The most logical explanation?

I would love to hear something more sensible than this. This is just a thought, but things seem to be trending that way.

1) SVG rebuffs Sacramento's overtures on Josh " the human three point miss" Smith supposedly because he's looking for value in return.

2) SVG isn't sure if Monroe would sign long term even with a max contract.

3) SVG knows Monroe is gone next year and will sign the qualifying offer this year so he wants to keep Smith around for 2015-2016 and 2016-2017. ( As if we couldn't find a four or stretch four in free agency or the draft next year?)

I hope none of this is true and and we sign Monroe long term. However, this late in free agency and with lack of teams with significant cap space, what's stopping Monroe and his reps from signing the 5 year $60 million that has "supposedly" been thrown out by the Pistons. Is it posturing on Monroe's part hoping by waiting he can get the Pistons to blink and go up to $14 million a year?

I'd like to hear from people in the know who are probably reading this better than I am and are seeing the long term play here.
