We have to go for an NBA championship this year

I know we've heard how much this team is in rebuilding mode, that Drummond is one or two years away from being the great allstar player, that Reggie Jackson isn't expected to hit his threes, that we will eventually need to upgrades on the bench and PF.

But after watching this ferocious start I think we have to revise our thinking. Back to back against Golden State we gave them all they could handle and probably would have beaten them if Andre Drummond was rested and Reggie didn't have to leave the game on a thigh bruise.

There's something to be said for rebuilding but rebuilding is not an end of itself and you can lose sight of the forest for the trees. This team is good right now. It might not be good next year! Why? Hard to say exactly why one team meshes and suddenly becomes amazing. Just the same it is hard to tell when a team loses a step. But you can see when a team is ready and when it's ready you have to seize the day.

The best example of this is the 2008-2009 Orland Magic team. This team went to the finals only to lose to the Lakers. The Magic haven't been back to the finals since and may not for a long time.

That team had Dwight, Rashard, Hedo, Courtney Lee, and Jameer Nelson against the laker's Derek Fisher, Kobe, Gasol, Odom and Ariza. Derek Fisher was one of the worst point guards in the NBA, and this was the year the Magic had. There would be no next year for the Magic. There were a lot of small things that could have been done that year, small changes in the roster, in the bench in the coaching. I'm sure of course the Magic felt they would have next year to do it. that's not how it works in the NBA.

Another example is the 2001 76ers led by the notoriously uncoachable Allen Iverson. That was the 76ers chance. They would not be in the finals again and today they are blown up a joke of a team whose only strategy is more draft picks and no light at the end of the tunnel.

Another example and this one is more painful is the 2004-2005 Detroit Pistons. That team could have won back to back NBA championships, but the team was aging out and this would be their last shot. Did the team know? Did Joe D know? Did Joe just give up? What could we have done if we had been able to upgrade Lindsey Hunter at backup point guard? I love Lindsey but we would have done better.

The window closes quickly you just don't age out, there is magic in the air when a team becomes great and it doesn't always last. 1986 rockets, 1993 suns, 1996 supersonics, 1979 washington bullets, 1974 milwaukee bucks,1967 san francisco warriors, the past is littered with teams that wasted their shot.

We have to go for it this year. Championship or bust!
