25.9 position decrease for the busts.

What can we draw from this made up data? Possibly nothing. Or, maybe the draft in general is as hit or miss as they say. You're bound to have second rounders out perform lottery picks, and you're likely to have Milicic's and Morrison's who are utter bombs. What say you hive mind?
