The Detroit Pistons have been active this free agency, adding 5 players through free agency, bringing the list of contracted players up to 18 (league max is 15), thus meaning that some players will be let go. Peyton Siva and Josh Harrellson appear the two popular choices, with non-guaranteed contracts until July 20 when they become guaranteed. However, they will most probably be waived, leaving 16 players. There are a few players who could be in contention for the not-playing-for-Detroit-ever-again award, but what is Stan the Man's master plan, and what does it mean for the roster.
Jennings, Bynum, Dinwiddie, Siva and now Augustin. 5 point guards on a likely 3-PG rotation. Lets assume that Siva is cut, and Dinwiddie doesn't play at all this season. Lets also assume Jennings starts. Now the question remains, Augustin or Bynum? Lets back out for a moment. Assuming Rodney Stuckey is not brought back, Bynum is the longest-serving Piston on the current roster. Sad, isn't it. However, his 6-year spell may soon be up, as he is likely part of any trade package with Greg Monroe, as he is an expiring contract in 2014-15. Also, Augustin was just signed, so he's obviously not going anywhere, leaving Bynum as the likeliest guard to leave Motown this summer.
Detroit's biggest strength and yet its biggest weakness was the frontcourt's inability to shoot. This has been dealt with to a certain extent with the additions of Caron Butler and Cartier Martin, but more reworking is needed. I've said countless times my views on Monroe as 6th man, but I realise that may be unrealistic, and add to that Smith's albatross of a contract, and the
obvious most likely move is Monroe in a sign and trade. In my article yesterday I listed some possibilities, with the best one to Portland for Batum. However, that now looks like a bad move on both sides, with the Pistons adding Butler, plus already having Singler, Datome and Martin, and Portland now boasting a big rotation of Lamarcus Aldridge, Robin Lopez and newly-signed Chris Kaman. Therefore, a new partner is needed, likely a team who needs a true center and who can offer a defensive wing who can space the floor, or a floor-stretching big man.
The moves made already make Siva and Harrellson's roster spots look very shaky, plus in any potential sign and trade we would need to take back less players in order to make the roster work. My likeliest scenario involves a sign and trade for Monroe, along with Will Bynum, to a team who can supply the needs listed above. I can't think of a team off the top of my head (comment below if you can), but this would be my bet for likeliest move made next. However, I feel it's pretty obvious that there is another move coming.
