Observations from the open practice

Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports

Just got back from the open practice, nice to see Brandon taking part in the layup drill and shooting very well. The practice consisted of a game like experience with ref's, dancers and t-shirts being thrown to the crowd. The teams were a mish mash of starters and backups with players switching teams depending on who needed what position filled.

Players missing were Baynes, Blake, and Granger.

What really stood out was how good Stanley is. He is smart athletic and can shoot. I am really excited to see him play in the regular season. Lot of nice drives and good feel around the basket. He tried posting up his man (Morris) a couple of times, but was not successful doing it. His low shot got blocked twice.

KCP looked good on his drives, under control and patient. His shot was on too. Him and Jodie were really going at it. His defense was excellent. Jodie shot the ball well also.

Reggie looked good, he can really handle the ball. I watched him shooting in practice and was not impressed, he seems to shoot with both hands. But once the game started he was on.

Hilliard has such a smooth stoke and can handle the ball, he played pg the second half. I expect him to make the team. Thomas did not get much action, and when he did, nothing he did stood out.

Ilyasova went down hard from a pick by Bachynski, he landed on his hip and stayed down a couple of minutes then left for the day.

Spencer had some nice moments, but also made some rookie mistakes. He looked better than he did in summer league. He can get to the paint but looked to pass to much once he got there.

Dre posted up 3-4 times in the first quarter, he looked comfortable but only made one shot.

Morris looked tall, Stanley had problems posting him up. Marcus took a couple of bad shots, but overall was ok.

Bullock and Martin played a lot. Neither was real impressive, Cartier looked like a vet and in control. Bullock moved well out there and I would rather he make the team.

I can't emphasize enough how well Stanley looks out there, he is the real deal.
